Santa Anita for Thursday 6 February 2014

Decent card to start the new week of racing at the majestic Art Deco palace that is Santa Anita. And that sunny paddock is looking awfully good to this mid-westerner dealing with one of the worst winters in many years.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Mr. Cactus   finally raced where this colt probably has always belonged in his latest.......nearly won the race and would have if it wasn't for a wide trip........Bejarano will be out to make amends

5  Cousin Ricky  showed significant early pace for the 1st time in his last his 3rd lifetime start.........switch to the improving 7 lbs apprentice.......will really fly early in all likelihood if he breaks him well....very dangerous speed here

4  California Jade   only good career race (very stout here) was in 2nd lifetime start with the blinkers on.........nothing much with the blinkers remaining on in his next 3 starts......trainer Bob Hess shakes things up once again this time taking the blinkers off.....can lightning strike twice?

7  Goldnesian    semi-dangerous looking work tab for this 1ster

race 2    slightly below average clarity

2  Wasted at Midnight   very strong efforts the only 2 times this filly ran "fresh"........3 months "fresh today" and a major league trainer upgrade........blinkers off for today and a solid work tab.......rather sure Richard Mandella means business 1st time under the care of the Hall of Fame trainer

4  Provenance   improving with each and every start and this gal's lone grass effort is better than appears in print as she had to check very hard about 5L in her 6F grass race 2 back........did well to beat 1/2 the field.......and her trainer is quite hot at the moment

3  Seattle Charlie    good move forward in 2nd lifetime start for this GG invader......so......2nd out after the layoff likely will lead to a forward move and her last at GG seems quite good......1st on the green carpet but she owns a decent enough pedigree for it

race 3    slightly above average clarity

3  Madoffwiththemoney   trainer is awfully hot with his limited starters (5 3 0 1) and he might like that "winning feeling" as he sees fit to drop his $25K claim for the 3rd straight time ($20K - $16K - $10K today)....recent a.m. work sure hints at a mare that is still in good enough health to compete

1  Mextaxa   consistent sort doesn't flash powerful efforts/figs but she is a smooth running sort and on any surface..........Irving Orozco sure has gotten the job done on her last couple of races and I see very few reasons that he can't once again

4  Warren's Judy   plenty of early gas in this bottom dweller 8K affair can sets things up for a deep closer like this gal........and Bejarano sees fit to ride her for the 4th straight time

2  Raisin' Cain

race 4    slightly above average clarity

6  Cougarontheprowl   very impressive MSW debut win at 1st asking for this Puype filly..........broke a length tardy and still coped with pressing a nasty pace and running a bit wide........same post in the same field size as her last.........same effort as her last and she is likely to take this......and any move forward and she will have the look of a Stakes filly

3  Fanny Brice   powerful forward move in her 2nd lifetime endeavor in back to back races at Woodbine.......so.......2nd out after a good layoff race at SA sure ought to make her dangerous today.........if......... history repeats itself

1  Kerrilyn   1st or 2nd in all her lifetime races until a very bad start in race number 9 put her off the board........seems well placed here as she is in for the optional claiming tag of $40K 1st time out for Kory Owens.....stout jockey/trainer team in Stra/Owens

race 5    average clarity

6  Cheeky Stone   on the right end of the learning curve and the curve seems likely to bend sharply upward here if she runs to her vastly improved a.m. work which likely occurred with the blinkers on.......1st time blinkers today for this Hofmans runner

4  Moonlight Stroll   very solid maiden debut 2 races back.........disappointed in 2nd lifetime start which was her 1st on conventional dirt and 1st at a route..........same surface and distance but back in short rest for a barn that has been getting the job done.......seemingly deserves another shot

7  Lovely Instinct   three-year-old filly has a strong shot here if she handles her 1st ever at a route of ground.....that is somewhat debatable as her breeding says yes.......but.........her trainer's 1st at a route record says no

2  La Casadora

race 6    average clarity

1  Lord Kira   a.m. prowess hints this proven route grass cutter is ready fresh off of the bench and if she is she can wire the field.....and I like that fact she has gotten out of the gate well from the one post in two past route races

3  Readyforhercloseup   nice rebound in form in last which was the 1st race following the Belvoir claim.......works since suggest even more can occur this afternoon.....good post and rider......seems likely to get a good trip

4  Elegant in Silk   just fired (arguably) her best ever in the USA in her sixth start in this Country......and the race was off of a 7 month layoff....so.......she might move forward 2nd out after the layoff and if she does she fits well here back on the grass........which she might prefer slightly

7  Commander Cloud

race 7    average clarity

1  J and S Express   had always flashed some talent now and then but has become consistent since Belvoir took the blinkers off of this seven-year-old mare four races back........sharp drill prior to her last which was a good effort down the hill.......and 2 sharp works since.......might never have been sharper then now

3  Always a Chance   another who appears to be in top form right now.......beat our top pick in her latest which was at today's level......surface.... and distance...........but she is a late runner and she must overcome a distinct lack of speed in the race or she would have been the top pick-a-rooo

6  Mark of a Gem   filly has been laid up since May but Yakteen appears to have her all wound up and ready to roll........will need her very best to win this but she isn't impossible to give it especially as she might be the best speed in the race

race 8    average clarity

3  Melatonin  very good 1st ever down the majestic SA hill grass course in last............earned a very strong adjusted for trouble fig when you consider that he lost about 6L to being caught wide........new jock today and it is to the meets leading rider to date in Bejarano

1  Los Borrachos   solid move forward in 2nd lifetime start for this Richard Mandella colt.........bred well to handle the transition to the turf for the 1st time.......same effort as his latest with a good trip fits very well.......another move in the right direction and he might be the one to overcome

8  Dothraki   last race wasn't bad which was in a race run down the hill at SA as the final time was fast for the class and he didn't get the cleanest of trips......race 2 back also down the hill is very good running 2nd despite having another bad trip.......Kayla Stra can do better than that and if she does this colt has a shot here at reaching the circle of joy

7  J Kat

9  Kozani

5  Excessive Kid
