Santa Anita for Monday 17 Jan 2011

What a difference a day makes. After yesterday's wonderful card I found today's much more difficult. But then again, I only have the morning line favorite picked as the top selection one time. For you win bettors it may only take 2 or even 1 win to make it a profitable day.
Â
race 1Â Â Â average clarity
5 Worth Repeating  1 1/8 distance seems like a good fit....solid here if fit and ready enough off of the 2+ month layoff
1 Juniper Pass  another who should appreciate the distance.....Bell barn is awakening including a victory with our top pick in yesterday's 9th....responds to ample time between races and gets it
2 Universal Peace  consistent closer switches to the meets leading rider.....trainer could use a winner
Â
race 2Â Â Â average clarity
2 Oilisblackgold  sure seems to appreciate conventional dirt...should sit close up in what looks like a reasonable pace
4 Pode Ir  training great on real dirt.....very likely to show a vast improvement today in 2nd USA start....good races on the dirt in BrazilÂ
5 Setsuko  last was the sprint tune-up to be full throttle 1st at a route in 2nd run after the layoff
Â
race 3Â Â average clarity
5 Warren's Sally  bad trip in mc debut hides a decent effort....smooth things out in 2nd lifetime run and she should compete for the top prize...good drills since his race
6 Irenes Jackpot  another with a bad trip in mc debut.....trainer is decent with 2nd time starts
8 Officerwasispeedin  owns some speed in a race that lacks it.....nice wake up with the blinkers off in last his 1st on the new SA surface
3 Exponential  showed life in mc debut 3 weeks ago and has put in 2 useful 5F drills since....fits if moves forward some
Â
race 4   average clarity Â
4 Stevie's Afleet  lone turf race fig wise fits fine and that was in a sprint....seems better going long.....Palma claimed for 8K and has successfully stepped this mare up the claiming ladder
7 Beautiful American  tiger on the front end when able to get loose on the lead....would have been top choice if it wasn't for the grass course not yielding too many wire to wire winners since it was moved to the 0 ft position
3 Americas Dreaming  overdo drop to earn her keep....needs to avoid hanging tendency
5 Granite Girl   dangerous sort invading from GB....being placed in claiming may be an indication trainer means business 1st in the good old U S of A...could have used non claiming event for a tune-upÂ
Â
race 5Â Â Â average clarity
2 Los Bomberos  1st timer is training as if ready to roll 1st time out for Sadler who is also the Breeder of this youngster
4 Preferred Mandate  flashed some speed in debut and that should come in handy at the speed friendly distance of 5 1/2 F....Bonde is strong with 2nd time starters
5 Jack Reacher  so so debut but the drills continue to suggest he is a runner....good trainer with 2nd timers as well
9 Answer to Abbey   training well enough for his debut into the world of horse racing to be considered a possible factor in this affair
Â
race 6Â Â Â slightly below average clarity
4 Fantando  ships in from Tup off of a 1st ever turf run that looks as if it fits at this level...new trainer on the S Cal seen has being doing fairly wellÂ
3 Lucky Fitz  in lone turf race where he clipped heels badly I wrote in my notes that he would have competed for the win if he hadn't run into trouble...in good form for 2nd lifetime grass run
1 No Stadium  consistent two turn horse on any surface gives the hill course a try for the ever dangerous Gaines barn
2 B's Lucky Strike  horrid trip in last hides a nice move forward 1st out after the claim for Periban...proven turf runner's 1st endeavor down the hill
Â
race 7Â Â Â average clarity
2 Classic Legacy  3 solid races without blinkers...clunker in last with them on...off today and the white hot Baffert trains
7 Arcadian  crushed foes in both lifetime starts at Tup......and then more importantly worked 1:10:2 at Tup...heck that would be outstanding even on the worlds fastest track here at SA
1 Industry Leader  race 2 back his last in a sprint fits fine....sharp recent 5F work is reassuring that the new SA surface is to his liking
Â
race 8Â Â Â slightly below average clarity
3 Unusual Suspect  simply put...his last 2 races are very strong and if he is up to reproducing those efforts off the layoff then he is the one to beatÂ
6 Bourbon Bay  hard to argue for 4 for 4 in the win column at SA...trainer could use a win..it's been awhile
10 Sebastian Flyte  difficult post put carrying 4 lbs less today and is training great...also gets Gomez (note morning line fave is tossed out of top 4 because of an even tougher post and high weight.....but....lookout if there are a couple of scratches and he doesn't start from such a wide draw
5 Marlang  likely loose and if allowed to slow in down will be tough down the lane
Â
race 9Â Â Â average clarity
8 Silver Sparkle  training unbelievably well for a cheap claimer out of nowhere...blinkers off and / or the new surface may be the reason...bombs away if he runs to his works
9 Syllabus  all 3 races are very solid for today's level....bit puzzling why the barn drops..hmmmmmmm...claim me please or crush the field ???
11 Tommy And Buster  invader flashed solid speed in his long layoff run....should be tighter and last much longer on or near the lead from the get go
