Santa Anita for Friday 25 October 2013

[private]

Breeders Cup 2013 starts one week from today.

Not the best of race cards today but you never know.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly below average clarity

3  Town Belle    turf to dirt appears to be a good thing.........cut back of 1/16th appears to be a good thing.......and running at the 16K level appears to be less ambitious and a good fit for this Jeff Mullins mare

6  Fiesta Express   best on conventional dirt......low percentage trainer but he has done a nice job with this five-year-old mare......jockey upgrade

1  Quinnette   blinkers off and 1st on the grass (poor turf pedigree) and placed 2 levels higher put the brakes on this filly in her last which was her 1st out after the claim by Powell......spell G I M M E..... or...... one bad move by the connections.......full throttle go today with a jock upgrade

7  Pawn Shop

race 2    average clarity

1  Blue Collar Boy   lifetime two best were on the front end.......set a fast half in last and rightfully tired in his 1st ever at a route......switch in apprentice riders from 0% to 12% at the meet.......rate it a 50/50 chance he gets the lead today

3  Sarangani   decent layoff run in last.......chased our top pick.....sharp work since.......Maldonado is up so he most likely will go after the lead as well......lookout if he gets a jump on the 1 horse as he owns 1 win and 2 2nd's the 3 times he has found the front end

6  Public Defender   tossed a clunker in last after a bad start......needs a rebound.....claimed by Mikus who is a low % conditioner overall but decent 1st out after she claims.......deep closer will have fingers crossed the 1 and 3 go at it eye to eye early on

4  Alydidit

race 3    slightly below average clarity

1  Cravin' the Heat   finally back to what this filly can handle that being the grass......she fired a decent sprint down the hill and now attempts a turf route for the 1st time.......good pedigree to handle one......good post......hot trainer/rider team

3  Dow Diva   back to Maldonado who has gotten the most out of this filly......very good history back in short rest.......15 days qualifies........clunker in last but a major rebound seems likely today

9  (Also Eligible)  Little Unusual   sat too far back in latest......put in an impressive late run......major jock upgrade for today........trainer is good running a horse back in micro-rest

7  Coconut Cream Pie

6  Tiz Zoe Cee

race 4    slightly above average clarity

6  King Maya   seems like a logical layoff drop (I know I would have dropped when I used to own horse's) as this is only race no. 5 in a span of 22 months.....bills.......bills.......bills

7  Masochistic   A. C. Avila isn't too hot with 1sters but this gelding has too good of a work tab to ignore versus a seemingly soft bunch

8  Honored Hero   up the track in his maiden debut over at Fairplex......has trained decently since on the SA dirt.......Mullins runner deserves another shot

9  Chicago Hero

Long-shot consideration:   4  Destino   25 start maiden has never been better.......last which was at SA is much better than appears in print.......broke poorly and ran wide......did well to be only beaten by 5L......can be charging late if his low % trainer/rider can get a good effort out of him for the 4th consecutive race

race 5    slightly below average clarity

(also eligible no.9  Bornatthetrack has a shot if gets in)

3  Maxx the Giant   improved grass horse since the blinkers were added.......last two efforts are better than appear on paper......broke slow in last and sat too far out of it.......nasty paced duel two races back and only beaten by 1/2L....controlling speed here if breaks cleanly today

1  Navarre   blinkers on and good speed jock Maldonado up.......seems like a good thing as outside of our top pick there isn't much speed in the race.....bred to run all day so the extra furlong ought to be a plus

8  Citron Kid   1st time gelding......1st time running with the blinkers.......and he sure is bred to appreciate a 1/16th more than he ran in his last on 6 Sept which was a decent race at Golden Gate

7  Valtari

race 6   average clarity

1  Frenemy   not too hot on AW surfaces so the drop here on the SA conventional dirt seems more significant.......decent drills and the fact Bejarano sticks tells me this declining horse is still healthy enough for this bottom level condition claiming race

5  Warren's Joe T.   this gelding's 3 "dirt" route races stand out like a sore thumb as by far his best career efforts.......one mile route here

7  Bobby Flay   all 3 lifetime fast rated route races stand out as three of his best lifetime races.....very similar to our 2nd choice but not as pronounced

2  Point Happy

race 7    slightly below average clarity

1  Quiet Force   all 3 lifetime grass races are decent........sharper recent works........and Richard Mandella is often at his best 3rd out after a layoff and that is the case today for this colt

8  My Friend Jimmy   on the right end of the learning curve and the curve has had an upward bend to it since Tom Proctor took over the training responsibility.......won his last with the rail 24 feet out so that might bode well for his chances with the rail out only 6 feet more today

7  This One's for Mel   very consistent grass runner especially since Miller took over.......same winning rider with 2 lbs less than his last.......would have rated higher if this race was less than 1 1/8th as he has been a little flat late at 1 1/16th

6  Spring Up

race 8    slightly above average clarity

4  Broker Bret   keeps dropping and not graduating.....but 1st time Bejarano today and that seems awfully significant on a 20K drop (40-20) in maiden claiming

1  Arizona Wildcat   last two races fit well at today's bottom maiden claiming level......very sharp 5/8ths drill since his last race.......Iggy his been riding better of late and knows this youngster well

6  Coranto   best on the conventional dirt.....and best in sprints......and it showed in his last two races......fits fine if his low % trainer can get a 3rd straight strong run out of him

7  Anytime

8  Swiss Sword

9  Karaiskakis
