Santa Anita for Monday 17 Feb 2014

Slightly abbreviated comments today as I have limited time with the extra day of racing and as many of you know I never (well maybe almost never) short change the amount study time for a given card. Be back with you on Thursday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly below average clarity

6  Kafister   red hot trainer.......last was solid pace and final time........ step up in claiming is a good sign he exited his last in good shape

3  Key Board Courage   invader can handle a route and loves 6 1/2F......so 7F likely will be a good thing......well placed at $25K to win......Miller means business

5  Dress Code   late runner might be flying in the stretch if the 1 - 2 - 6 put the heat on one another in the early stages

race 2    average clarity

4  Garen   has an abundance of early speed as he showed in his last dueling in one very nasty pace .....bred to handle his 1st ever route......should be loose and if so can wire if he rates to some extent

5  Big Tire   shocking 2nd at 35 to 1 in last 1st on the dirt........same distance and rider and trainer........sharp works......repeat seems likely

3  Dublin  Up   solid forward move in 2nd lifetime start with the blinkers added........bred well to handle his 1st route.........fits fine if moves forward once more

race 3    average clarity

2  Tasha's Courage   on the right end of the learning curve.........and.........last sure fits and especially with a rider upgrade for today

7  Bench Press   strong drills since his last and yet drops to the bottom mc level......hmmmmm.......ultra dangerous if he is still healthy but be careful as Sadler tends to give nothing away

4  Ice Cream Truck   can finish with some run at 6 1/2 furlongs when many in here will be gassed

5  High On Final

race 4    average clarity

3  Jet Warrior   won his debut on the AW quite easily......won 2nd start on the turf quite easily.......going for the surface trifecta today in 3rd lifetime start which is on conventional dirt.....hint: works big on it

5 Toledo Eddie   big races last two times sprinting in one turn fast track sprints.......and it is more likely to have the earth shake than get rain in S. Cal these days

4  Memphis   ran 2nd to a horse that would hand these guys their lunch in his latest.......but does like to hang especially past 6 1/2F or I would have rated higher

2  Turn On The Brites

race 5    average clarity

3  Beverly The Boss   did extremely well to hang on for 3rd in last......blistering pace on a slightly dull inside......bred very nicely for the grass........should be tough

5  Abide in Me    ran fine in only turf race.........just went too fast early for a route........seems better suited to sprinting........likely to feel good with Bejarano and his agent opting to ride for the 1st time

9  Dancinginthestreet   another who showed he can handle the grass but likely needs to sprint to compete for the win......6 1/2F today should put him in the hunt

10  La Sorella

race 6    slightly below average clarity

8  Alice Roadtrain   prolonged tightly spaced work regiment suggests this Miller mc 1ster is ready to roll.....and Miller wins with mdn claiming 1st timers about a 1/4 of the time

5  Ipolita   like just about everything else in the Ellis barn this filly moved forward in her latest.......and worked very solidly since so smartly steps up......should be tough here

2  Hearitforthegirls    Sadler is an outstanding 15 of his last 45 with maiden claiming 1st timers........and the works say this filly is likely ready

9  Warrenspoweroflove

race 7    average clarity

4  Tapicat   seems best at one mile.......has learned to rate which is a big plus.......Mott and Velasquez wouldn't fly x-Country without one very sharp filly which the drills support

2  Egg Drop   hard to argue with 4 wins and a 2nd in 5 lifetime starts on the sod 4 of which were Graded races

1  Miss Serendipity   ARG invader needed last and last (on the dirt) wasn't bad.........big Grade 1 victory winning by 4L last time this mare saw the turf in Argentina

7  Ponchatrain

Long-shot consideration:   8  Unusaul Hottie   best by far racing at one mile on the sod........will need a clever ground saving trip........that would go a long way at making up for the inferior 2 or 3 lengths that she is versus the top gals here

race 8    slightly above average clarity

3  Rovenna    has leaped forward ability wise since the blinkers were added 2 back.........amazing 3rd in last as she was close to too a hot pace and 3 wide thru-out........seems tough here even if she fires 80% of what she is capable of

2  Meinertzhageni   jury is still out on her ability to handle conventional dirt.....but she might have an excuse for her two bad races on it as both were 2 turn races......one sprint and one route.....we shall see today in  a one turn sprint

4  Wonderful Lie   decent MSW breaking win at 1st asking......will need more today and might give with a race under her belt

5  Casey's Clem

race 9    average clarity

2  Carbonite   last (and at 6 1/2F down the hill like today) was a nice rebound in form which wasn't that bad anyway.......the race was run when Sadler was "cold".....not cold now.......and the old timer (horse not Sadler) has had ample time to recover

7  Candy's Sunrise   seems like a decent claim by Belvoir and he makes a significant change in riders especially considering this is on the SA hill turf course

9  Big Note   two straight solid turf sprints with the blinkers off and the latest was at SA.........needs to avoid a speed duel with our 4th pick......my guess it will be full throttle from the opening bell

3  Shame On Alex

11  Dixieland Blues

8  Depreciable
