Santa Anita for Friday 28 February 2014

Very much an off surface this afternoon and in all likelihood tomorrow will be as well. At least the turf course is getting a good trenching which it needed badly.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Runaway Que   only fellow in the field who is a "true" distance runner.......small field should make for a good trip.......sharp reassuring work since his latest.......hard to see him not being very competitive here unless he dislikes an off track

1  Clouds Clearing   lone win for this Pederson runner was the lone time up for a tag.......up for sale again today.......often connections love to repeat themselves........so likely very ready for today.........and gets a good spot.........as in small field and so so competition

2  Cajun Hippie   nowheresville since winning maiden claiming debut.........just like our 2nd choice he is up for a tag for the 1st time since winning his maiden claiming  debut.......recent drills are somewhat improved

race 2    average clarity  (picks are for the dirt)

(extra pick because of anticipated scratches)

4  Volkonsky   seems like the switch to the main track is a plus as this Hollendorfer charge just ran his lifetime best on it in his last.......sharp drill since says he has held form......last effort/fig sure fits.............slop is a question mark

2  Sizzlin' Joe   red hot trainer Jones has this five-year-old gelding sharp right now and the way his barn has been going it is hard to imagine this fellow not putting in a solid effort if he handles the off going..............decent breeding for it

5  Christopher Street   very consistent sort won his only race running at 1 1/8th on the turf........that bodes well for his chances here if of course he handles the off track........his pedigree for it seems somewhere between average and good

8  Bench Light

1  Woodmans Luck

race 3    slightly below average clarity

3  Empress of Midway   fairly decent MSW debut beaten by 5 3/4L (running 3rd) for the win but it was a fast heat.......and I like her pedigree to handle an off track.......Mike Smith after being red hot in S Cal has been ice cold the last couple of weeks......good time to turn things around here

1  Zensational Beauty   seemingly the best early speed in the field and that often is a dangerous commodity on an off track......might be loose and if so the rider and horse won't be battered with a contrail of mud

4  Katerrific   1st timer is working as if she is ready to roll ........very good sign Bejarano is up for a barn he seldom rides for.......and owns a good pedigree for an off track

race 4    below average clarity  (picks are for the dirt)

(extra pick because of anticipated scratches)

4  Tavern Law   prolonged work tab for this Hess 1st timer and a couple of sharp tighten the screws 4F drills to finish it off suggests this fellow is meant and ready........now he just has to handle the off track

7  Stake Hunter   serious forward move in latest in his 2nd lifetime start in a turf route........3 decent drills since..........average slop pedigree........should finish well coming off a grass route and cutting back in distance if of course he handles the off going

5  Heat Flash   just fired best lifetime route turf race and I believe he is best sprinting..........now he just needs to handle an off track which is the theme for almost everyone racing today

8  Gospel Music

2  Tizapalooza

race 5    slightly above average clarity

5  Giannonatti  deep closer should have little traffic to cope in this small sprint field and she faces as a weak a group as she has ever seen

1  Smil'n From Above   sure likes to hang but this six-year-old mare fired her lifetime best the only time she ran on an off track and it was at SA......and she seems to respond to the bug boy's handling who is back up today after being absent for 2 races

3  J Louie   best speed in the race seemingly will be dangerous if she shakes free on the off going......how are the lead runners doing to this point?

race 6    average clarity

4  Belle of the Fleet   both lifetime sprint races are solid here.........laid up since September but owns a strong tightly spaced series of drills that spell.........r   e  a  d  y.......and an OK pedigree for an off track

5  Midnight Dream  after two failures as the fave in her 1st couple of lifetime races Baffert took the blinkers off in her 3rd lifetime start and the equipment change did the trick running from off the pace for the 1st time and winning......and she owns better than average breeding to handle an off track

1  D'ya Knowwhatimean   O'neill might have lost a good one via claiming to Miller as this filly crushed her competition in both lifetime races on the main track.....last fits and if Miller gets more out of her she would be the one to beat......OK off track pedigree

race 7    average clarity   (picks are for the dirt)

(extra pick because of anticipated scratches)

5  I'msoulflattering   funky looking debut breaking a little slow and racing far back well off of the rail while alone?......... closed well from far back in what looked like a sprint tune-up for today's distance race.......solid looking series of 4 works since.......OK pedigree for the off going....should be a price

1  Betty Bling Bling   not much in last on the sod in last but I don't think she is bred that well for the grass.....back to the SA main track which she handled on a fast surface........and I like the breeding to handle the off.........on mom's side of the family

2  A Little Luckier   seems ready 2nd out after the long layoff and the trainer has had a good meeting.....but I am somewhat leery of her ability to handle an off track.......fits as well as anybody in here if she does handle the off

6  Turn On

3  Veronica Bay

race 8    average clarity

12  Amina Perfect   last man (woman) standing scenario here........one bad bunch here but at last this filly can finish with some run if of course she handles the off conditions

11  Classic Candy   laid up since late September but owns dangerous early speed in this spot.....bred decently for an off track........sure seems dangerous if she is fit enough to preform at a high level fresh of off the bench

8  Rich in Tradition   likes SA......likes the abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs........slop is a ? mark as it is for almost everybody today...........but maybe a more important ? mark is her ability to comprehend that she is supposed to pass the last horse in front of her

3  Exemplary

9  Wine Country Wands

5  Notbyemyrules
