Santa Anita for Thursday 21 March 2013

[private]

Discounted full card selections for Kentucky Derby day, Preakness Day, and Belmont Day all three of which usually have 13 races has been extended to March 24th. That breaks down to costing approximately $1.60 per race.

Seems like a decent enough card to start the new race week albeit a bit chalky. Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

3  Bikini Bottom   significant better than par move forward in 2nd lifetime race.........2 reassuring drills since......same or better seems somewhat likely today in this runners 3rd lifetime start

7  Rich In Tradition   best two lifetime races were her two "fresh" efforts and one of those efforts, her maiden debut, is somewhat disguised by a bad trip......laid up since August and training like she is ready fresh once again

1  Dulcemia   lifetime best was the only time this filly saw conventional dirt and the race was at SA at today's abbreviated distance of 5 1/2 furlongs.......and it was her maiden debut and the trainer isn't exactly known for his prowess with 1st time starters

6  Proud Bok

race 2    average clarity

2  His Royal Highness   all 4 lifetime conventional dirt races rated "fast" fit fine here.......trainer change from a very low % trainer (at least these days for the Hall of Fame conditioner) to a 20% trainer in 2012-13

1  World Renowned  racing way above his head in his last two........now drops to the lowest level he has ever seen.........rider upgrade and blinkers on.........might be now or never for this well bred horse who cost a bundle at sale

8  Patriotic Lion   lead type only might own enough speed to clear here and get what he needs for any chance.........a loose lead

7  Almost Better

race 3     average clarity

3  Spacecoast   continues to train as if she has held her form which has been good this past winter......her 1st race of the new season is in a 5 1/2F sprint and she crushed her foes by 8 lengths the last time she ran at the short sprint distance which was run 2 races back

6  Peppy Bolly    1st or 2nd in all 4 of her efforts on conventional dirt........broke slightly tardy and ran 3 wide in last and still managed a fast closing 2nd.....2 sharp reassuring 3F works since....likely to fire another good race on the "dirt"

2  Majestic Stinger   1 win and 2 close 2nd's in 3 lifetime sprint races on main track surfaces rated fast........fits fine here if she manages to hold her form for a somewhat low % trainer

4  Sweet Nectar

race 4    average clarity

6  Incredible Journey    seems to be crying out for a longer race and finally gets it today in a race at 1 1/8th restricted to filly 3 year olds......sure like the fact this filly broke her MSW at AP in her debut in a race at a mile on good turf......never easy to get the distance in your maiden debut on good turf in July as a 2 year old

1  Wittgenstein   seems to have a decent opportunity to stalk a suspect leader in the 4 horse.......owns a pedigree that suggests she should be better the further she runs

7  Macha   2 of 4 lifetime efforts/figs fit fine here if she can duplicate those AW races on the turf this afternoon......New York bred filly owns a decent enough pedigree for it.....and she is bred well to handle the 1 1/8th

3  Branding

race 5    average clarity

5  Courageousandbold   plenty of early gas in this race should set things up nicely for this Sadler mid pack runner.....last fits fine and a nice series of 3 works since hints we can get as good an effort today from her

7  Cotton Belle   on the right end of the learning curve and now this Tup shipper shows up in the ever dangerous Mike Mitchell barn.......preparatory drills at the Arizona track look rather solid for today's race

8  Arinyes Love   3 for 7 at today's distance........1 for 14 at other distances......and seemingly a good spot for a closer which this 4 year old filly happens to be

1  Rock U Up

race 6    slightly above average clarity

6  Silent Bidder   best set of preparatory works for a laid up Mac runner in many many a moon............and I love the step up into MSW racing.......colt sure seems to be returning to the race wars as a vastly improved racehorse

5  Lefty O'Doul   best of 3 lifetime efforts all of which were grass races is his lone race down the SA hill turf course......chased a sizzling pace in the hill race and rightfully tired late to be beaten by 1 1/4 after briefly taking the lead......significant jock upgrade for today to the meets leading rider who has won 10 of his last 15 for Hollendorfer......yikes

1  Broker Brett   his niche appears to be turf sprint races and that of course is what we have here.......late running type will have his fingers crossed in hopes of getting a solid pace up front to flatter his late kick

2  Mambo Man

race 7    average clarity

4  Great Warrior    2 for 4 on conventional dirt.........1 for 15 on other surfaces.......solid layoff run in last......very fast heat versus better and he had a wide trip.........did well to only get beat by 6 1/4 lengths

5  American Blend    nice move forward in latest in a 7F affair.......should be ready to handle a route 3rd race off of the layoff......only lifetime route race was very impressive running way too wide after a slightly tardy start and still ran 3rd......better post today and the meets top gun sticks around

6  Half Strike   1 for 1 at SA and the race was run at today's 1 mile distance........off since the win run on 25 Oct 12 but working as if he is ready fresh......will need lifetime best today but Richard Mandella has had a stellar SA meeting

8  Joy Boy

race 8    average clarity

(short field for a super high five race so only 5 picks instead of 6)

4  Coconut Cream Pie   decent fig in maiden debut last and maybe more importantly this filly closed awfully well late into a very soft pace.......smart and reassuring move by Sadler stepping this filly up 20K in maiden claiming

1  Puttybadshark   only needs a logical small move forward in her 2nd lifetime start to be a par runner for today's level of maiden racing.......likely to sit in a nice mid pack ground saving position and ponce in the stretch drive

5  Lucky Student   2nd out after the layoff.......cut back in distance of a furlong......drop out of MSW racing......and a decent pedigree to handle her 1st ever on conventional dirt all add up to a contender in this spot

7  Rockin Cowgirl

6  Tribal Spy
