Santa Anita for Saturday 9 April 2011

Santa Anita Derby Day!

Santa Anita lucked out with all the bombs that won yesterday making  for a couple of carry-overs on their big day

race 1   slightly above avg clarity

6  Job Boss   hidden forward move (albeit on the dirt) wide close to solid pace....just claimed by a good 1st out after the claim conditioner...can run on the turf

5  El Merito   laid up but hot drills from a hot trainer who is in win mode

4  Joe Carl   seems to be rebounding and lone career grass race fits

2  Tiz West   keeps dropping and under-performing......may finally be low enough if this horse doesn't diminish any more

race 2   slightly above avg clarity

6  Flightofalifetime   very big debut running 2nd to one of the best MSW performances in years turned in by the winner...bullet drill since to boot

3  Dr Ballenger   1st timer of Asmussen's is training like he is ready to roll in his MSW debut

1  Patriot's Voyage   Baff 1st timer is also working up to snuff to be considered ready for his debut into the world of racing

race 3   slightly above avg clarity

3  Unzip Me   very special turf sprinter especially down the SA hill...has handle 124 lbs twice and 125 lbs once and won so 127 seems manageable

2  Tanda   laid up but training sharply.....well proven on the SA hill....and beat Switch last Spring on the AW and then ran 3rd in a bad trip Grade 1 at Bel

7  La Nez   1 for 1 on the hill...consistent sprinter will need lifetime best and some pace up front

8  Separate Forest   on the improve with every start and will need the trend to continue

race 4   average clarity

1A  Seven Secrets   back down to the bottom for this claimer where once again he fits as he did 3 races back with a win

2  Lemon    broke 2 slow and ran 3 wide in last and only got beat by 2....on the improve and a recent bullet drill suggest the trend continues

8  Beyond Loaded   solid win in latest and a repeat of that effort fits as well as anyone in here

4  Don Elias M.   hard trying consistent sort runs best taken back off it...believe has a shot at the circle of joy if the trainer/rider think so as well

race 5    average clarity

1  Bellingham   laid up 5 year old maiden is working as if all systems are go for the ever dangerous Sadler/Rosario combo....lone lifetime race which was on the sod was fine

9  Gifted Crusader   vanned off in MSW debut but that was 10 months ago...training super had bred for the turf

5  My Top Cat   3 wins and 1 2nd in only 7 starts for Heap....brilliant works and Heap used to be the assistant to a trainer who thrived in sprint grass races

4  Craigmont   good consistency on any surface...needs to stop hanging in the stretch

race 6    average clarity

4  Off The Wall   talk about catching tough fields in his 1st 4 races...not so tough in last and won quite easily...likes 4 or 5 weeks between races and gets it

1  Position A    just snatched up by O'Neill at the claiming box...good chance to get a good stalking to mid pack position behind a fast pace that should collapse some

2  Nikki'sgoldensteed   should set up nicely for this closer and appears to be the only true closer in the field

8  Blake   plenty to prove off of the long layoff but did win high priced maiden claiming debut easily

race 7    slightly above avg clarity

1  Caracortado  has developed into a very nice Graded Stakes runner...needs to sit closer then normal because there is a lack of speed in this affair

6  Jeranimo   exactly the same as above

5  Liberian Freighter   inferior horse to most of the horses in the field but lone speed and an animal very capable of rating kindly

race 8    average clarity

5  First Dude   dueled in nasty pace for a race run at 1 1/4 and only got beat by 6 in Grade 1...amazing he is still eligible for a nw alw....drops as a much needed confidence builder

8  Kelvar Kid   last effort sure fits fig wise....needs to duplicate the effort in 1st ever 2 turn run on the main track

2  Royal F J   owns some significant turf and conventional dirt efforts/figs but..........what a hanger.....hard to believe Rosario hasn't ridden sine he got the lone win for this hanger and he won by 3 lengths going away...I've said it before...Rosario gets hangers to win more than any rider I have ever seen

1  Raushenburg   very consistent sort...but...this is his 1st ever on "real" dirt

race 9    average clarity

7  Cambina   solid late running grass horse is 2 for 2 with Gomez up

3  Wave Of Applause  dangerous speed grass filly gets M Smith who is quite good at holding grass routers together

1  Bonita Star   impressive win in last her 1st ever in the good old U S of A.....impressive bullet grass drill since....believe a forward move is imminent

5  Whisper Louise   not sure how ready this Euro laid up invader is but very dangerous if she is ready

race 10   average clarity

3  Mr. Commons   very solid 134:4 winning nw in last...work tab since suggests he is peaking at the right time...and we know what Shirreffs/Smith can do

9  Anthony's Cross  big move forward with the blinkers on in last.......chased a strong pace at today's 1 1/8 mile distance and still was able to hold together and win...also training sharply

6  Midnight Interlude   on the improve with every start and just popped a 1:10:3 just 5 days ago....well bred to appreciate the added distance

4  Silver Medallion   strong runner on the turf and the AW but this is his 1st ever on conventional dirt....so that ? mark pushes him down to our 4th choice

race 11    average clarity

10  One Bad Texter   very good drills for a filly starting her career at the mc30K level...ready

13  Hey Maria   logical drop after 4 races at the MSW level

9  Black Wildcat   another 1st timer training sharply for her debut into the world of thoroughbred racing

14  Lily Amore  toss out last run on a very sloppy track....race 2 back 1st out after the claim fits for today's level

2  Silver Luna   6 furlongs seems to suite this filly who is running 1st out after the claim for Knapp who is having a decent meet
