Santa Anita for Thursday 16 January 2014

Here's hoping apprentice Drayden Vandyke has a great day as we have him selected on top 2 times and 2nd once in a three mount afternoon for the 10 lbs. apprentice rider. Seems a bit scary but it should help the price of each runner he rides.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

2  Presenceofgenius   very impressive MSW debut at Bhp running 6F on the turf and breaking the 109 Flat barrier........since the race his conditioner Mark Glatt has put 3 solid drills into his new shooter including a bullet 5F work just 5 days ago.........should be fit and ready for a two turn grass race of one mile which he is bred well to handle

3  Incline Village   exits the same race as our top choice only losing to him by the smallest of margins.....sheds 2 lbs and gets a slight rider upgrade (hard to knock Kayla Stra on the grass these days)........like our top pick he owns a pedigree that should handle the one mile distance

4  Perfect Set   race four back fits and is very hidden by a brutal trip and the two runners that beat him came back to win.......seldom used Prat was aboard that day and is is aboard again today.........jock in general rides OK on the grass and has a smaller field to cope with today.......last was the layoff tune-up........go today back on the grass

race 2    average clarity

4  Horse Laugh   on the right end of the learning curve and has never trained like he is training now.........58:4 bullet work two weeks ago at SA......seems to bode well for his chances 1st time on it's conventional dirt surface

2  Maximinus   another on the improve and training stellar..........lead type only seemingly needs to put way the 3 horse and my pace work says he does have slightly more early speed

1  Candiz   nice off pace win in his maiden debut.......steps up quite a bit today but if the 2 and the 3 press each other hard early this Walsh 2nd timer ought to be flying late........significant step up and a sharp 4F work since his debut hints the race muscled him up

race 3    slightly above average clarity

1  Clouds Clearing   seems to run on any surface and showed he can handle a route in last in a solid 3rd on the grass.........never trained better (blinkers on) and the work has been at SA.......seems poised for his lifetime best today.......seems likely to get a nice stalk position behind our top pick

2  Hobbits Hero   likely loose in his 1st ever at a route of ground.....like the endurance building 5F / 6F / 6F / 6F works series spaced 6 to 7 days apart for his preparation for his 1st route endeavor........T C Baze is coming around and he has always been a good rider on the front end

7  Ghost of Harrenhal   obviously placed over his head in layoff last...........sprint gimme......go today back at a route.........race two back fits somewhat and is disguised by a bad trip by Kayla Stra who is riding significantly better now than then......by my take she is the most improved rider in S Cal in the past decade........way to go momma Stra

4  Lieutenant Seany O

race 4    average clarity

4  Tommy Danzinger   shipper was placed in a non claiming event on the turf in an apparent gimme........drops to the lowest level he has seen since early summer........has learned to rate and runs all day when he is right so the 1 1/8th should be a plus and it won't be for quite a few in here.......high % trainer in Giker..........10 lbs apprentice up.......seems likely to have plenty of horse left for the stretch

2  Big Wags   East coast trainer (shifted to the West coast now) drops his 2nd out after the claim runner multiple levels.........his history out East is stellar when he does.......and how many lengths of rider upgrade is there Tammy Piermarini to Rafael Bejarano...........seven-year-old likes SA but the distance is a question mark as this is amazingly his 1st ever at 1 1/8th

6  Tuckers Point   seems best on conventional dirt.........good history back in short rest which is the case today........not much in last but it was off of 6 weeks off and might have been nothing more than public work-out

5  Graeme Crackerjack

race 5    slightly below average clarity

4  Zipping My Way   all three grass races run at three different tracks fit here fairly well and her last which was at Bhp is hidden by a bad trip......doubt the hill at SA will be a hindrance as she has shown she can handle multiple turf configurations.....1st time in claiming and her trainer is very dangerous 1st time ever up for a tag with a given horse

2  Happybirthdaybaby   fairly consistent sort........1st out after the claim by Hollendorfer which year in and year out is a dangerous proposition.......owns a touch of speed in an affair lacking it.......42% rider/trainer team over last two months.....yikes

7  Travesura    needs effort two back and needs to run it off a 3+ month layoff.........Mullins sure has been hot with his grass runners this meet and might have this filly ready fresh as she has scored twice off of the bench in the past

3  Indygo F M A

Long-shot consideration:   8  Disko Dasko    last sure looks like it was a tune-up to drop and go 1st time in claiming........race lacks speed and this filly appears to have enough to sit close......and when she has been near the front she has responded to well

race 6   slightly below average clarity

3  Common Confusion    just keeps getting better........and better........and better.........and better.........and better..........and........jock and trainer sure could both use a win

6  Reps and Warrants   goofy looking ride and 1st time at a route in 3rd lifetime start resulted in a dismal effort......either way toss out the effort......other two lifetime races were decent with both being sprints.........7F today

8  Anythingtogeteven   cut back from 4 straight routes to 7F seems like a plus........and........retains Bejarano who got familiar with this gelding for the first time in his last outing

10   Stenoa

race 7    slightly above average clarity

2  Street Icon    9 to 1 in 5 horse field on the SA main track strongly suggests the race was needed and the 2nd place finish might have surprised his connections to some degree........the works since are as good as it gets with one of the fastest breezes you will ever see in S Cal of 46:2 B.....has stellar grass breeding and has a good chance of being at his best on the sod......we shall see

1  Toowindytohaulrox   both lifetime races down the SA hill grass course are better than par..........1st time Mike Smith and at this meeting that has been a very dangerous proposition

6  Station House   turf route.......cutting back to........down the SA hill turf sprint is often a good maneuver especially off a blistering route pace which this R Mandella colt set in his latest.........and retains Stevens for the 4th straight time

5  Bourne Hot

race 8    average clarity

5  Elegant in Silk   filly has run well fresh off of the bench in the past..........fresh today and returns at the bottom level for maiden claimers at SA........so.......if this filly is still in decent health I doubt this is a tune-up or Cassidy would have placed this filly at a higher level to protect her fanny from the claiming vultures lurking

11  Kid Rollins   decent debut two back at twice the claiming level.........big stretch run in last from far back at one mile of the turf............22 to 1 in debut..........26 in 1 in 2nd lifetime start.......believe Proctor means bizz today.......won't be 20 something to 1 today

4  Sugar High Kaylin   fell off in latest her 3rd lifetime race and 1st at a route.......back to a sprint and her other 2 lifetime sprints are par like efforts........four-year-old filly has been a manageable stay out of trouble runner in all three lifetime starts which is kind of rare for a bottom level maiden claimer.....and.......an obvious plus

1  Crystalline Indy

7  Putahexonher

6  Hot Outta the Oven
