Santa Anita for Saturday 2 November 2013

[private]

Seems dangerous to have so many races with average or slightly above average clarity ratings on a Breeders Cup card. Too many wild results in the B.C. over the last dozen years or so. How about no winners in the fifty cent pick 5 yesterday with a monstrous pool. That is hard to do.

I do like the card but my confidence level for B C races is falling off the charts the last few years whereas other significant race days such as Derby Day - Belmont day - Arlington Million Day is sky high which has been the case for years.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

superfecta box $867.60

(tri box of top 3 picks $303.20)

9  Toowindytohaulrox   solid forward move in 2nd lifetime start and the race was run down the majestic hillside grass course at Santa Anita.......3 wide pressing the pace and still pulled away late.........eye popping drills since........trainer does well with limited starters.....move forward seems likely

7  Dothraki   would have bested our top pick but bore out badly crossing the dirt and still rallied to finished strong down the stretch...........two useful reassuring works since.......plenty of early gas in this affair to flatter his late run....should be a price

2  Richies Party Girl   filly beat the boys in France in a Grade 3 so she sure ought to fit here versus the boys in a non Graded event.......would have been rated higher if she had shown a good effort without the lead......so far she has been a lead type only

8  Love In The Desert   GB invader has the most grass experience in the field......fits just fine if she is ready for her new connections fresh off the bench

race 2    slightly above average clarity

trifecta box $58.40

5  Anillo   race lacks speed and this three-year-old appears to have enough to be loose and loose with a super combo with speed types in Bonde/Maldonado........excellent work series on the SA surface......won last two race endeavors with 2 months between starts and that just so happens to be the case for today's race

1  Flashback   easily best credentials in the race and would be my top choice if there wasn't somebody that I can see that can go with the top choice in the early stages

3  Zeewat   improving late runner might have a shot if the one horse attempts to go with the 5 horse.......here comes Zeewat late if that occurs

race 3    average clarity

superfecta box $3,959.20

5  Sky High Gal    appreciates firm turf.......gets a good post and rider for her 1st down the SA hill grass course........like the cut back in distance.........ultra sharp on the very firm turf in the a.m.

3  Winding Way   blinkers on to help focus and improve her early speed sure seems like a good move as this Gaines filly runs big when loose on the front end

13  Pontchatrain   very solid move forward in latest which was her 1st down the hill......same effort/energy puts her in the hunt for the circle of joy if Gary Stevens can manage a difficult post

6  Judy In Disguise    probably needed her layoff last.........solid race down the hill last Feb. is a fit here

7  SCRATCHED OUT OF RACE

race 4    average clarity

10  She's A Tiger   owns solid early route speed and she proved she can hold together despite producing strong early pace..........outstanding a.m. work put in at Santa Anita.......should be tough from the get go....believe she is sitting on her lifetime best

7  Untapable   good move forward in 2nd lifetime start and 1st ever at a route........CD invader might be able to get another nice mid pack position which was the route to her Grade 2 win in her last

8  Scandalous Act   4  for 4 when on the lead winning all 4 by more than 4 lengths.....my guess is full throttle early........not out of this if she manages to get the front end......and......handles her 1st race outside of Calder

4  Secret Compass   last fits solidly here.......but am I touch leery that this Baffert baby might regress as the preparatory drills are not very "Baffert like" and Rosy might have taken the 2 horse over this runner

2  Rosaland   very strong late runner........and quite the jockey upgrade for today especally for an off pace type

race 5    slightly above average clarity

top pick over other picks trifecta $206.00

1  Dank   one nice four-year-old campaign for this filly (4 3 0 1).....two Grade 2 wins in the UK and a stunning 4 1/4 length win in the prestigious Beverly D at AP in mid August.......that'll do

6  Marketing Mix    consistent Proctor runner loves to stalk the lead and it sure looks like the pace will be to the advantage of the front runners here with only one true speed horse in the race in the 7 horse

3  Tiz Flirtatious   loves Santa Anita and has never worked better.........you don't see 111:4 Breezing very often in S Cal and especially for the likes of Marty Jones who doesn't push them very hard in the a.m.

2  Romantica  invader from France loves today's 1 1/4 distance (4 3 1 0.... at 1 1/4)........(6 1 1 2) at other distances

4  Alterite   John Velasquez likes to send when he recognizes a lack of speed and there seems to be that here.......good shot to get a ground saving close up position in a race that I think will go slow in the early stages

race 6    Slightly below average clarity

12  Sweet Lulu   filly has done almost everything right for Hollendorfer and she sure is training as if she has remained in good health and feeling good......good shot to sit a length or two off the lead......not a bad place to be the last few days at Santa Anita

6  Ismene   Mike Smith smells blood here if the speed favoring condition is still intact today.......it will be full throttle from the get go......Spawr runner gets awfully brave when loose......3 wins and 3 2nd's in 6 races when loose

8  Dance To Bristol   a running machine wherever she goes.......been many a moon since she hasn't finished 1st or 2nd in a race......nice mid pack/stalking style

