Santa Anita for Thursday 4 April 2013

[private]

Decent Thursday card (and a carry0ver in the Pick 6) to start Santa Anita Derby week.

race 1    slightly above average clarity

2  Chief Havoc   no shot in last (rather washy in the starting gate too) as he was caught wide pressing a hot pace following a slightly tardy start.......good shot to be on or near the lead in this spot as the controlling speed

5  Sweet Thunder    well prepared for his 1 1/2 year layoff run and 1st ever at a route with a prolonged work regiment featuring multiple 7 & 8 furlong endurance building works that are tightly spaced

1  Rocabar   another laid up runner working as if ready to roll in his return to the race wars

race 2    slightly above average clarity

4  Bas   tossed a clunker in last with 1st time blinkers......blinkers off today and drops out of MSW racing to maiden claiming......usually solid connections could use a few more wins.........might be in drop mode to get those wins

5  Firendesire   hidden improve in last as I doubt this filly wanted little to do with 7F yet she still moved forward a little......seems poised for best ever with the cut back of one furlong for today

6  Julio's Gold   tossed a major league disappointment in her last.......needs a significant rebound this afternoon........fits fine if she manages one

race 3    average clarity

7  My Cinsation   good early speed.........Maldonado..........Bonde...........bullet best of 52 4F drill just 5 days ago..........and 1 for 1 on the SA hill grass course.........very nice mix of positives

3  Hidethegoodstuff   nothing special about the time/fig in MSW win in latest but she came home in a cantor.......that strongly hints she has plenty in the tank for today and will likely move forward

1  Swiss Bliss   very competitive in 6 of last 7 races........1st on the lawn but seemingly has an adequate pedigree for it

4  Always a Chance

race 4    average clarity

1 Spit Ball   3 for 3 (winning all 3 by daylight) since going under the knife (gelded)  and switching to a resurgent Victor Espinoza........step up claiming once again........a good sign he continues to be a happy healthy fellow

2  Joe Carl   terrific history on conventional dirt (8 4 2 2) and he racing at his favorite distance......retains Gomez who like this runner knows how to win from far off of the pace

4  Nextdoorneighbor   trainer is a stellar 6 for 11 at the meeting......gelding just ran a 134:4 dirt mile at Turf Paradise which is awfully fast even on a very fast Tup racing surface on March 3rd

race 5    average clarity

3  Golden Mexico    Sadler charge sure looks loose here and if Joe Talamo is able to set a reasonable pace...... he.................might...............go................all.................way

7  Unusual Jazz   claimed by Miller in last and he puts T C Baze back up who won for fun the last time he rode this horse 3 races back on 11 Jan.......he had the 7 post that day and the rail was 30 feet out as it is today...........hmmmm

2  Midnight Crooner   very sketchy work pattern for this alarming Baffert drop down.......but on the other hand Bob has won with half of his last dozen 1st time in claiming runners.......tough call

5  Porfido

race 6    average clarity

3  Warren's Parolee   toss out last......wanted no part of two turn racing........back to a sprint where his race 2 back is somewhat better than par both pace and final time wise.......and trainer is on fire

6  Unmarked Bills   3 of his last 4 races fit well here.......and like our top selection his conditioner has had a great SA meeting

1  Warren's Wesley   trainer/rider are 3 for their last 5 as a team over their last 8 weeks........and the horse just keeps getting better.........and better........and better.........and............

7  Spetacularjourney

race 7    slightly above average clarity

2  Horizon Sky   very strong 1st in the good old U S of A run in latest and it was down the SA hill turf course.......repeat of the effort with a reasonable trip will make him very tough here

1  Disarm    owns plenty of ability to compete here if of course he can duplicate his dirt prowess in his 1st ever on the sod.........owns a so so pedigree for it

5  Greeley Awesome   there seems to be ample pace in this race to aid the late run of this O'Neill charge who I believe will like a turf sprint as he gets a little flat sometimes in his route grass races

4  Sacred Ovation

race 8    average clarity

6  Great Friends Rule   back where belongs after 2 races where his connections might have been a bit overly ambitious..........abbreviated sprint distance of 5F seems like a good fit

10  Fighting On   owns good early gas and has a stout speed rider in Maldonado up......have to appreciate that in a 5 furlong affair especially on the 2 level drop in maiden claiming

2  Dockweiler   trains like a runner of some merit but sure didn't run like one in his MSW debut........deserves another chance as he continues to train sharply and drops into mdn claiming for his 2nd lifetime start

1  Stormin City

5  Shadow Hall

7  Full Fare
