Santa Anita for Sunday 9 Feb 2014

Can we make it 3 straight solid Sunday's in a row?  Seems like a good enough card to make that happen. Hope the track settles down.....rail bias after the rain on Friday......slightly dull rail yesterday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Ranulf   heavy favorite continues to train well as if his health is intact......but the claiming game is tricky and there are no guarantees as to what you see is what you get........especially with a horse dropping off of a two straight easy wins......sure stands out here if he is OK and I am leaning 60/40 that he is

2  Limited Response   solid layoff run in last and the race is somewhat hidden by not the best of trips.........switch to the meets top jock...... and....... 2nd out after a layoff......might be enough to turn the tables on our top pick who beat him by 4 3/4L even if he repeats his last

1  No Contingency   seems best on conventional dirt including SA and finally gets to run on it.......and drops in claiming following an improved turf effort where he is (4 0 0 0) on it and (4 1 1 2) on conventional dirt.....seems dangerous

race 2    average clarity

5  Admission   solid wake up in last and it is disguised by a wide trip sitting close to a hot pace........did well to only get beat by 5L in a fast heat of $25K claimers........good work series since.......positive rider switch for today.......and drops one claiming notch

1  Shadow Runner   Bejarano's agent sure has done a great job of getting the rider on live mounts from a multitude of barns......lands here on a dropping O'Neill runner that has popped two sharp drills seemingly out of nowhere......dangerous drop down in claiming here

3  Graeme Crackerjack   1st two choices are drop downs....3rd choice is an improving sort who doubles his claiming price 1st out after the claim by Matt Chew............adds blinkers today and if the equipment change puts a little more ability into this runner he is not impossible

race 3    average clarity

8  Empress Of Midway   best set of drills for an O'Neill 1st starter in many a moon........and the fact that M Smith takes the mount (probably has worked the horse as well) suggests the connections mean bizz today in her MSW debut

6  Faith Hop Love   solid forward move in 2nd lifetime start and 1st on the main track......solid somewhat improved work since her last......Bejarano sticks around for a 3rd straight time

7  Sweet Profit   Sadler 1st timer has good enough drills that if she is "meant" in her 1st start she might be dangerous.......draws Kent Desormeaux who came into town a couple of weeks ago and put on quite a display

5  Shared Profit

race 4    average clarity

3  Mom Nana Petrie   3 lifetime route races (turf or dirt) are a fit here.........her 3 lifetime sprints do not......turf route today......and.......with 2 lbs less than her last......and.......the same trainer/rider which produced a par like effort in her last......and a better post than in her last

8  Smart N Dreamy   been facing better since she was claimed 5 races back and she has competed fairly well in her grass endeavors........drops to a level (no big deal as it is still above the price that she was snatched for) where she fits solidly

2  Four Better   good looking layoff turf sprint tune-up in last......finished up well in the late stages.......turf route today......has done well turf sprint to turf route in the past

1  Heat Du Jour

race 5    average clarity

1  Exotic Behavior   seems like a good claim by Simon Callagham of a Baffert horse that all 4 lifetime sprint races (turf/AW/dirt) fit well here.....3 route races do not.....6F today and they get the meets top jock to ride

7  E Equalsmcsquared   8 lifetime races........3 on which were run conventional dirt....those 3 races were the 3 best of her career and they fit well at today's level of racing

6  Time For Angie   very sharp right now and deservedly steps up a couple of notches to avoid the claiming vultures .......does lose Bejarano who goes to our top choice........but gets a very competent rider in Desormeaux

5  Mia's Storm

race 6    average clarity

10  Nickels Wild   liked this filly quite a bit as a long-shot (52 t0 1) play in her last in a Grade 3 and she gave us a thrill till late stretch finishing a close know I like her here versus nw alw foes running at the same 1 1/8th mile distance

4  Clear Path   it has been like clockwork.......when Callaghan uses a lower level jock 1st run with a Euro import it is a tune-up......and when he switches to a top jock echelon rider it is a full throttle go......Prat to Bejarano..... GO

3  Passionate Diva   four year old filly has done little wrong in all 7 lifetime route races.....and today's 1 1/8th distance is a good fit......and she owns a nice reliable stalking style

11  Scooter Bird

Long-shot consideration:   7 Love Tale   good improvement 2nd out after the Cerin claim and the race was at today's distance and surface.......nine pounds lighter today with the rise in class and the 7lbs. apprentice alw......that much weight off is very dangerous with a deep closer

race 7    slightly below average clarity

1  Road Ready   seems best on conventional dirt......nice runner very early in his career........has run well fresh in the since Feb. but he is training like a Stakes horse.......whatever ailed him the last couple of years doesn't seem to be a factor now.....that is if his works mean a hoot

2  Omega Star   nice rebound in form with the blinkers added in last.........and he seems to appreciate sprinting on the Santa Anita surface.......6 panels today

3  Chief Lion   lead type only is extremely fast and if he discourages the other two speed horses in (4 & 9) and they peel away early he will be tough

7  Camp Victory

race 8    slightly above average clarity

6  Purim's Dancer   loves the SA hill (7 4 0 2) and faces the softest group she has seen in quite awhile.....ultra reliable Proctor/Stevens at the helm

2  Sky High Gal   consistent sort and she looks like the controlling speed in this spot....that is a dangerous proposition down the Santa Anita hill turf course

1  Birdlover   perfect rail trip in last by M Smith for an upset my guess is he will attempt the same journey today with his one post draw......not impossible here if the hole opens up once again

5  Miss Lucky Sevens

race 9    slightly below average clarity

10  Apache Ambush   all three lifetime main track races fit well recent reassuring drill.....barn means business on the drop

1  Old Pueblo   par like effort in last......1st after the claim and his trainer Melody Colon has a good history 1st out after she takes a horse thru claiming..........and we get a major rider upgrade

3  Rapit   dangerous looking 1st time starter.....might have rated higher if it wasn't for the dismal 4% win percentage for his rider who I have liked quite a bit until lately .......he has gotten fairly decent mounts at the meeting for a 4% win percentage

11  Blue Cherokee

6  Tribal Law

12  Atascaderan