5  Teddy's Promise   most likely sits in a nice stalk or press position behind our top pick.......fits here if she brings her "A game"

3  Starship Truffles   tricky barn at times....sure seems like gimme/gimme - go go go today

race 7    average clarity

3  Chips All In   done little wrong in 3 lifetime races down the SA hillside turf course.....colt has a nice smooth action when running on the hill......I envision a good trip saving ground sitting about fourth or fifth with a lively pace being set up front

12  Mizdirection   hard to argue about 5 for 5 on the Santa Anita hill especially considering it is such a specialty race......won this race off of a five month layoff last year......same 5 month layoff this year

5  Caracortado    almost won layoff last with a wide trip..........seems likely to move forward 2nd out after the layoff and receives a jockey upgrade

14  Unbridled's Note   deep closer almost overcame the 13 post last year to win this race........14 post today

race 8    average clarity

13  Havana   owns quite a bit of early speed especially in this spot......so.......full throttle from the gate most likely and with a good speed rider aboard

6  Tap It Rich    freaky good MSW route winning debut for this Baffert runner.......kind of green......if he settles down and breaks better and takes the turns better he could be any kind of a runner today

2  Dance With Fate   best horse in his Grade 1 race in last......caught wide....... and caught wide just off the pace setters.......did awfully well to run 2nd.......owns decent early speed and with today's post a better trip seems likely

3  Mexikoma   broke MSW by 14 in latest which was his 1st on the dirt......sharp outfit snatches him up......impressive works since..........dangerous potential

race 9    slightly above average clarity

7  The Fugue   should have won the F & M B C Turf last year but had a bad trip........beat the boys in a solid Grade One in Ire in last.......likely to hold form as John Gosden is truly a top world class trainer

8  Point Of Entry   superior record at 1 3/8th's to 1 1/2 miles on the grass......and John Velasquez sure knows this superstar inside and out........nearly won this race last year with a surge in the late stages.....likely to sit closer this go around

4  Little Mike   few thought Little Mike could rate and/or get the 1 1/2 miles on the turf......17 to 1 win in this race last year........7 to 1 win in last in Belmont's big 1 1/2 mile Grade 1......slow pace and to the front he'll go......someone goes too fast and he'll take back a little.....that makes for one tough cookie

9  Indy Point   will most likely need lifetime best but seemingly has never trained better and retains Stevens who knows this unusual 1 1/2 configuration (starts on the hill) awfully well....not impossible with a good trip

1  Vagabond Shoes   1st this far but begging to run all day long according to his running lines and his pedigree

race 10    average clarity

pick 3 hit ICE COLD for $75.00

9  Secret Circle   two lifetime fast track sprints (and both at SA) 108:1 as a two-year-old and 107:4 in his last run off a long hiatus from the track.........usually sits just behind the leaders and that would be a nice position to be in here

1  Justin Phillip   seemingly never sharper and I like both of his 6F races at Santa Anita last fall/winter......they are both better than appear in print.......race is loaded with speed and that ought to flatter his off pace style

7 Private Zone   very few thoroughbred sprinters constantly run eye to eye with their competition and have success......this fellow does.....he seems to thrive on it.......I'll be rooting for the "Zone" as I know a couple of the many owners of this horse and they are a couple of nice guys (and players) and awfully good for racing

6  Bahamian Squall   never sharper......last 3 efforts fit and his last at Belmont is disguised by a wide trip on a day being wide was a bigger detriment than it usually is

race 11  slightly above average clarity

8  Wise Dan   10 for 11 on the turf and counting.......I know the Chicago owner and the success of this superstar couldn't happen to a nicer older fellow......."Dan" is a beautiful push button stalker on the grass.....131:3 mile here last year......yikes

1  No Jet Lag   earned one big fig by my book in last (do all my own trips/figs).........trainer is stout at getting back to back strong efforts out of a given horse.....good post......not impossible to upset

5  Olympic Glory   Euro invader has rattled off 3 straight stout efforts......attempts to run off of short rest and short rest off of a long journey........fits big if he can handle the work load and the new environment

4  Obviously   rather dull in last.....but.......works since suggest a rebound.....won't mess around this time I imagine.....will try to shake free and slow it done and wire

race 12    average clarity

top pick, 5th pick exacta $73.00

6  Macho Macho Man    loves the Santa Anita surface and has learned to rate if need be which might come in handy here with 4 or 5 horses that run best (or only run) on the lead

9  Game On Dude   definitely produces his stellar efforts (figs) on the front end.......but he best rate here (plan B) unless the track is more speed biased than yesterday.......plan B makes him a great horse not a super one

8  Palace Malice   when this 3 year old (our Bel top pick winning at 13 - 1) gets a decent trip he can beat anybody.....bad trips in last two endeavors......new jock today.....seems due for a good trip

2  Paynter   very consistent Baffert runner has never run a bad effort on a "fast" track.....not impossible to upset with a clean trip

10  Will Take Charge   new horse with the blinkers off in last three races..........should be flying late
