Santa Anita for Saturday 22 March 2014

Don't miss out at saving a few dollars ( $4 to be exact) on our special full card selections for Ky Derby day by signing up early. Or save $20 on a great package of 4 special pubs we offer this year. We are calling it Rich Santucci's top 4 race days.

Seems like a decent card today and that is especially nice being that it is Saturday. On the 1 to 10 scale I'd call it an 6 1/2.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Gnarly Dude   last time Mulhall dropped this gelding precipitously was way back on May 4th 2013 and he won for fun.......and the trainer has had a tough win-less SA meeting to date......time to stop worrying about losing a horse and win........gelding should get a nice mid pace ground saving trip behind plenty of speed

3  Muchos Besos   another off pace runner who should benefit from numerous "lead type only"s in the race........very consistent sort comes back at the same price 1st out following the Craig Lewis claim

4  Peacenik   bad spot for speed and that is what this seven year old is all about.......but Smith takes the mount of a fairly cheap claimer so Peacenik is likely feeling quite well.......will be interesting to see what tactics Smith/Spawr take with the claimer

2  Gal Has to Like It

race 2    average clarity

4  La Sorella   both lifetime grass races fit decently but maybe more importantly this Jones/Smith runner appears to be a the controlling speed in this field of seven........that is a dangerous propostion

1  Sweet as a Rose   three year old filly is coming off of a par like 1 1/8th turf race so she likely has built up her endurance and she will have plenty left in the tank come crunch time

5  Nazereth   coming off the same 1 1/8th grass race as our 2nd choice so her endurance ought to be stout as well........and she ran well in her debut down the SA hill turf course in her MSW debut 2 races back

6  La Pequena Gigi

race 3    above average clarity

4  We Have Lift Off   exits an extremely fast heat  on Feb 23rd where the other division of mdn2oK runners was run 1oL slower........good works since.......rider upgrade..........looks likely to be loose on the lead once again......normally I would be more concerned that this fellow remains in a bottom level claimer..........but........he started his career 6 days short on being a 5 year old (3 races back)

3  Street Maven   exits the same fast for class race as our top pick and beat him by a length.......2nd choice mainly because I am more leery about this mdn20K runner staying at the bottom mc level instead of steping up a notch or two.....and he is not working as well as our top choice

1  Roman Tizzy   just missed in the slow heat on Feb 23rd.......obviously will need better today and/or our top two choices to head south this afternoon one way or another

6  Satch

race 4   slightly above average clarity

1  Vagabond Shoes   Sadler has been on a roll following a slow start at the SA meeting.....and here Sadler has one sharp seven year old gelding.......consistent having fired in 6 straight races that fit very well here

5  Temeraine   seems best at the 12 furlong marathon turf distance.........also seems best on very firm turf and of course gets it.........deadly team of Proctor/Stevens

3  Lucayan   rather consistent sort has yet to beat our top pick in 3 efforts against him but he was closing strongly and gaining ground in all 3 races versus the "Vagabond"

race 5    average clarity

6  Gameboy Luke   nice forward move in last 1st time with Maldonado aboard......blinkers on and already rather quick early.......great chance to be the controlling speed and with an outstanding gate jock up when he is sharp and he is sharp now after a sluggish start

4  Midnight Storm   Gutierrez is not known for his prowess with 1st timers but most his 1sters don't train as well as this nicely bred 1st timer has........seems very dangerous

3  Louden's Gray   prolonged work tab with copious furlongs put into this Mulhall 1st starter......speed and endurance has been put into this colt which hints the barn means business in his MSW debut

7  Twenty Percent

race 6    average clarity

8  Stormy Fleece   plenty of speed in this affair can help Espinoza maneuver his way over by turn one which comes up pretty quick.......five year old gelding is sharpened since Sadler claimed him back after losing him for one race ......mid pack runner seeming gets plenty of heat up front to flatter his stretch drive

2  Willyconker   sure didn't like this horse running on the dirt in his last especially in a Grade 2 as his pedigree for it is bad......back where belongs on the green carpet.......race 2 back fits where he won his only grass race run other than today's at the distance where he is 7 for 18 seems like a plus

3  Mega Heat   loves the distance and has a great chance to stalk a fast pace behind the 6 and the 7 who seem likely to battle it out early.......his chances sure are enhanced if that scenario comes to fruition

5  El Commodore

race 7    average clarity

2  Big Wags   very wide trip especially in last on a slightly biased inside.......adjusted for trouble fig is about 4L better than par......might be able to get a nice mid pack position behind a fairly lively pace.......East coast trainer trying to break into the tough S Cal circuit needs a win and drops here to get one......speak of breaking in......on Jan 17th I wrote about the alw horse Rangi and the comment included "just claimed by one sharp Midwest outfit in Panic Stable"........well.......Panic Stable won 2 races (Richard Baltas) Thursday and they won their last two starts at Gulfstream (and with Rosario up which suggests the horse's were well prepared). And all four basically crushed the competition. Just helping out your knowledge of what I know and you might not being that I am a Midwest boy.

11  Paseo Alegro    seems like a timely claim by Vann Belvoir of a speed type (when running two turns) who is a sharp seven year old right now........gelding owns a record of (24 7 7 4) on conventional dirt

9  Joe Carl   not what he used to be but drops a couple of levels for Carava who is good 2nd out after a claim like today.......might be a lively pace.....should be motoring late if that occurs

7  Anabaa Premium

race 8    slightly above average clarity

4  Diamond Bachelor   back to the grass where this speed type has done little wrong in 3 lifetime work tab in preparation for his return to his favored surface........race lacks speed and he owns plenty.....seems highly likely to be the controlling speed here and with Mike Smith up

1  Enterprising  on the right end of the learning curve and appears to like the one mile distance......retains Stevens who knows this Proctor colt well having ridden him 4 times.....should sit in a nice ground saving stalk position

5  Quotient   crushed in last to break his maiden.....sold privately......ends up in the hot Sadler barn.....should have plenty left for the stretch run here coming running off of a 1 1/8th grass race

8  Royal Banker

race 9    slightly below average clarity

8 Joint Attempt    filly has run two decent (not great) efforts at a route following the John Sadler claim......sure like the route/route/7F scenario especially for a runner that showed improved sped in last ans since put in a speed building 4F work of 48:1H

4  It's Aine  2nd out after the layoff and owns a touch of speed in a race lacking what Maldonado wants........the jump on the field and nobody is breaking out of the gate as well as he is right now

6  Lil Cheyenne   last 3 races fit and his last is disguised by a bad start.......broke a length slow and then checked hard 3 more.....ran well from there........jock will be out to make amends

7  Corinthian Melody

9  Brandon Princess

3  Gloryandprayer
