Santa Anita for Wednesday 26 December 2012

[private]

Opening day at the Santa Anita winter/spring meeting never seems to get old. Maybe it is because of the week break.

Sure hope the rain stays away and the racetrack plays fair.

No racing tomorrow.  Five consecutive days of racing after the off day. Sure hope we get off to a good start if not today at least for the week.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

7  Sir Bond   consistent Asmussen runner had a powerful layoff sprint run in latest......plenty of rest to recovery from such a stressful effort.........crushed foes last time saw a two turn race.....one mile two turn affair here

3  Tribal Jewel   just keeps getting better.......and better......and better.......and better.........and..........blinkers on and the recent drills sure have been sharp

4  Dramedy   broke his MSW at 1st asking in a 1 turn mile at Aqu......never an easy accomplishment........shows up in the Jeff Mullins barn.........dangerous sort if he is ready off of the 7 week layoff

9  Macho Dorado

race 2    average clarity

(if off the turf  2-10-11-12-7   slightly below average clarity)

2  Drift King   toss out last as he was blocked about 6 or 7 lengths in the stretch.........only race down the majestic SA hill grass course was solid....should get a nice stalking trip

6  Cherokee Heaven   old timer still is quite dangerous when he is feeling good as he showed in his last at one notch higher........away for 2 months but has trained steadily since........fits well if he repeats his latest

12  Mr. Bossy Pants   consistent sort who makes the most of his limited starts loves the SA hill (4 for 7 in the win column).........tough post but gets the services of Hollywood's leading rider in Maldonado

10  Smoken Legacy

race 3    average clarity

5  Sky Fox   very solid efforts/figs at SA....laid up since Feb. but is working as if all systems are go for for his return to the race wars

1  Southern Heat   fell way off in last but his debut on the grass at Hol was very strong considering today's significantly lower level.......1st on the main track but bred to handle it.........drop is somewhat alarming but Eric Guillot has had decent success with similar the last few years

12  Goodbye Charlie   continues to train as if he greatly appreciates the SA dirt surface.......gets awfully brave when he gets a loose lead and he has a shot to get it here

3  Time To Doubledown

race 4    slightly above average clarity

5  My Miss Aurelia     three year old filly rattled off 6 consecutive wins to start her career and then ran a solid 2nd in the B C Ladies Classic at SA...........works say she has remained sharp............that'll do

3  Reneesgotzip   very impressive races in 8 of 9 lifetime starts especially when Garrett Gomez has been on her back ............and that is the case this afternoon

7  Book Review   seems at very best at today's 7F distance (3 for4).........1st time under the guidance of Bob Baffert and she just worked a very solid 5/8ths drill..........very dangerous sort

1  Mamma Kimbo

race 5    slightly below average clarity

(if off the turf  1-5-7-6-8   below average clarity)

1  Fit To Rule    blocked badly in the stretch 2 races back or would have won.......powerful 9 length win in latest.......1st on the sod but decently bred to handle it........stout here from the get go if he does handle his 1st ever on the green carpet

3  Smart Ellis   horrid trip in last......toss it out.....solid 3rd two back at today's Grade 2 level.......shot to sit in a much closer early position today.......and......that looks like a plus in a field lacking early speed types

7  Battle Force   consistent late runner will be hoping for more speed up front than anticipated........should come flying late if he gets it

5  Midnight Crooner

race 6    average clarity

3  Aleander   Baffert 1st timer hasn't missed a beat in the morning for the last 3 months.....that strongly suggests he is very meant and ready for his MSW debut......Baffert probably gave this 1st timer a little more time because even though mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters she has yet to have a foal win at 2......only 6 days from turning 3

6  Masaru   Asmussen 1ster finished off his work regiment with a 1:11 & change six furlong gate drill.....that suggests he is probably all business with his youngster's debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

12  Belvin   very solid debut for this well bred Baffert charge........impressive works since

7  Forest Boy

Long-shot Possibilities:   9  Radar The Rat   went off at 35 to 1 in MSW debut last......that strongly suggests the race was nothing more than a turf leg him up tune-up......power house drill since......best of 42 bullet drill......not impossible and at a big big price

race 7    average clarity

(if off the turf   5-2-3-8-1  slightly below average clarity)

3  Fabled Haven   both races with the blinkers off on the grass are solid for today's racing level......and they wisely remain off today......same 1 mile distance as today in both those races.......another reassuring plus

7  Winds Of Dubai   steady improvement throughout most of this geldings 10 race career.......1st time Bejarano.........show be motoring late

5  Sarangani   laid up 3 year old is training as if meant and ready fresh off of the bench today.........a little short fig wise but he might get loose and lonely on the lead here with a very reasonable pace

8  Rintoo

race 8    average clarity

5  Politicallycorrect   vastly improved efforts for this Ward runner in his last two endeavors........love the fact Ward shipped back to GP after a winning effort at SA in very early Nov. and now is willing to ship all the way back to Arcadia for this race......a good sign this 3 year old has held his stout form

4  The Lumber Guy   ultra impressive in last 2 Grade 1 races.......and crushed his foes in only race he ever ran at 7F.......retains Rosario......a nice plus

3  Drill    solid when he brings his "A game"........might today because he is 3 for 3 at today's somewhat specialty sprint distance of 7 furlongs

2  Jimmy Creed

Long-shot Possibilities:   9  Guilt Trip    lifetime races say no here.......but.....1st time in the Baffert barn and the workouts are substantially better.....dangerous and at a rare double digit price for any Baffert trainee

race 9    average clarity

8  Scorpion Warrior   significantly better than par in both lifetime races for today's MSW level........off since July of 2011 but the works suggest he is returning ready to roll and draws the services of Rosario

12  Wild Media   impressive MSW debut last and training as if he exited the race in good health......same or better seems likely this afternoon

7  Incline Village   Koriner 1ster is training as if he is meant and ready in his MSW debut showing good speed and endurance in his morning work......trainer was awakening at the end of the Hollywood meeting

4  Delayed

1  Afflication

2  Brannaman
