Santa Anita for Thursday 14 February 2013

[private]

Not too crazy about today's card but it wouldn't be the first time that what I thought would be a difficult day turned out to be just fine.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Hodge   all 3 lifetime races on the SA dirt when rated "fast" are rather good both pace and final time wise......5 1/2 furlongs appears to be a good fit.......reassuring recent work

2  D J Dave   trainer has always been dangerous when he makes multiple level drops in claiming and he sure seems to be in win mode of late

6  Time To Doubledown   not the best of trips in latest and still came flying late.....the effort/race fits and so does his winning effort 2 races back

race 2    average clarity

2  Lilly's Perfect   consistently fires in route races on the main track........lifetime best was with Gomez and he is back in the irons today for Dean Greenman

3  Folk Dancer   somewhat faint of heart when she gets some pressure on or near the front end.......but she might not get any here

6  Town Belle   trainer has been in a block of ice this meet but might thaw things here with this mare who looks like she is well meant 2nd out after the layoff following a sprint tune-up/gimme

race 3    average clarity

3  Miranda   very unsettled (in her only grass race) in the early stages and then she showed ability on the turf once she settled down........only one race in last 8 months but she is training as if she is fit and ready......good sign that Bejarano is back aboard after not riding her in her latest

6  Bromelia   lifetime best (that would be mighty tough here) was the only time this filly was able to run off of relatively short rest.........31 days then.........34 days today

2  Corinthian Melody   has handled the SA hill just fine and handled it with a much less efficient grass rider than Garrett Gomez.....likely to fire lifetime best with the rider upgrade

1  Scat Patty

race 4    slightly below average clarity

4  Lico   definitely on the right end of the learning curve and now we get a rider upgrade to Gary Stevens......had my doubts that I would be making that statement (over just about any rider including the struggling jocks like Quinonez) when he announced he was making a comeback.......but what an impressive comeback he is making......looks great & he is riding great especially on the turf........hope his aging body can hold together for a long time

1  Wine Stock   SCRATCHED OUT OF RACE

8  Lord Of Ballandrae   keeps working like he is a runner of some merit.......so considering Palma is vastly better with 2nd time starters I would surmise that his route turf MSW debut was the turf tune-up/tightener for a full throttle go today on the dirt today

3  Inflamed Spirit  (tie for 3rd selection)

9  No Contingency   (tie for 3rd selection)

race 5    average clarity

4  Lite That Baby Up   past history on the dirt suggests this Cerin/Bejarano runner will appreciate the extra 1/8 mile on the sod.....meets leading jock knows this gelding well

1  Cloud Hopper   last looks like a nice tune-up placed over his head to drop and go 2nd time as a gelding in today's much more realistic level.......trainer is in go mode of late popping for 4 wins in his last 8 starts

3  Bio Pro   finally gets back to the grass which he handled quite well (faced better) in his 1st two lifetime races without blinkers.......in good form on the main track and this will be the 1st time this competitive fellow gets to run with the blinkers on the grass

8  Ain

race 6    slightly below average clarity

10  Memo to Kathy    woke up in latest and the works since suggest the same or possibly better can be expected this afternoon.......Spawr has been red hot with his claiming stock so far at this meeting

2  Rossi Reserve   very consistent sort long or short on the fast "real dirt" (18 7 3 2 )..........needs to avoid a suicidal duel with the 4 horse

4  Vegas Rules   speed of the speed can be tough here providing she breaks well which she has failed to do about 1/3rd of the time........but Maldodano will be more than ready after getting tossed at the start in latest

9  Michailasheartlite

Long-shot possibilities:   6 Jule's Gold   obvious prep race in last.......should be fit enough today.......last 3 wins came the last three times this filly was loose on the lead.......not impossible to get the lead if the aforementioned 4 horse breaks badly

race 7    average clarity

4  Best Present Ever   loves the SA hill turf course and it really showed 3 races back the last time she ran on it......and today she gets 1st time Bejarano.......likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip with two faster horses and 1 slower horse starting to her inside

6  Minds Eyes   best ever in 4 lifetime races was the only time this Shirreffs filly ran down the SA hill turf course.......off for 2 months but is working exceptionally well for today's race......all systems go fresh off of the bench

1  Plaza de Indias   constantly outruns her odds......cut back from a turf route to 1st time on the hill is quite often a very good thing

2  Magical Blend

race 8    average clarity

6  All About Avery   useful maiden debut but what I really like is the vastly improved 5F work since.......rather sure this one moves forward today in her 2nd lifetime start........Bejarano and his agent must think so as well as they see fit to stick with the filly

3  Medusalina   on the right end of the learning curve with few reasons not to believe the developement can't continue this afternoon

4  Lady Delaney   not much to get excited about when you look at this runner's 6 lifetime races......but.......the trainer might have discovered the trump card for this filly because she sure is training like a different vastly improved individual

8  Didrikson

2  Friends With Macy

9  Tiz Anna
