Santa Anita for Sunday 27 January 2013

[private]

Gave extra selections in some of the races because of the many scratches that are likely to occur again today as they did on Friday's and Saturday's sloppy tracks.

Looking forward to fast and firm with the sunny forecast anticipated for next week.

race 1    average clarity

5  Iconic Spirit   sure appreciated her 1st on conventional dirt in latest.......nice reassuring work since......bred fine to get a route........off going is a question mark as it is for all of the runners in this 6 horse field

1  Temptress   very well bred runner showed little in her lone race at CD back in early November.........but Asmussen is better with 2nd time starters and stout with laid up animals.....and the work regiment hints that this one is ready fresh

4  Black Witch   decent 2nd in 2nd lifetime race and her 1st ever at a route.......would have been top pick if I wasn't so leery about this youngster having to get an extra 1/16 as she looked like an easy winner at one mile and then flattened out and/or hung in the late stretch

race 2    average clarity

6  Lord Vronsky   ultra consistent animal has never missed the board in 8 lifetime sprints at today's distance winning 4 of those 8 races.......Belvoir runner has a good chance to get a nice stalk or mid pack position behind the speed of the 3 and the 5

5  Hidden Blessing   best finish in his latest for this Heap runner in quite some time......might be feeling really good......would have been top pick if it wasn't for his dull effort on an off track 2 back

3  Jack O Lyn    at best in races 6 furlongs or less.......tires badly past 6F......last two races were at 6 1/2F......Glatt has been rather hot of late

race 3    average clarity   (if off the turf  2-1-8-11-4-9)

8  Rob's Pal    decent pedigree for gd/yl turf........Mullins charge has been away since 23 Nov but he needs to be ready as he seems to want 6 to 9 weeks between starts

3  Democrat Duck   closed very well from far back into a soft pace sprinting  on a good turf course at Hollywood in debut 2 back........recent drills hint this Hollendorfer runner has never been sharper

1  Grand Giant   like our 2nd choice this Yakteen runner also handled a good turf (in the same race) two races back......would have been top pick if he hadn't failed badly in his only turf route.....albeit at 1/8th further than today

4  Dark Red

7  Maxx The Giant

Long-shot Possibilities:   12  Sports Report   74 to 1 says MSW debut last was the tightener to drop and go 1st on the grass today......mom has tossed 2 grass winners .......Gary Mandella is hot......and I love the 3 6F drills since his MSW tune-up on the AW

race 4    slightly below average clarity

6  Sassy Brunette   on the right end of the learning curve with few reasons not to believe the trend won't continue if this Art Sherman runner can handle the off going

5  Flaxen Maiden   another who appears to be improving one baby step at a time.....and this filly seems to be easy to handle (intelligent?) as she has had clean trips in all 3 lifetime races on 3 radically different surfaces dirt/AW/turf

1  Glorious Choice    sprint / sprint  tune-ups.......full throttle in 3rd lifetime race in 1st ever at a route ??

2  Warren's Lorie S.

race 5    average clarity

6  Field Report   has been best 2nd out after layoffs and that is the scenario today for this Spawr runner.....good trainer/rider combo.....horse has never failed to hit the board in all 4 "dirt" starts

3  Rock Me Baby   won debut like a good thing.....will need more today and might get it with a race under his belt and the confidence of winning at 1st asking

4  Me Likely Mikey   bit short on figures but Puype is historical good route to sprint and that is what we have here.....and often route to sprint works best in 7F affairs

race 6    average clarity

7  Conspiracy   big race and win turf to dirt last year at the prestigious Saratoga meet......turf to dirt today......blinkers on and a powerful 5/8ths drill.....all systems go for Baffert and company

2  Senor Rain   Indy bred has been 1-2 in 9 of 10 races on conventional dirt including one on an off track.....and he has won 2 of 3 races at Santa Anita

6  Sir Bond   terrific races on "fast tracks".......not as good on "off tracks" failing in both as the favorite although he did manage 2nd at FG in the slop

4  First Strike

race 7    slightly below average clarity

8  Pure Loyalty   poor trips in both lifetime starts hides a horse that can run some......off since late summer but Glatt runners have been firing on all cylinders for the most part..........and the preparatory drills of very impressive

2  Unbridled Giant   20 to 1 for a Baffert 1ster screams the race was needed badly......and the drills since his debut are vastly better than the drills before his debut.....and Baffert is stout historically speaking turf to dirt

10  Secretsatmidnight   multiple trip trouble (at 4 different points of the race) in his MSW debut for this Baffert charge........likely to smooth out the kinks in 2nd lifetime start

6  Treasury Bill

7  Grand Humor

race 8    average clarity

3  Magical Blend   only ran 5L slower (and with stronger pace) than the Stakes race won by Teddy's Promise (on the 29th of Dec on a sloppy track) who won yesterday as our top pick in a Grade 2 on an off track......that'll do

2  Splendidly   big race in career debut two back and it is somewhat hidden by a bad trip.......off since April but proven fresh and is working stoutly for Mr Bob Baffert

6  Twelve    ultra consistent on conventional dirt and versatile in her running style....that is a big plus especially if the drying out track is biased in any manner

1  Egg Drp

race 9    average clarity

5  Prime Issue   seems to be running into shape and now drops a mdn claiming notch for today.....and he showed in can handle seven furlongs in last......chased a hot 2nd quarter and still stuck around at the wire to only lose by 2 1/2L for the win

6  Tribal Money   caught wide near the pace and did well to hang around for 2nd against a runaway winner.......also......7F seems to be well within his reach

1  Got Heem   concerned about this Mitchell runner getting the 7F but if I'm wrong about my concern this gelding should be a big factor in the late stages......Mitchell is starting to heat up a bit as well

3  Majestic Issue

4  Flew Flicker

2  Streamofstream
