Cal Cup Day

Good luck as always!

race 1    slightly below average clarity

8  Mum's Truckee   very impressive MSW debut at 1 1/16 on the sod at GG........R Baze rode and stays up again today.........one of the trainer's top stats is his strong % when he ships......drills since her MSW breaking effort remain strong

1  Toomanytomatoes    done little wrong in four lifetime starts......1 for 1 on the grass.......sharp recent drill......1st at a route but likely to handle the added distance.....only negative I can see is that her rider is cold......but he gets a good post to start from

9  Stormin Cee's   has become a much improved filly since switching to route racing.......handled the step up in class in latest and seems capable of stepping up successfully once again this afternoon.......decent opportunity to get a nice stalking position......a position that has led to 2 straight wins

2  Roses For Joni    somewhat short on figs but seems likely to get loose and loose with Mr. Bejarano at the controls

race 2    slightly below average clarity

9  Little Jack    displayed  very significant early pace in MSW debut......the kind of heat that would do most in and yet this 2 year old only lost by 2 1/2 lengths.......should be tough from the get go

2  Back To Bako  good MSW debut (did benefit from the aforementioned hot pace) and two reassuring drills since........trainer has been firing on all cylinders of late

3  He's Not Too Shabby   decent mc debut 2nd in an affair run in mid July......off since but the works are improved and improved on conventional dirt surfaces at Fpx and SA.......Mullins smartly steps him up to MSW racing.......seems very likely to move forward today

7  Gallant Charm   useful MSW debut and now we get a major jock upgrade from a low % apprentice to Mr. Gomez......especially significant on a two year old

race 3    average clarity

6  Cat Meeting    blocked badly two races back and still won for fun on the AW....and then popped lifetime best on the grass at today's 1 mile distance......stout grass trainer and Bejarano sticks around.....that'll do

4  Alley Hondro   wanted no part of  1 1/4 on the grass........much more formidable at shorter turf route distances.........race lacks speed and he owns some and a good starting post......should be on or near the front and able to save some ground.......fits well if he can handle the stress of only 6 days rest

2  Tribal Desert   fits here decently if he brings his somewhat difficult to predict "A game"......the strong recent works sure suggests he is sitting on one of his competitive efforts

3  Our Boy Benjamin   steadily improved until having to be put on the shelf in early 2012........been off since but should be very dangerous if he returns fit and ready and with a rider upgrade

race 4    average clarity

6  Boller Bomb   three very strong efforts/figs for today's level......toss out last.......back in short rest....should rebound today with 5  weeks off to recovery

5  Tiz A Kiss   Sadler first timer sure is working as if he is meant and ready for of MSW debut......and......most of the sharp outfits like Sadler's point a baby or two for this big day for California breds

8  Sophie's Secret   fell off in last but this Sadler runner ran a solid effort/fit two back in her MSW debut.......likely to rebound to it or Bejarano and his agent wouldn't have stayed with this filly for a 3rd straight race

1  Hot And Pleasing   35 to 1 in her MSW debut strongly suggests that Cassidy didn't have this filly fully cranked up and yet she ran a decent 4th......forward move likely this afternoon in 2nd lifetime endeavor

Long-shot possibilities:   10  Big Variety  last sure looked like nothing more than a public work-out...... and....... the trainer has won 4 of his last 11 with 2nd time starters with a solid return for your money.....might go off 50 to 1

race 5    slightly above average clarity

3  The Humancomplaint   good forward move in 2nd lifetime race.......pedigree seems decent to get a route of ground.........Bejarano stays up for a 3rd straight time......and Cecil has a good history 1st time running a horse long....plenty to like

2  Strong Winds   seemingly owns the best early speed in this field......Talamo will most likely try to get loose and lonely on the front end and if he does get loose in reasonable pace he might...........go............all..........the..........way

4  Monument   done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts and I sure like the fact he showed he can handle two turns albeit in a 7 furlong sprint at Fpx....back to M Garcia who is 2 for 2 on this youngster

