Santa Anita for Saturday 8 February 2014

Seems like a very good card as you can tell by my "clarity" ratings. It is also a very interesting card. Miles different from yesterday's.

Best of luck as always

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Yankee Rebel   running well in turf routes of late and now runs down the SA hill where he might be at his best.......and Bejarano has won the last 6 of 10 races run at SA

2  Cinco De Mario   best on turf/AW so getting off the "dirt" following his best ever on it bodes well for his race down the hill this afternoon......ran better than par for today's level in his only race on the hill.......shot here if he is up to that effort

7  Cueno   monster wake-up in latest on the SA dirt.......and he can handle the turf just fine........would have been top pick if it wasn't for the 0 for 19 on the grass record for the jock who in his defense seldom gets to ride or work on the turf

6  Fighting On

race 2    average clarity

2  Party Time   nice work tab for this 1ster even by Baffert standards.........ultra impressive that this colt worked a bullet 6F gate drill just five days ago and is able to start today........and then there is mom.......7 winners from 7 starters two of which were Stakes winners

3  Little Curlin   nice improvement in 2nd lifetime start and 1st under the guidance of Jerry Hollendorfer......last with a better trip fits........move forward and he might be the one to beat

4  Act   John Sadler seems kind of overdo to have a good 1st timer and maybe this colt is the one.......didn't come cheap.....and.....he is training as well as any 1st timer for Sadler in quite some time.......rather sure he's ready to rock and roll

race 3    average clarity

3  Magic Beam   trainer is on fire and he hasn't been afraid to drop his horse's to win which is the case here.....and this fellow's last is solid.....and......he has a good history returning off of short rest

7  Muchos Besos   Charles Treece is very dangerous 1st off the claim which is the case here.........his new gelding likes the SA main track and maybe a bit more than Bhp and this guy's last two at Bhp fit fine.....so logic says a move forward can occur today....and if it does he will be tough

5  Sammy's A Runnin'   way too flat in the late stages at 7F......cut back of 1/2 furlong should really help......last 4 efforts running at 6 1/2F fit well here and two of them were at SA

4  Big Wags

race 4    average clarity

3  Star Act   on the improve with every start and now we get a major league jockey upgrade from a struggling one to the stoue rider/trainer combo in Stevens/Proctor........and this filly is bred well to handle the challenge of 1 1/8th turf miles at 3 in early Feb

1  Nashoba's Gold   few trainers are very good with 1st timers debuting on the turf........but Carla Gaines is...........works say go.....and this fillies pedigree is very solid not only to handle the grass but get the distance

2  Sweet As A Rose   major forward move in 2nd lifetime start in a one mile grass affair........par like effort.........good series of drills since her last and she is bred to run all day long

6  Nazareth

race 5    slightly above average clarity

5  Game On Dude   seven year old is 7 for 9 at SA with both of his losses coming in the B C Classic........he is also 7 for 10 at today's 1 1/8th distance.........that's do

3  Blueskiesnrainbows   big challenge today for this five-year-old who most likely will be hounded by Game on Dude from the get go and at equal weights.........still speed was awfully good yesterday and if the track remains the same it will enhances his chances of a major upset

4  Majestic Harbor   looks like new trainer Sean McCarthy has taught this horse to rate (or it just happened by accident) and it sure produced a good effort out of this six year old.........not impossible if fellow builds off his improved last and gets a good trip

2  American Blend

race 6    average clarity

7  Beautiful Spirit   last sure looked like the gimme off of the layoff to tighten up.......be more fit........drop and go go go this afternoon......jock upgrade to boot

5  Citizen Jane   faced significantly better (albeit on the turf) in her last and only was beaten 3 1/4 for the win despite running 8th........drops quite a bit here and might be feeling really good coming off a grass race

2  Secret Memo   as I somewhat expected this Miller four-year-old filly wanted no part of a two turn race in her last.......back to a sprint today......and back to Delgadillo who has ridden this filly well

6  Lil Cheyenne

race 7    average clarity

2  Vagabond Shoes   very solid in all four of his efforts for John Sadler when racing 1 1/8 or more on the grass........and training exceptionally well for his layoff run......and his jock Victor Espinoza is riding quite well these days and knows this runner well

6  Jeranimo   a powerful late runner at 1 1/8th on firm turf.......easily would have been top pick if this race was at 1 1/8th......1st ever attempt at 1 1/4 on the grass as the connections have avoided running this far most likely because his pedigree is not too hot to get the mini-marathon distance.......still it is hard for me not to see him being a major factor in the last 1/16th of the race

13  Temeraine   difficult post as the race starts on the hill but this Proctor five year old has never been sharper and he retains the magical Gary Stevens and drops 4 lbs from his last race which fits solidly here

1  Slim Shadey

Long-shot consideration:   3  Mr. T Bird   a little short fig wise but never trained better and he gets a jock upgrade......a couple of lbs off and a good post......if T C Baze gives him a clever ground saving trip at least to the last turn he just might upset the apple card and at a price

race 8   average clarity

3  Midnight Hawk   big maiden debut crushing win 2 back at Bhp......never easy to win at 1st asking at an extended one turn race of 7 1/2F .....then he impressed again winning a Grade 3 at SA dueling in nasty pace and still drew off in the stretch......and Smith wisely sticks with the promising three-year-old colt of Baffert's

5  Cool Samurai   very impressive in both lifetime MSW races which were at Bel and SA both of which were run at one mile.......and his work regiment since his last is very aggressive ......colt drilled 21 furlongs in a 13 day span........late runner should love the extra 1/16th today off those drills and a pedigree that screams long distance

7  Chitu  capable of brilliant early speed here.....and he works like he runs as in very fast.........my guess is Baffert will send this fellow to the front and have Smith rate our top choice some......if that does occurs this colt might go all the way

2  Diamond Bachelor

race 9    average clarity

9  Trelwany   tough post maybe but comes off a par like effort for today's level and par here looks awfully good in this weak looking bunch.....sharp drill since his latest hints that this Mullins runner has held his form

3  Proud Boss   normally stepping up from a winning nw2 $25K race to open $32K claimers in an overwhelming step up but not versus this seemingly soft group.....good post.........good a.m. work.....same rider....all should help

4  Swift Eagle   vet scratch on 23 Jan in a $50K........in for $18K less today????.........sure seems significant that Bejarano lands on the Gallagher runner.......70/30 this fellow is still in relatively good health

5  I Don't Care Who

7  Dreamcatcher

8  Diamondsdiplomat
