Santa Anita for Friday 3 January 2014

Decent race card once again this afternoon.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

2  Artemus   exits a fast heat of three-year-old MSW runners where getting beat by 5 with a wide trip was a better than par effort for the level.......1st at a route and 1st on conventional dirt but bred well to handle both........stout rider/trainer team

1  Morning Star   after some very stout preparatory drills this Baffert filly tossed in a dull 5F drill prior to her start which tells me she was a little off for her MSW debut.......drills since say she is back on track and back on track with a route race under her belt......sure feel like we will see more today

5  Abide In Me   consistent filly ran off on the lead by more than a dozen lengths in her latest which was a turf route and logically tired......must have come out of the race in good shape for her trainer to wheel her back in 13 days and get Mike Smith to ride..........might get loose here again.........can run off the pace as well if she doesn't get away early

race 2   slightly above average clarity

3  Let's Get Crackin   believe Spawr passed on the Hollywood meet with this gelding and gave him a nice break because he sure has run big at SA since the crafty trainer took over 5 races back......training like he is meant and ready and if he is he sure appears formidable here

5  Rolling Fog   2 for 2 lifetime winning both lifetime starts in 2012 including the DMFut-G1.......training like he is ready fresh as most Baffert horses are.......should be in the hunt from the get go

1  Roman Threat   efforts/figs off the charts in 2012 for this Baffert runner........not the case in 2013.......but gets 3 months off to try to right the ship and make good things happen in 2014

race 3    average clarity

2  Vibratto Jazz   up for a tag for the 1st time and training as if Sadler wants a big effort out of this horse as he knows he might not be taking him away following the race.......rather sure a top effort will occur today and with a switch to Bejarano.......does have to overcome a tendency to hang in the stretch

6  Maybe Tuesday   good history with M Smith aboard and seems fairly consistent......bit concerned about the distance of 1 18th miles...........might be bit too far for this Mullins runner........but..........he sure seems tough here if it isn't

3  Stoney Fleece   another Sadler runner with a shot.......Bejarano gets off to ride the other Sadler runner (our top choice) but that's OK here as Nakatani is back aboard and he seems to get the most out of this horse.......seems likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip

race 4   average clarity

6  Just Dancing   both lifetime races fit figure wise at today's lower level.....1st on conventional dirt and I like her breeding for it.......in fact I prefer her pedigree to handle "real dirt" more than her pedigree to handle the grass or synthetic

2  Super High Kaylin   both lifetime sprints are par like efforts......O'Neill is solid with the sprint-sprint-route scenario.......four-year-old filly owns some early gas and likely will use it here to get a jump on the field

1  Lake Maracaibo    vanned off in last in his 8th lifetime start all in the MSW ranks........drops all the way down to mc20K which indicates a Spawr runner that hasn't recovered health wise too well........but it is encouraging that he is able to get a vanned off horse back to the track in 20 days and with a 5F drill

3  Supreme Ballerina

race 5    slightly below average clarity

5  Ransom Canyon   in good form.....retains Bejarano.......likely will appreciate the 1 1/8th distance and that might not be the case for quite a few others in here

7  Bobby Flay   impressive looking turn move in his last which was at Bhp on the AW.......OK ability on the sod...........gelding seems best taking back and making a late run and that likely will be the strategy here as it should help him cope with the 1 1/8th distance

4  Tribe   a.m. work has gotten quite good of late seemingly out of nowhere.......rather sure a vastly improved effort will occur today.....but the 1 1/8th distance is still a ? mark......maybe the 5 lbs. apprentice allowance will help this Gaines runner stay the distance

1  Copper Bay

race 6   average clarity

6  Happy Idea   able to rate three-year-old gelding in a field loaded with "lead type only" runners......claimed at GG by Vann Belvoir and the new trainer gets Bejarano to accept the mount........should be closing on all the collapsing speed in the stretch

7  Betting McCann Can   lone win came when staying off the pace.........T C Baze seems likely to use that strategy here and if he does he is likely to be in an advantageous position

2  Tosheen   seems best of the speed horses in here and has won 3 of his last 4........and he gets Maldonado who is quite a bit more accomplished with speed horses than he is with off pace runners

3  Oneandonlyloveman

race 7  average clarity

5  Kinz Funky Monkey    big grass effort at Hollywood at 6F setting a powerful pace and holding on to win and did it off of a long layoff.....and then in her other lifetime grass race which was at Dmr at 5F she only was beat by 1 3/4 lengths despite being shuffled back 5L at the start.........that is impressive.......solid 5F grass drill just 6 days ago.....believe this filly really likes sod and will show it today

6  Miss Lucky Sevens   solid history sprinting turf or AW (3 1 2 0)...........likely has remained in good form.......retains Bejarano for a 3rd straight race.......nice mid pack running style

9  Blues And Silvers   grass cutter seemingly has boosted her chances since switching to sprint grass racing........won for Gryder at basically the same level of competition in her last and Gryder has been in a slump.....back to Stevens today.......been a speed type and might have to cope early on with our top pick.....but than again Stevens might try to get her to rate some and avoid a suicidal speed duel with the 5 horse

3  Llandudno

race 8   average clarity

5  Fulmerized   good move forward in latest his 2nd lifetime race and the effort sure fits providing this colt can run the same kind of effort in his 1st ever on conventional dirt......difficult call pedigree wise as to his ability to handle it

7  White Front Freddy   5 1/2 furlongs is a good fit for this three-year-old as he hasn't shown much endurance.........he might love the SA surface as he just worked a powerful near bullet 5F drill on it's synthetic surface......and that work is vastly better than what he ever showed in the a.m. at GG

11  Sharkbait Willie   so so in both lifetime races......but he is a 1st time gelding today and a nice work series hint the minor surgery did him some good

9  Johns Journey

10  Sams Blue Cat

8  Californis Jade
