Santa Anita for Friday 21 March 2014

Don't miss out at saving a few dollars ( $4 to be exact) on our special full card selections for Ky Derby day by signing up early. Or save $20 on a great package of 4 special pubs we offer this year. We are calling it Rich Santucci's top 4 race days.

OK card today. On the 1 to 10 scale I'd call it a 5 1/2.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Magic Spot   "hello turf"......that is what the connections were likely saying following the solid 1st ever run on the sod in last.......nice work series since her last.......same good post as last.....retains top jock and gets in with significant less weight

3  Krazypapaya   toss out dull run in last as this five-year-old mare seems to prefer ample time between starts which she gets today (2+ months) ........race run 3 back is quite strong (off of 2+ months rest) and it was run at 1 1/16th on the grass.......she seems at her best at today's 1 mile distance

6  Tanquerray   4 for 9 at today's distance on one mile on the sod.......0 for 5 at other distances on the sod.......and sure responds when today's jock Corey Nakatani is aboard (3 2 0 1)......seems "live" today

race 2    average clarity

1  Sugar Spice   claim steps up a notch for Mulhall who sure could use a win (her 1st win)........seems like her new runner has a shot at getting what she needs which is loose on a lead....(4 3 1 0) when opens up a one length lead or more......speed (rail) was good yesterday

3  Addendum   consistent sort just got snatched at the claiming box by a capable trainer in Dean Pederson.......his new mare smartly steps up one level off of an impressive 3 1/4L win......seems best on the conventional dirt at Santa Anita running 6 1/2F or less......6F today at SA

2  Clearly Confused   very consistent racing at SA with only one dull race in 6 attempts on the main track......just claimed by high % trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and he gets Bejarano to ride which hints his new filly is doing well

race 3    average clarity

3  Autumn View   let's call it her turn (similar to top choice winner Rangi yesterday) ......mare has been beaten down the hill by no more than 3/4's of a length in her last two races and beaten by next out winners.....and Bejarano sure likes this runner as he sticks with her for a 6th straight time

4  Provenance   last doesn't fit but race two back does.......red hot trainer in Jones.....and a bug boy that rides the SA hill like a successful veteran....blinkers off and good works...usually a very good sign

5  Not too Shiny   being ready to roll with 1st time starters isn't Kruljac's forte but mom has tossed 4 grass winners and the works seem semi-dangerous

race 4    average clarity

2  E Equalsmcsquared   last wasn't much but her other 3 lifetime races on conventional dirt are solid including her effort 2 back which was at SA and at today's 6 1/2F distance.....good recent drills.....and plenty of speed to flatter her late running style

5  Among the Stars   won nicely 1st out after the claim by Sadler in latest......works prior to the race were impressive and they remain impressive since the race.......same or better seems likely today

4  Jetbird   blocked badly in last or would have won for fun instead of having to graduate by disqualification......rated in her last and that style ought to come in handy here in this race loaded with speed

7  Full's Dress Code

race 5    average clarity

3  Bettys Bambino   very fast MSW debut win on the standing water slop......might have loved the condition but if that wasn't the case this Eurton charge might be real solid here in his 1st on the grass which he is adequately bred for.....very reassuring bullet 3F work since his debut win

1  Jet Warrior   done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts which he ran on 3 different races surfaces..........he won on the grass and AW and ran 2nd on the "real" dirt.......stellar works since his last

6  Collation   career best was his lone race down the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course and the effort is hidden by a poor trip.......trainer does quite well with limited starters

4  Back to Bako

race 6    average clarity

7  Road Ready   Bonde runner obviously has seen better days but he might be able to win this race on 3 1/2 legs as this bottom level 8K claimer sure has come up weak.......trainer has won which 1/3rd of his last 3 dozen multiple level drop downs

1  Xuang Feng   another taking a major class plunge......this one seems to be a bit more of an alarming drop........but still........a "flip a coin" proposition as far as his health is concerned

8  Always the Same   common sort of late for the 8K level might be up to a necessary 2 or 3 lengths of improvement with a trainer switch to Jose Avalos who has won with 5 of his last 16 1st out after he takes over the training duties of a given horse

4  Truelee Scrappin

race 7    slightly below clarity

4  Deep Play  since Vienna put the blinkers on this distance running gelding he just just keeps getting better.............and better..............and better .................and better...........and...............

8  Perfect Set   extremely hidden potential.......Gary Mandella runner seemingly is in good form and he has the credentials to appreciate the 1 1/4 miles distance........best pedigree in this field for it......and........in Feb of 2013 he ran a very strong effort at 1 1/8th at three which is like going a 1 1/4 at four...... and the race is disguised by a bad trip.....lost about 9L of trip trouble and only lost by 2 1/4L.....Prat up that day......Smith up today

2  Boyett   should be on or near the lead and seems very ratable.......great riding by Bejarano in multiple mounts on this Glatt runner (not too shabby of training either)..........my guess is our top choice will let him go and stalk him.....if that occurs it should enhance both their chances

3  Woodman's Luck

race 8    average clarity

(only an 8 horse field so one less horse given for the super high five race)

1  Charbroiled   races lacks speed and not only does this four-year-old gelding own some speed but he has a good gate rider up to help overcome a tough post to break from

6  Jimrony   Ron Ellis isn't much with 1st timers starters but the works are rather decent and this 1st timer is a five-year-old......and it is a little different situation with a debut runner starting his career so late

4  Destino   career maiden is facing his 33rd career start but he never ran better than his last where he ran wide on an good inside condition and still managed to finish up smartly.......not sure if he can repeat the effort but if he does.....lookout

2  Ice Cream Truck

8  Slight Edge
