Santa Anita for Saturday 18 January 2014

Average card at best today but it sure is nice to only have two top selections that are favorites and both are still only 5/2 favorites at that.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Teasing Moment   better horse with the blinkers on and it showed in her last.......showed she can rate which is most often a major plus for lead type only......repeat of last will be tough as nails here

4  Second Time   Calder invader has been off for 14 months but trains as if she is ready to roll for her new trainer Vladimir Cerin.......and she owns two races with the blinkers on that sure make her a major contender here

8  Miracle Merger   solid history on main track surfaces since the blinkers were put on (4 1 2 1)........retains apprentice rider Orozco which these days is a major plus

7  Clearly Confused

race 2   average clarity

3  Addendum   lifetime best effort was the only time this Cerin runner ran at 7F in a race at SA and the effort is somewhat hidden.......five-year-old mare is on the upswing........seems likely to keep the trend going today

8  Mia Isabel   O'Neill knows this mare well so the fact that he steps her way up today seems significant......last two works are vastly improved which supports the notion......1 for 2 on the SA dirt.....should be a price

5  Quinnette    better runner on conventional dirt and her last on the Bhp AW was decent........and she gets the red hot Mike Smith who sure has been on live runners all meet.....very dangerous

1  Julio's Gold

race 3    average clarity

7  Close To The Bridge   Dean Pederson might have found the trump card for this seven year old as he sure has gotten him to work exceptionally well for the last 6 weeks since he claimed him.......gelding owns a good history at SA.........solid back numbers/efforts in his past and I think we might see one of them today

2  Newfound Gold   trainer has been firing on all cylinders of late and he sure has put some strong a.m. work into his 2oK claimer......horse is consistent and seems best running at today's six panels

4  Runaway Wildcat   highly consistent six year old gelding when running on conventional dirt surfaces including Santa Anita..........ships in from GG off of an improved effort 1st after the Moger claim........draws Bejarano.......things point to more today

6  Kafister

race 4    average clarity

1  Berlusconi   off for 1 1/2 years but working as if he is fully ready to roll and roll running at the lowest level of his life......1st ever on the conventional dirt but bred well for it.......trainer is stout dropping MSW to maiden claiming

11  Gold Tie Please   arguably best ever was his lone sprint race and it was at SA......two other races at SA are not bad either.........major league rider upgrade from the day that this gelding sprinted 4 races back in his debut

8  Right On Schedule   worked well prior to mc debut last.....and had support at the windows.....ended up having a bad trip.....fits as well as anyone here if the kinks are worked out for start number 2

6  Artic Warrior

race 5   average clarity

4  Dancingtothestars  all three of her 1 mile grass races are awfully good and quite a bit more impressive than her other 6 grass races at other distances.......1 mile on the sod here..........likes very firm turf and S Cal in in a drought.....rider knows this filly well and usually handles her well

3  Charlie Em   finally draws a decent post......2 for 4 at today's distance.........Nakatani sure is riding well and should be able to save some ground into turn 1........Santa Anita jock colony is in a "time warp" with Smith, Stevens, Nakatani, and Espinoza all riding sharp........and T C Baze is coming around

2  Moone's My Mane   mare has been slipping some since 1st her 1st race in the good old U S of A which was back in April......but Sadler is quite dangerous 3rd out after a layoff which is the case today.........and I like that Bejarano stays aboard........like our 2nd choice seems likely to get good position on turn 1 and that is 2/3rds the battle

1  Gulsary

race 6    below average clarity

2  Cowtownmary    good works and for a barn waking up in a big way........trains like he has some early speed........and if he does he has a good speed jock up and only 5 1/2 furlongs to negotiate

11  Roger Rocket   Baffert 1st timer sure has the works to be a good one and we all know Baff's prowess with first starters.......but........the 10 post at 5 1/2 furlongs will be a challenge

3  Bullwhip   speed crazy in 1st two lifetime starts and tired badly in both races.......but returns off a 8 week break as a 1st time gelding and takes the blinkers off.......working like a different much improved youngster.......might rate today and thus have something left coming for home

8  Pimpernel

race 7    average clarity

8  Moulin De Mougin   after 6 lifetime sprint races Richard Mandella appears to have this filly very well prepared for her 1st ever at a route.........love the one mile drill of 1:39:3 on January 5th.......and last but least she is bred well to go long

1  Clear Pearl   trainer has a good history with shippers from GB and he has this filly training as if she is meant and ready......1st time Lasix is often a plus and 1st time on it today

5  Oscillator   ultra consistent Cal-bred (especially on the sod) tries a route for the 1st time.......really like the last two drills which should put enough endurance into her to get the distance

4  Somethingabouther

race 8    average clarity

6  Hear The Ghost   has done little wrong in 5 lifetime starts and her best ever was her only race at today's distance and it was at SA.........gelding has a nice mid pack running position and seems likely to get that position here

3  Shakin It Up   colt loves SA with 3 wins and a 2nd in 4 lifetime starts..........and he sure gets a major jock upgrade from a struggling jock to a red hot one in Mike Smith.......only negative I can see is that he has yet to prove he can be as good around two turns......today one way or another should answer that question

7  Heir of Storm   totally different vastly improved racehorse since the blinkers were added 2 races back and his latest race is hidden by a bad trip..........like our 2nd choice he does have to prove his ability to get two turns

4  Zeewat

race 9   average clarity

7  Bella Compari   Sadler privately picks up a runner from CD who vastly improved in the mud at CD in her 2nd lifetime start.......steps up into MSW from mdn claiming but is working up to snuff and she is bred to handle turf as mom has tossed 2 grass winners

2  Kitten De Pere   deep closer from the ever dangerous Proctor barn would have been top pick if the 10lbs. apprentice Vandyke wasn't up because it is very difficult from a young apprentice to handle two turn grass races......they just don't see it enough in the a.m.....and so..........they have to learn on the job

3  Dancinginthestreet   improved run in last but will most likely need more today.........ran well in lone race back in short rest in 2nd lifetime start.....so 2nd out after a layoff in her 4th lifetime start seems like a goooooood thing

10  Practising

6  Cacica Dulima

5  Scene Queen
