Santa Anita for Thursday 18 October 2012

[private]

Decent card to start the new week of racing at Santa Anita

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Distort This   sure seems loose here and he is capable of rating kindly.......that is a deadly combination especially for a horse training up to snuff in the morning

6  Trucial State   last two grass efforts are solid for this level......draws the meetings leading rider in Joe Talamo.......should by flying late

2  Buffalo Billy   consistent off pace turf runner is a touch compromised like our 2nd choice by a lack of pace but at least the both of them won't have to cope with much traffic with this being a field only 6

race 2    below average clarity

2  Excessive Assault   tepid top choice might sit in a nice stalk position behind a lively pace that seems likely here as the 3 and the 4 can fly and both seem to need the front end to win

3  Motown Men   been off since Jan. but has run well fresh in the past.........and returns as a 1st time gelding and is training well.........some potential for lifetime best after being gelded.....good team of Eurton/Bejrano

5  Affrettando    lone deep closer and a great jock with late runners......connections will have their fingers crossed that a predictably strong pace comes to fruition

race 3    slightly below average clarity

6  Pick Six Joe   very bad trip in latest somewhat hides a significant wake-up......new rider today will attempt to get a smoother journey 1st time at a route........ and if that occurs it might be graduation day

8  Jones Destiny   might be poised for a breakthrough after two decent efforts as this if the 1st time this horse will run off of short rest.....1st at a route but owns adequate pedigree to handle one.......good sign that Gomez sticks around as well

5  There Goes Donnie   not all that impressive so far but just popped his best drill to date hinting something has changed for the better.......we shall see

7  Kentucky Kid   3 turn route at Fpx was a bit much......one less turn (and 1/16 of a mile less) look like a good thing for this youngster

race 4    average clarity

4  Hyena   2 for 2 in claiming affairs.........and drops into one once again for Peter Miller who is not afraid to lose a horse at the claiming box........also this filly should welcome a return to one turn sprint racing and/or 1 furlong less

1  Divas and Diamonds   owns solid early speed in this affair......gets 6 lbs off......gets a tough speed rider.....and the track has been kind to ES so far

3  Cat'sdoubledaygirl   done little wrong in 2 lifetime races on two different conventional dirt surfaces.....trainer Vann Belvoir has been a touch cold but he has an opportunity to jump start his meeting at SA here

6  Gloryandprayer     two solid runs in two lifetime races in early summer on the AW at Hollywood........not the best of layoff trainers but since he was able to get this filly to fire a good race in her maiden debut we will mostly ignore his weak history with horses coming off of layoffs of more than  3 months

race 5    slightly above average clarity

4  Doubledeesonthetee   broke a little slow versus better and then showed some life.....off for two months but training up to snuff and drops 50K in maiden claiming price.......first on conventional dirt but is bred OK for it........can sit close up if breaks cleanly this afternoon....good gate rider up

7  Havoc   very strong work regiment for this 1st timer especially considering the level of racing.....rather sure this baby of Mike Mitchell's is ready to roll at 1st asking

1  Crazy Lorenzo   probably disliked a route in last his 2nd lifetime start.......toss it out.........had more than a dozen lengths of trouble in debut and got beat by 10 1/2......seems dangerous and at a price today

6  Primed and Ready   1 turn 6F seems like a good fit......trainer is coming off of a solid week

race 6    average clarity

8  Striking Spirit   consistent sort since the blinkers were put on 7 races ago...... and he seems especially solid at the somewhat specialty distance of 7F ....2 for 2.......another plus is his (3 2 1 0) record on conventional dirt.....trainer has been firing on all cylinders

1  Classy Lion   Knapp smartly steps this gelding up following a solid wake up both in pace and final time in his latest........and the recent decent drills since are very reassuring........4 lbs off today as well

5  Back At You   capable of clearing the field here and with 1st time Bejarano......also can win from off of it if need be

9  Gold Medallion     solid early move in route at Fpx in last........should be in better shape endurance wise for a cut back in distance to a 7F sprint

race 7    average clarity

4  Always a Chance   very solid in latest almost winning at today's level despite sitting awfully close to a sizzling pace......excellent works since........retains top gun Talamo......draws a good post for a mile on the sod.........all systems go

6  Suances Vixen   best race for this 3 year old is her only race at today's 1 mile turf distance......and now she gets Bejarano on her back for the 1st time.......such a deal

1  Briteyednbushytail    continues to improve one baby step at a time.........and has a good history when Gomez is the rider (4 1 2 1)

5  Twitch   claimed by Cassidy in late Aug and off since......only so so in 2012 but if her new conditioner can get her to bounce back to her 2011 form........lookout

Long-shot possibilities:    10  Toluca   only grass race for this filly was much better than appears in print......she had a bad trip and a bad trip versus better.......Mullins has had a terrific 2012 with his grass cutters

race 8    slightly above average clarity

8  Disarm    lifetime best was lone race on conventional dirt in an affair run at LS......training exceptionally well on the SA dirt and drops......and Sadler has won 9 of his last 27 2nd outs after a claim which is today's scenario

1  Greeley Awesome   trainer could use a win or two so they drop this colt from MSW to mc30K........colt was blocked badly in the stretch in a distance grass race in latest........ suggesting that there should be plenty left in the tank for today........1st on conventional dirt but bred fine to handle it

3  Beau Diablo   decent maiden debut getting blocked some in the stretch or might have graduated.........top two picks have a lot of potential but so does this runner if he got a lot out of his 1st racing experience

4  Mine Fever   blinkers off today seems like a sharp move by Peter Miller.....works are better.....and the last time this colt had the blinkers off he ran his lifetime best

6  Quite Domestic

9  Salah Champ
