Santa Anita for Thursday 23 January 2014

Good card today as you can see from the clarity ratings......so.....I sure hope that the main track settles down and evens out as the rail was dull on the weekend and funky in ways I don't understand. The wild payouts on Monday sure supports the notion including 5 of 6 for the pick six paying $69,700.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

3  D'ya Knowwhatimean   not much on the sod in her latest her 2nd lifetime start.........maiden claiming debut run on the AW at Bhp sure looks very solid here........so.........if this O'Neill youngster can fire similar on the synthetic she ought to be tough here........1st time Smith aboard is a good sign she will

1  Sergeant O'Rourke   lone race (which was her debut and at SA) up for a tag was a win........back up for sale this afternoon after facing better........will need somewhat better than her effort/fig that she ran at SA in her debut if our top choice takes to the "dirt"

5  South Sound   nice MSW debut way back in June......not much cookin since.......drop into claiming might him wake up........shows signs of being a lead type only but might own the best early gas here

race 2    slightly above average clarity

6  The Cleaners   5 lifetime races......3 on the grass are dull........2 on the main track surfaces including SA fit quite well here........1 for 1 at today's distance and 1 for 1 with the blinkers on.......should be in the hunt from the get go likely stalking our 2nd pick

3  Advisory  laid up four-year-gelding can really fly early and appears a threat to wire off a good work regiment that suggests he is ready to roll fresh........Mullins is off to a nice start at the SA meeting

1  Salutos Amigos   drops some yet he is in a non-claiming race (such a deal) .........turf to dirt........route to sprint........lone lifetime win came sprinting at SA.......dangerous individual if he is feeling good

race 3    slightly above average clarity

7  Hotradamus   excellent history when running with more than 5 weeks off.......6 weeks since her last and training well........seems likely to sit in a good stalking position behind our top pick and maybe one other........Nakatani sure gets the most out of this gelding (4 2 0 2) and he sure is riding well these days

5  He's A Dance Star   excellent record (5 2 1 2) on the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course and seems at his best with Mr. Bejarano on her back........does her best running on the front end and seems likely to lead here

4  Zimmer   work series for this Proctor eight-year-old strongly suggests he is ready fresh........and then their is that killer "old guys" combo of Proctor/Smith (or Proctor/Stevens).......seems dangerous if he takes to the hill

2  A Toast To You

race 4    average clarity

5  New Order   nice forward move both in final time and pace in last his 2nd out after the layoff and with the blinkers removed.........cut back of one furlong seems like a major plus...........good gate horse to date.........likely will be in the mix from the get go........and......Ben Cecil horses have been firing at the SA meeting a little better than his (6 1 2 0) record would indicate

2  Gutsy Ruler   work series for this Puype 1ster hint that he is ready.......the a.m. work also suggest's he has some early speed.......a good commodity to own in an abbreviated sprint race of 5 1/2 furlongs

7  No Longer Blue   nowheresville in 2 lifetime starts......but the trainer has awoken from the doldrums and just got this three-year-old gelding to work a near bullet 5/8ths drill at SA.....expecting a wake up from this youngster this afternoon......and if it is a significant one his connections will no longer be blue about their new runner

3  W. Giles

race 5     average clarity

8  Through My Eyes   very impressive race in last off the extended hiatus from the track.......dueled 3 wide with solid pace.....did very well to hold on for 2nd..........1st on the sod and 1st long........average pedigree for both.........but an above average trainer 1st on the grass and 1st at a route in Jeff Mullins......likely to be prominent from the get go here

3  Stake Hunter    multiple points of trouble (some of it kind of subtle) for this Mullin's 2nd time starter who started his career in a 6F grass sprint 6 weeks ago........good series of endurance building drills since.......and bred nicely to get the one mile today's race offers

1  We Have Lift Off   last sure seems to be the obvious sprint tune-up (16-1 in a 6 horse field) to boost his fitness (as so often only a race will do) and have him all set for today's turf route......and his pedigree seems decent for a one mile grass affair

5  Thunder Cole

race 6    average clarity

4  Red Sharp Humor   claimed in late November for today's same tag of 8,000........gelding (most likely) has needed more time between starts than the connections were banking on but Mike Pender sure has him training awfully well.....and Pender has woken up in a big way at the Santa Anita meeting.....significant rider upgrade........best ever was at SA at today's 1 mile distance

7  Majestic Moment   brutal trip in last.......did well to get beaten by only 4 3/4 lengths.........late runner might be flying late with the light weight apprentice up

3  Brown Boss   obvious health issues for this gelding dropping out of alw races (and was a 8K vet scratch on Jan. 4th) but did work decently recently.....not impossible if Hess can squeeze one more race out of him

2  Warren's Joe T.

race 7    average clarity

6  Tanquerray   on the improve with almost every start since underrated Herbert Bacorn claimed last April.........beat a couple of horses in her last that ran solidly in their next start.......2 for 2 with Nakatani up and 3 lbs off for today

4  Miss Well Molded   well placed to win back versus Cal-breds.......3 for 9 on the grass at today's distance........1 for 6 at other distances......back to Bejarano who won by daylight with this mare 2 races back

2  Mangita   solid move forward in 2nd lifetime race last spring and it was her 1st on the turf.........layoff last was quite good......so.......it would seem logical that this Bruce Headley filly has the potential for a big effort 2nd out after the layoff today........would have been top choice if it wasn't for the usually reliable Aaron Gryder been so cold these days.......he sure is due to wake up

7  Lil Swiss Echo

race 8    average clarity

3  Runaway Que   impressive 1st ever at a route for the given level in that this youngster dueled in decent pace and still was only beaten 1/2L for the right to graduate......works since strongly suggest the race did him a world of good and that a move forward this afternoon can occur

1  Thunders Echo    two dull route races on the AW to start career........big awakening in 3rd lifetime race sprinting on the conventional dirt at SA.......was it sprinting that woke him up or the "real" dirt ?????.........if it was the dirt that lookout today back at a route

8  Sir Macho   big move forward in 3rd lifetime start and the effort in disguised by a bad trip.....shuffled back early and ran way too wide......and the fact that it was at 7 1/2 furlongs bodes well for his chances to get the 2 turn mile.......1st on conventional dirt but his pedigree to handle it is strong

4  Keeneland Kitten

9  Run For Pleasure

2  Samurai Assault
