Santa Anita for Saturday 1 February 2014

Decent card for today so I sure hope the racing surface plays fair.

Sunday's selections will be posted no later than 7:45 Pacific time because of the early start for Super Bowl Sunday.

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Dunmore East   drop isn't too much of a concern off a step up win as the barn has been placing them where they can win most of the meet and with great success

2  Mensa Heat   Ted West seems to be awakening from the doldrums and drops this consistent gelding from 16K to 8K.........sure like seeing a 5F and 6F drill since his last on 12 Jan.......that tells me he's still in relatively good health......and aren't almost all 8K runners in the "relatively good health" category

5  Always The Same    1st two choices are on the decline so here is a bottom level claimer who appears to be on the improve.....turned the corner some in last and I believe will move forward again today

race 2    average clarity

3  Boller Bomb   very consistent grass runner and especially at SA (5 3 1 0).........and responds well for Talamo.......1st out after the claim for Mulhall who wins her fair share following a claim

5  Silver Hustler    toss out last as she sprinted down the hill which really isn't her game.......race 2 back at a route fits.........T C Baze sticks with the mare and he sure seems to be back riding well after a predictably slow start after being laid up for awhile

4  Fantastic Mizz   fell off quite a bit in her latest but she fits as well as anyone here if she rebounds......seems like a 50/50 proposition that she will make a rebound

race 3    slightly above average clarity

6  Hear The Ghost   race seems set slightly for a closer which this very consistent Hollendorfer four-year-old surely is...........both lifetime route races at SA are very strong and her last is disguised be a somewhat bad trip

4  Holy Candy   SCRATCHED   in good form right now and like our top pick sure likes the conventional dirt that Santa Anita has to offer.........mid pack style fits this affair

2  Appealing Tale   yet another with a nice history at SA.......very much in the hunt for the win if 1 or the 3 don't press the issue early

race 4    slightly above average clarity

5  With A Miracle   seems like a good claim of a six-year-old mare who has been consistent on any surface in her last 6 races.......love the vastly improved bullet work since the claim and the multi-level move up in claiming.......that tells me Mr. Chew has the trump card for this mare

4  Meltarib   another mare who has reeled off quite a few good efforts in a row all on the grass in her case......been awhile since she has been able to wheel back in one months time.....that is the case today and her history says that is a good thing

1  Burns Turn   would have won at this level in her last if she wasn't blocked 3 or 4 lengths on the turn and the stretch in last.......so why 3rd choice you say.......the winning time was somewhat slow for the day.......and........I didn't like her as one of the favorites in her last on the Sadler drop down.......I find in general that Sadler gives nothing away.......but then again a sharp trainer in Miller claimed

 6  Blushing Martha

race 5    average clarity

3  Appealing Resume   just claimed by Puype and he wheels his new runner back for the same $25K claiming price.........has won her last 3 when running for $25K.......and retains Bejarano who is 2 for 2 on the mare

5  Woebegon   another returning for the same tag.........mare is very consistent when she sits on or very near the lead and that looks doable here

6  Vicki Victoria   (4 2 2 0) at today's 6F distance..........(11 0 3 3) at other distances.......tariner is having a good start to the meeting.......dangerous runner

4  Pebble Beach Baby

race 6    average clarity

6  Brother Pete   John Sadler colt runs well 2nd out after a layoff which happens to be the case today............race 2 back off of 23 days rest would be tough for others in here to overcome.........27 days off today and retains Bejarano..........1 1/8th seems like a good fit.......seems ready for best

3  Cervaro   bit short fig wise but 1 1/8th seems like a plus and this Sadler runner has never trained better.....believe ready for lifetime best today

8  Counting Days   back to reality here...........gelding finally gets to run in a grass race other than a Stakes race........would have rated higher if this race was a little shorter as so far this Gaines runner has flatten out in her 1 1/8th races

2  Power Ped

race 7    average clarity

7  Taste Like Candy  filly can rate nicely but in her last she was caught dueling in nasty pace and rightfully tired........Bejarano will avoid that this time around in all likelihood.........which..........will make her stout here

8  Streaming   Baffert filly has done little wrong in two lifetime races and continues to train as if she has a bright future......like our top pick she can also take back and that might be wise as I believe our 4th pick will try hard for the front end

4  Aretmis   race might set up for this filly if the 2, 7 and 8 all press the issue too much early as Mike Smith will likely sit in a mid pack position.....Smith has won his last 3 of 4 mounts for the trainer

2  Fashion Plate

race 8    slightly below average clarity

7  Tom's Tribute   what a race in his last......caught wide near a blistering pace and only was beaten by 1 1/4 for the win.......that is hard to accomplish........and look who is up today........Mr. Gary Stevens

8  Suggestive Boy   plenty of early heat in this affair can give this Mac mid pack runner runner what he wants and despite being away since March he likely will be flying late

4  Si Sage   nice break thru ability wise in last.....ran some efforts in France that are similar but until his last none in the USA.........same effort with a good trip and he can upset the apple cart here

9  Winning Prize

race 9    average clarity

11  Sofos Quick Logic   it has been many a moon since I put a 50 to 1 shot as my top selection but this fellow ran much better than appears in print in his race 2 and 3 back.....but more importantly the blinkers go on today and assuming he has been training with them on then look-out as his a.m. work is vastly better

7  Profile   very suspicious drop of a MSW runner who ran a strong MSW effort at GP in late October.......showed very little in his 1st start for Sadler on opening day.......drops to the bottom.........toss a coin if he is still healthy enough to compete today

8  Rob's Pal   decent 1st ever on the conventional dirt in last......and cut back from 1 mile to 7F is often a good thing........does need to overcome a tendency to hang or would have been top pick

4  Anzeau

10  Captain Salt

6  Dickery Do
