Santa Anita for Saturday 13 April 2013

[private]

Average card at best today. Sunday at first glance appears to be better. Counting today we have only 6 days of racing left at the Winter/Spring Santa Anita Meeting. Sure went fast.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Airfoil   26 to 1 in a solid sprint MSW debut strongly suggests the race was needed and that more can be expected today 1st at a route......very good pedigree to handle a distance of ground

2  Master Appeal   two powerful sprint efforts in both lifetime starts.......would easily have been top pick if this was another sprint......but it is a route and Cassidy is 1 for his last 50 1st time at a route.......still......mighty tough if this runner produces the same effort running long

6  Smokin' Bernie   Bob Baffert 1st timer is working up to snuff to be dangerous in his MSW debut......what's new?

7  Del Mar Sunset

race 2    slightly above average clarity

7  Vibrato Jazz   1 for 19 lifetime so Sadler drops into claiming to capture a confidence building win for this colt..........works strongly suggest Salder has him very ready as he probably realizes he may lose the horse here at the claiming box

5  Slammer Time   sat too far off a dull pace in last and still managed a 1 length beaten 3rd......and his race 2 back run at today's same level is quite solid here

4  Atticus Jack    consistent sort might need a little more punch in the late stages.....fits fine here if T C Baze gets it out of him

8  Gold Medallion

race 3    average clarity

5  Penny Of Henny    good history on conventional dirt.......layoff run in last is better than appears in print........broke a little slow and ran 3 wide in a (somewhat) fast heat........and Spawr is awfully tough when he drops a claiming notch which is the case here

2  Courtside    lead type only is likely to get what he needs here......but........the track hasn't been too kind to lead types this week (so far) or I would easily have made this Sadler claimer my top pick

7  Gutshot Straight   blocked in the stretch in last or would have won by a couple of lengths......sure like the step up in claiming.......horse might not have been used up in last because of being blocked.....might be feeling great

6  Yes It's Snowing

race 4    slightly below average clarity

5  Disko Dasko    definitely on the right end of the learning curve.......filly is likely to move forward 2nd out after the layoff and 2nd start in the good old U S of A

1  Upbeat Mood   filly appears to be the speed of the speed here and she has done little wrong in 3 lifetime sprint races.....and her running lines hint that she can run from off of it if need be.....an obvious plus

6  Jubliant Girl   all three lifetime races are on the SA hill turf course and are fairly decent.....and......the last effort is disguised by a bad trip

race 5    slightly below average clarity

8  Tribal Chatter   away for 10 months but training as if she is meant and ready fresh off of the bench......finished her work regiment with 2 consecutive 6F (both 3 of 13) works under 1:14 flat

5  Merry Moon    work tab at Tup is too good to ignore for this 1ster even though the trainer's credentials getting 1st timers ready aren't much......he might upset the apple cart here

2  Rich In Tradition   2 of 6 lifetime races are quite strong versus this soft looking group......both were run fresh.....not fresh today......so she will need to break the mold somewhat to bring her "A game"

6  Zuzu's Petals

Long-shot Possibiliities:   3  Dulcemia   appears to appreciate conventional dirt over other surfaces.....wide trip in last and still managed 3rd.......jock upgrade....and a better trip...... and a small move forward might spell "upset"

race 6    average clarity

4  Red Man Run   seems to be a vastly improved four year old gelding since switching to the SA hill grass course........won quite easily in latest.....might be plenty left in the tank for today and gets to race with 3 lbs less

2  Dixieland Blues   consistent sort is likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving position behind what on paper looks like a lively pace

8  Johnny Be Mine    sharp hill grass race in latest.......fits well here if Krigger can avoid a suicidal speed duel.....one way or another.........trainer has had a stellar SA meeting

7  Urban Hunter

race 7    average clarity

6  No Tricks For Jack   boxed on the run-up or most likely would have won last........race 2 back was also decent.........good history back in short rest........16 days off sure qualifies as short rest

7  One Fast Frog   very strong numbers the two times (one of which was her last) this mare was able to get the front end early.....might need to prove she can run as well chasing today as the 2 horse has very strong quarter mile early speed

8  Magic Mama   seems to be rebounding back into top form.....seems like a very good sign that the red hot Steve Knapp steps her up multiple levels......might be feeling awfully good

4  Mary Contrary

race 8    slightly above average clarity

6  Mizdirection    4 for 4 on the SA hill turf course and 3 of those wins were Graded races......enough said

2  Schiaparelli   solid forward move 1st time with the blinkers on in last......solid work tab since........Mike Puype runner is not impossible to upset top pick Mike Puype superstar

1  Purim's Dancer   filly is 4 for 4 on the grass and 3 of those races were on the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course........very deserving of taking on the best which she attempts to do today

race 9    slightly below average clarity

6  Schackbamalama    blinkers off didn't work in last........they are back on today.....repeat of his race 2 back with the blinks on would easily make him the one to overcome

7  Just Your Shadow   20 to 1 in MSW debut which was on the grass suggests Miller was just making sure his runner didn't love the grass........now that he didn't he puts this 3 year old in a low level maiden claimer which his dirt works hinted he belongs when running on the dirt

2  Buck's Tornado   nice tightly spaced work series might have this Moreno 1st timer all wound up and ready to roll for his debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

1  Surf Heaven

5  Dockweiler

8  Win Machine