6  Ballard Ruler   will need best ever most likely.....but bred to handle the distance and now we get a jock upgrade to why did you leave us Joe Rosario

race 6    average clarity

3  Teddy's Promise   well proven fresh off the bench like today and the works hint the trend will continue today.......not the best grass record but prefers the blinkers off and the last grass race with blinkers off is fine

8  Logical Smile   should get a nice position close up in a race that doesn't have much speed especially for a Stakes grass affair down the hill.........trainer is often at his best 3rd start after a layoff and that is today's scenario

1  Tiz Flirtatious   3 for 3 sprinting on main track surfaces.........1st on the grass but bred just fine to handle it.........Rosario sticks with the laid up filly suggesting she is ready to roll fresh

11  Unusual Hottie    fires every time on the grass......1st on the hill but she won her only 6 1/2 sprint race which was run on the AW at Hollywood and won it by a wide margin

Long-shot possibilities:   5  Sizzling Gold  suicidal duel in last her 1st ever down the hill....... and he did well to only lose by 4 horse lengths.......might get loose today and if his jock can slow things down she might be very dangerous

race 7    average clarity

9  Derby Gold   only two races on the SA dirt are very strong including a very bad trip in his MSW debut.....and the work tab is powerful and powerful for a reliable trainer in Bob Baffert who is red hot

8  Shudacudawudya   hard to argue with his stellar record at 6F (12 7 4 1)....and like our top selections he is training exceptionally well for today's big race

7  Ain't No Other   another highly consistent sort who seems at his very best at today's six furlong distance.......and 1st time Bejarano is a dangerous thing

2  Bench Points   seems best on conventional dirt.....1st time blinkers......Yakteen has won 3 of his last 10 when he puts the blinkers on for the first time

Long-shot possibilities:   5  Obsess    much better animal on "real dirt"........and the hot riding Talamo and his agent want the mount......rather sure this gelding will be competitive and competitive at a price

race 8    slightly above average clarity

5  Sparkling Style   filly showed she can handle the grass in last in a route.....back to a sprint where she is formidable when she is at her best which Baffert will most likely have her on Cal Cup Day

1  Bella Viaggia   improving with every start and now switches to the grass for the 1st time which she is well bred to handle and worked solidly with the dogs up on it......and Puype is waking up out of the doldrums

10  Sugarinthemorning   has been running well versus better on the main track.......but......I am not sure she is as good on the grass......the one to beat if she is

6  West Ruler   not what she used to be but it is still difficult to ignore her 2 wins and 2 2nd's in four races down the majestic SA hill turf course

race 9    average clarity

5  Lucky Primo   love when a lead type only learns to rate as this consistent six year old has......and we get 6 lbs off.....trainer Litt does extremely well with limited starters

1  Holladay Road   very good history when placed in Cal-bred Stakes races.......seems to be enough early heat in this affair to flatter his late kick

3  Rousing Sermon   much needed confidence builder here as this Cal bred has mostly been trying to handle Grade 1 and Grade 2 runners........easier here for sure.....should be flying late

7  John Scott   consistent sort still has something to prove running long as he has been involved in 2 straight soft pace affairs in a row and was a little flat late in both......still he sure has done nothing but compete in all 8 lifetime starts

race 10    slightly below average clarity

4  Bert's Altercation   not much in last but MSW debut 2 back was quite good......trainer has been cold but M Jones seldom stays cold for long........seemingly owns the best route breeding in this affair.........think we will see her effort in her MSW debut

7  Sacred Delight   good move forward in 2nd lifetime race.....and has a good route pedigree for a Cal-bred....also Gomez is a big plus helping a two year old youngster get a route of ground

5  Akiss Forarose   improving sort doesn't have the best of route pedigrees but she did run decently in a two turn race albeit in a sprint at Fpx

9  Tilde    easily best sprint credentials but she by a sire not exactly known to toss route runners......but Bejarano sticks with the filly for the 5th straight time.......a dangerous proposition

10  Graduater   good move forward in 2nd lifetime start and will need another one today.....ran as if she will appreciate a route of ground

3  Cotton's Point   might try and steal the race on the front end
