Santa Anita for Thursday 28 February 2013

[private]

Early bird sign-up for special Triple Crown publications (which will save you pennies shy of $30) is now available for a limited time only.

Sure seems like a decent card to start of the new week of thoroughbred racing at one of the greatest racing venues in the world, Santa Anita.

race 1    slightly above average clarity

1   His Royal Highness    all three lifetime conventional dirt races rated fast fit well in this lower spot.......exits a Mdn50K that was loaded with talent.......3 reassuring works since his last

3  Cold Bay   sure appreciated 1st ever on fast rated dirt in latest.......best final time fig and easily best pace displayed in quite some time.....sharp drill since

4  Gifted Prince   missing in action since his MSW debut which was run in mid Nov. of 2010........training like he is fairly healthy at 5 and draws Bejarano which sure seems significant with this kind of runner

5  I Feel Free

race 2    average clarity

3  Consurgo   Mitchell 1ster sure is training as if he is all wound up and ready for the challenge of a two turn affair in his MSW debut.........drills are tightly spaced and quite strong which suggests this colt is very fit

5  Masaru   2nd time starter exits a fast MSW sprint affair on opening day where he broke slowly and ran wide and did well to only get beat by 7 lengths.....good work series since......bred well to get the two turns

1  Taran Taran   another first time starter with a work regiment that suggests he is ready to roll.......and of course there is the ultra stout team of Baffert/Bejarano in support of the horse

6  Pythen

race 3    slightly above average clarity

4  Ubelongtomemissy    filly has faced significantly better in her last two races which were both at today's distance and on conventional dirt.......repeat of either of those efforts makes her the one to overcome in this spot

3  Cavalletta   proven on the conventional dirt at SA......seems to respond well to ample time between starts and this time gets 8+ weeks........works hint she might fire best ever and she will need to to beat our top pick

6  Royal Tiger   lifetime best on conventional dirt was run 3 races back and it was run back in short rest........even shorter rest today........rider/trainer have hit the board in last 1/2 dozen although without a win

1  Holiday Rose

race 4    average clarity

9  Hidden Blessing   loves the distance of 5 1/2 furlongs (6 3 0 3) ........capable of going eye to eye on the front end of things and still hold together in the stretch.....that is quite rare and a valuable asset

10  Vaundell   on the decline but seems to have found a level that suites him well with whatever ails or bothers him.......last 3 races fit solidly......1st at the abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2F but it should be a good fit with his on or near the front running style

3  Jeffery's Groove   probably fired his best 6F race ever (in his latest) and now gets to run at 5 1/2F which he greatly prefers over all other distances........and he just popped a 3F bullet.......and we get a jock upgrade.......such a (package) deal

1  Warren's Dr. Boo

race 5    average clarity

3  Pocket Prince    solid score for the The Racing Digest in last out at 44 to 1 and he has another shot to upset here 3rd out after the layoff......he has steadily improved over his 12 month career and I see few reasons not to believe that the trend can't continue today

10  Baby Blake   best ever was the last time this Pender charge ran dirt sprint to turf 1 mile route and it was off of short rest........turf sprint in last - 1 mile route today off of 11 days rest.......would have been top pick if he had drawn a better post

7  Sanibel Sid    obvious sprint tune-up in last off of the extended hiatus from the track......full throttle in a turf route today......race 3 back (in early Dec, 2011) was a very strong 2nd versus a very stout winner

1  Sarangani

race 6    average clarity

9  Mel's Game    powerful win in last especially considering it was run off of a long layoff........two reassuring drills since......last will do.......more will be icing on the cake

8  Island Sunset   4 wide trip in last and still managed a fast closing (2nd place beaten 1/2 length for the win) finish.......Cal-bred ran some nice races in Florida including a strong effort at today's somewhat specialty sprint distance of 7F

4  Real Conundrum   very bad trip in his return to the races off of a long layoff......had about 8 lengths of trip trouble and only lost by 2........fits solidly if repeats the effort today and Pedroza makes amends with a good trip

5  Luckarack

race 7    slightly below average clarity

Willyconker   obviously not the same as he was last winter at Santa Anita but his last sure looks like a public work-out as in why would O'Neill step this gelding up when he was disappointing versus lessor......maybe dirty him up a little to run for a tag......and look who's up........Gomez

2  Tribal Tribute    chased too fast of a pace in latest versus better and predictably tired.......smarter ride from Stevens likely today as he sure is riding stellar on the green carpet

8  Temple's Door   1 1/4 seems out of his range.......race 2 back at 1 1/8 fits fine and so might today's 1 mile affair.......Mullins is showing signs of waking up and when he is hot he is especially hot with his grass runners

7  Causeithertz

race 8    average clarity

7  Flew Flicker   way too wide close to the front in last hides a solid forward move to some degree......would have broken his maiden 2 back at today's 7F distance but was disqualified

8  Warren's Tyler S.    checked in the early stages over 1/2 dozen lengths in latest and then showed he can run some......7F should be a good fit as he galloped out strongly at 6F in his eventful last

11  Primed And Ready    his name seems appropriate here as this laid up runner with the blinkers taken off for today sure is training sharply for his return to the race wars

2  Zippingaroundtown

10  Majestic Desert

9  A Thousand Aces
