Santa Anita for Thursday 9 January 2014

So so card this afternoon with quite a few fields that are weak for their given level. I find that fields of weakness (projected to be run below par for the given level) are less reliable than fields of strength where a better than par effort/fig (for the given level) will likely occur. This rings true for yours truly regardless of racing level - from an 8K claimer to a Graded Stake race and everything in between.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Turn On The Brites   3 of 4 races run at SA fit here.......raised up a notch in latest and competed well and raised up a notch again today.......that says that this Matt Chew five-year-old is doing well and likely to fire another good effort

1  Fighting On   good history on conventional dirt......that might be why Hess skipped running his recent 14 Oct claim at Hollywood and rested him for SA.....steps up a couple a level......new trainer might like what he sees

6  Congregationalist   rebound of sorts in last in 16,000 nw2......shockingly passes running today at 12,500 nw2 (in race 6) instead of here at 25,oo0 nw2.....so that tells me he is improved......but than again Cerin seldom takes much risk with his claimers.......so this might be a dirty him up over his head tune-up.......tough call

race 2    slightly below average clarity

4  Magic Mark   obvious looking tune-up (and a decent one) in MSW debut as this Calbred sprinted in open company and went off at 14 to 1......and his trainer Ron Ellis is substantially better with 2nd time starters......OK pedigree to get a route of ground......a bit weak on dad's side but strong on mom's

3  Brave Act   runs best with ample time off between starts and gets it........and seemingly training the best that this four-year-old ever has and it is on the SA main track.......likely on or near the lead from the get go and with Bejarano aboard

2  Roman Tizzy   nothing special about 2 lifetime starts which were run at SA late last winter..........returns off of the long layoff and returns as a 1st time gelding........a.m. work is vastly improved this time around hinting that the time off and/or the surgery did him a world of good

race 3    slightly below average clarity

2  Too Fast to Pass   Hollendorfer just snatched this four-year-old gelding at the claiming box who has been consistently competitive......his new runner likely is doing quite well as the conditioner was able to get him to work 8 days following his race and then work 6 days later in a solid 59:4........steps up two levels and appears ready for the challenge

3  Limited Response   solid history/record one turn dirt races (3 2 1 0)......and his best race by quite a large margin was his only race at 7F at SA.......away since May but his a.m. preparation suggests he is ready fresh off of the bench

4  Money Canyon   four-year-old gelding has been on quite the streak since early June with a record of (7 3 1 2 1).........and he has won has last two endeavors at SA.......Kristin Mulhall just claimed and she is fairly decent 1st out after a claim......her new runner has a nice mid pack/stalking style

race 4    average clarity

Rambling House   exits a fast heat of mdn30K runners where this fellow ran better than par when you adjust for being wide.......same effort fits nicely here and a 2nd move forward in this his 3rd lifetime start would make him quite formidable

5  Vegas Street   has trained well at Santa Anita but not necessarily of the caliber of a MSW runner.....so that tells me that his MSW debut was nothing more than a learning experience and that he now is well meant and a factor in his 2nd lifetime start dropping to a 30K maiden claiming tag

4  Keeneland Kittten    solid wake-up in his 4th lifetime start (which was at Church Downs) and his 1st ever on conventional dirt.........shows up in California with Cerin as has trainer and for 10K less in maiden claiming..........seems dangerous

1  Cleardofallcharges

race 5   average clarity

1  Turn On   Drysdale is not much of a trainer with 1st time starters these days but the work regiment for this filly hints she is ready for her debut......which granted..........is no easy task at 1 mile on the grass.....but....this sure looks like a soft spot and her last work hints she has some speed and there is a lack of it

6  Princess Genevieve    decent turf MSW debut and two nice drills since........and I sure like her pedigree to appreciate a mile grass affair..............hot trainer in Hollendorfer.........and an even hotter rider in Mike Smith

5  Euroclydon   just missed graduating by a nose at today's same level and distance on the grass at Bhp.........beat 10 foes by more than 2L.......that's the good news......the bad news is the fairly weak fig the race was run in.........seems vulnerable but by whom?

8  Papa's Flashy Girl

race 6   average clarity

7  Warren's Tyler S.   solid 7F furlong race at SA three races back which was the last time this Gutierrez colt ran at Santa Anita......very impressive stretch run........fell off quite a bit in latest but the works since strongly suggest that a rebound will occur today.......getting Bejarano up sure supports my conclusion

3  Vantage Point   only 1 lifetime race on the main track and the effort run at Bhp over a year ago is strong for today's level and disguised some by a bad trip worth about 6L.......1st on conventional dirt but his 1st work on it and his pedigree suggest that he will like it

4  Jovita's Tuffy   never have enjoyed coping with significant Mitchell drop downs.....so very hard to judge how much they have declined.......so in a bit of a cop out I suggest.........tossing a coin

5  He Will Amaze

race 7   slightly above average clarity

2  Monastic   likely loose on the lead just like in his last race for a red hot trainer in Proctor and especially with his grass runners.......and he is loose on the lead with Gary Stevens instead of apprentice rider VanDyke......that'll do just fine

1  Power Foot   best race of career was this fellow's lone race at today's distance of 1 1/4........and .......Richard Mandella is very stout 3rd out after a layoff which is the case here

race 8   average clarity

2  Secret Memo   seems like a good spot for this Miller filly in that both lifetime races at SA at 5 1/2 furlongs fit well here.......and she draws a good post........should be in it from the get go and likely can save some ground

4  Circular Logic   best ever was her maiden debut and the race was at SA and at today's abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs........declined since her debut.......but off since March so "fresh" once again today.......that seemingly makes her dangerous

7  Unique Suances   fairly decent work series for this Vienna 1ster and fairly decent might be good enough as this race is screaming for a "new shooter"........might have speed as mom could fly early.......and a speed jock is put up.......hmmm
