Hollywood for Thursday 11 July 2013

[private]

Nice card to start the final week of racing at Hollywood Park for the Spring/Summer meeting. Hollywood will be back for it's last meeting ever next Fall. That saddens me and I have only been covering the California racing scene for the last one half dozen years after decades of being a part of the Chicago, Kentucky and the South Florida racing scene. It reminds me of how I felt when Hialeah (a beautiful facility) in South Florida and Sportsman's Park (not so beautiful but the coolest bullring racetrack ever) in Chicago closed.

race 1    slightly below average clarity

4  Warren's Wild Thing   Richard Baltas has popped with 6 of last 10 sprint to route........significantly weaker competition might help this somewhat of a hanger go on by in the stretch

2  Coloursoftheglen   seems at his very best running long on synthetic surfaces and that is the case here

3  Beer Meister    daylight (of over 5L) win after the claim by Jeff Bonde in latest.....claimed by Linda Mikus......can lower % trainer keep the improved form intact.....fits well if she accomplishes the task

race 2     average clarity

2  King Bill   solid layoff win at Golden Gate 2 races back versus similar.......OK route in next seemingly just a touch over his head.........aggressive GG work regiment since.....back to a sprint......seems like fit here

4  Run'n On Residuals   obvious turf tightener over his head in layoff last......well meant today......speed-ball has some ES competition here that he will need to put away early as he appears to be a LTO (lead type only)

7  Smokin Gun   nasty fractions totally set things up for this mid pack runner in last which was at GG at today's 5 1/2F distance........plenty of speed here might set things up once more

1  Buds Pal

race 3    slightly below average clarity

9  Miranda Rose   capable of setting some stout fractions that open up leads in MSW affairs at GG......might be very loose with drop into filly state-bred mdn 50K........N Cal trainer Myadi  is strong with shippers and 1st time running in maiden claiming

5  Soothe My Soul   James Cassidy 1st timer has hit track every 7 days since the 28th of April.......and she works as if she owns some early gas.........and mom has tossed 6 winners from 7 starters

3  Pia Jane   trainer has a good history when he drops from MSW racing to maiden claiming in a horse's 2nd lifetime start.......that is today's scenario......and Craig Dollase runners have been firing on all cylinders of late

1  Chumash

race 4    average clarity

5  Proud Boss   on the right end of the learning curve......and the works since this colt's last are the best set of drills for a given level from the Armstrong barn in many a moon.......step up out of maiden claiming seems like a smart move

6  Blue Tone    good forward move in 2nd lifetime start and good works since......and draws 1st time Bejarano.........likely to be in this affair from the get go

3  Artic North   tightly spaced impressive drills for this Dollase 1st timer.........sure think it is a good sign that the connections start this cheap $2K yearling purchase working stoutly in a MSW race

7  Corinthian's Song

race 5    average clarity

3  Queen Mercury   not much in layoff last........but.........her turf sprint effort down the hill at SA is strong and it is disguised by a bad trip.....mega jock upgrade for today to the meets near top gun (believe he is 4 behind Mr. Tamalo)  in Bejarano who owns both lifetime wins on this four year old filly

6  Promiscuoussuances   last 6 endeavors on the grass or the AW fit solidly and 1/2 of those efforts are somewhat hidden.......switch to Gomez who is 2 for 2 riding for Mike Mitchell over the last 2 months

5  Funny Belle   whenever a new trainer takes over the training duties of a given horse when it is a private deal (as opposed to a claim) and he drops down his new runner it is usually a positive.....and.......the trainer in this case is having his best S Cal meeting in many a moon and has done better than his 15 2 3 3 record would indicate

8  Sleep Tight

race 6    slightly above average clarity

9  Kill Shot   broke a little slow in MSW debut and then made a premature rush for the 2nd quarter in a 6 furlong affair........ran about 22 Flat.......yikes and then some...........did extremely well to only get beat by 3L for the win.........impressive endurance building 6F drill since......seems like a ton here if he learns from his racing experience and settles done some

3  Proven Warrior   better than par in both lifetime starts despite wide trips in both races......off pace runner will be hoping the top pick will get some heat early......awfully nice runner/figs to be a 2nd choice in a MSW affair

5  Tryfan   Baffert 1st timer is out working his purchase price at sale of $22K.......seems like a very good sign that the connections start him in a MSW........many a superstar has been bought at $22K or less

7  Holy Lute

race 7    slightly above average clarity

1  Pulpit's Express   solid route turf speed efforts in last two......1 post........best early gas once again.........one of the circuits best speed riders remains up........and Sadler has won with 8 of his last 25 2nd outs after the claim which is the case here.....plenty of positives

3  Turn On The Pumps   switch to Espinoza who has teamed up with Gaines to win with 3 of his last 6 mounts for her.........consistent route grass horse seems likely to sit 2nd or 3rd and should be able to save save ground for the majority of the race

7  Toledo Eddie    solid forward move in a sprint grass race with 1st time Bejarano in last........first at a route but has won in a two turn 7F sprint race in Idaho.........might be able to get a decent chase position behind our top pick

6  Uncle Dick

Long-shot possibilities:   2  Unusual Jazz   has won this level twice before......last two races were no chance bad trips......better post today.....in fact last win can from the 2 post with the same rider up

race  8    slightly above average clarity

6  Inherit the Throne   fell way off in 2nd lifetime start.....big mc debut at 10K higher and it is somewhat hidden by a slightly tardy start and a wide trip.......excellent reassuring drill since her last...........rebound seems likely and at a price for "no name" connections

3  Silver N Sassy   debut back in April is decent.......race 5 weeks ago seems like a gimme to drop and go 1st time in a maiden claimer this afternoon

5  Larocco   stout work tab for the Dollase 1st timer especially considering the level of racing........and he is using his go to guy for the meeting in Maldonado.......works hint that this filly owns some early gas and she has the right jock up if she does

1  She's Holy

7  Swiss Sugar

6  Vegas Bound
