Santa Anita for Friday 28 March 2014

Don't miss out at saving a few dollars ( $4 to be exact) on our special full card selections for Kentucky Derby day by signing up early. Or save $20 on a great package of 4 special pubs we are offering this year. We are calling it Rich Santucci's top 4 race days.

Average clarity ratings in every race today makes for a 6 on the 1 to 10 scale. Both Saturday's and Sunday's cards at first glance look at least that or better.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Mank   improving with each and every start both in final time and early speed.....that is a dangerous proposition especially for a conditioner like John Shirreffs who seldom rushes his young stock

3  Grand Humor   Palma is hot seemingly out of nowhere........last two races are solid for this Palma runner......and.......his last race is well hidden in that he was caught wide dueling a strong set of fractions......wide with pace is this handicapper's favorite disguised kind of runner in S Cal as it seems to be one of the few troubled trips that gets under-bet instead of over-bet as most bad trips do at SA and Dmr

5  Scarly Charly   sharp preparatory near bullet 4F drill 6 days ago...........arguably best ever was this Janet Armstrong's lone race sprinting on conventional dirt rated fast.......and the race was his lifetime debut and with Mojica up.....experienced runner now and Stevens up......that's surely worth a few lengths

race 2    average clarity

5  Image of Joplin   bit too ambitious in last his 1st out following the Myadi claim.........back to a more realistic level......impressive (especially for today's level of racing) 5F bullet work since his last.......trainer is solid 2nd out after a claim

2  Johnny Reb   2 of last 3 racing endeavors fit fine trainer today in Peter Eurton...........1st on conventional dirt seems to be the question mark.........OK pedigree for it

6  Reps and Warrants   talk about disliking a route.....up the track in both lifetime route races.......back to a sprint this afternoon and I believe 6F will be a better fit than 7F where this O'Neill runner has flattened out some

4  Cousin Ricky

race 3    average clarity

4  Depreciable   nice turf sprint down the hill in latest.....closed fast from too far back.......did well to only get beat by 1 3/4L....that race sets him up well for today's one mile grass affair.........good trainer of grass runners in Jeff Mullins

6  Bench Light   good history with 6 to 9 weeks between races and gets it.........last two races fit OK but what we want is his effort 3 back which would make him difficult to overcome.......Salder wanted (and very likely claimed him for) yesterday's optional claiming state-bred nw alw race yesterday but failed to get in

8  Timeless Indy   GP invader seems placed to win and well guess is he has enough early speed (especially with the addition of blinkers and getting in light with the good turf riding bug boy up) to clear the field by the turn.......and if he does he might go.........................all..........................the........................way

2  Johnny's Choice

race 4    average clarity

1  This Cat's Awesome   4% trainer in 2013/14 but 15% win (62% in the money) 1st time maiden claiming for Sherlock.......4 of 5 lifetime efforts fit well here

7  Seeking Asylum   all five lifetime races at SA fit well.......rather amazing he hasn't been able to graduate in at least one of those races.....but he has caught some solid foes......continues to train like a healthy sort and retains Bejarano

3  Mason   definitely training well enough to be ready to roll in his maiden debut and his trainer Blake Heap does slightly above average with mc seem good enough that I doubt this is a gimme or the trainer would have used a MSW race as a tune-up

4  Uncle Luck

Long-shot consideration:    5  In Excessiveness    showed little in two lifetime starts last summer at Dmr.......but returning as a 1st time gelding and with a stout set of drills........and the works are on the conventional dirt at SA........more sure seems very likely this much more is the ? mark

race 5    average clarity

4  Swift Eagle   just snatched at the claiming box by Sadler and he smartly steps up his newbie off of a very strong effort in his last........and the effort is well disguised (wide near the pace setters - not good)........reassuring series of 4 works since

2  Trelawny   could have been 3 for 4 at today's turf distance if he wasn't DQ'ed on 21 Aug 13.....deservedly steps up a notch off of the claim....and .....Yakteen wisely puts Baze up as he is 2 for 2 on this consistent seven-year-old gelding

6  Magic Channel   another consistent sort and horse's that fire almost every start are especially stout in high % barns like Hollendorfer's.........and this fellow might be at his very best at today's 1 mile distance

7  Causeithertz

race 6    average clarity

3  Summer Sea    lone race run way back in May of 2013 was decent........sure is training as if he is ready fresh once again and this time he will be ridden by a top jock instead of a no name apprentice......Maldonado should put him in the mix from the get go

9  Shark's Cup   gelding has more ability than his two running lines would indicate.........and Kayla Stra is not exactly Koriner's top jock.......Talamo often has been thru the year's and he is up it might be gimme / gimme / drop a little......and go go go

5  Chattering Class   my guess is the alw race and two MSW races/efforts in New Mexico fit fine at today's mnd30K level........1st time with Miller and his top go to jock at the SA meeting has been Espinoza who has won 7 of his last 20 mounts for the trainer

7  Good Samurai

race 7   average clarity

5  Karma King   believe this Dollase runner has shown he is better suited to sprinting......and he is likely to take to the grass in his 1st endeavor on it as he owns a good pedigree for it......lone win was in MSW I doubt the 3 1/2 month break in the action will be a hindrance

6  Pathway to Yes   on the improve with every start and retains the hot bug boy who sure has done well down the SA hill grass course.........Dan Blacker three-year-old seems likely to be in the race from the get go

2  Fort Wagner   hellooooo turf.......solid move forward in his last which was his 1st ever on the turf........cuts back to a turf sprint from a one mile grass race........and he is 1 for 1 sprinting on the main track when wearing blinkers.......retains hot jock in Maldonado who has been especially solid with his hill mounts the last couple of weeks

8  Number Five

race 8    average clarity

1  Jovita's Tuffy   all four lifetime sprint races are stout for today's level including his only race on the SA dirt.......mid pack runner should come flying down the stretch if this drop down has remained in relatively good health

2  My Jealous   very solid quite (a bit better than par for today's level of racing) figs in 3 of 4 lifetime races on the main track........and retains Bejarano off of the claim and wisely so as he has looked good aboard this ex-Bonde general I have never seen Bejarano ride better in S Cal than he has at this meeting

10  Topper's Ghost   dynamite efforts/figs in the three races run on the SA main track when it has been rated "fast"........T C Baze will need a clever ride to get on over and at least find the 2 path by the turn or it likely will be costly

9  Nome

3  D' Obesssion

8  Justa Gusta
