Santa Anita for Sunday 30 March 2014

Don't miss out at saving a few dollars ( $4 to be exact) on our special full card selections for Kentucky Derby day by signing up early. Or save $20 on a great package of 4 special pubs we are offering this year. We are calling it Rich Santucci's top 4 race days.

Rather cheap levels of racing today for a Sunday but fairly interesting handicapping wise and wagering wise.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Kafister   very solid races in last two outings......doubt he would lose repeating either of those races.........and he was claimed by one sharp trainer.......but I am a bit concerned by his 45:4 drill......followed 12 days later by an extremely slow work.......and drops........might have been beat up some by that nasty (too fast?) work.....MIGHT have been.......so still top pick

1  Limited Response   50K down to 40K down to 32K down to 25K down to 20K today.....not exactly encouraging running lines.....but his last at 25K is good and is hidden by a wide trip on strong rail day.......should be motoring late

2  My Best Bet   8K to 20K is quite the jump in class but this fellow has some strong back numbers.......and his last was off of a long hiatus from racing.......sharp drill for his new trainer......expecting much more today.......how much more is the ? mark

race 2    slightly below average clarity

4  South Sound   done little wrong in 3 lifetime races on the conventional dirt at SA.........faces a softer field than she has in her last 3 races which are all decent 2nd's.........her turn today?

6  La Casadora   significant wake-up in latest......plenty of rest and an improved series of 5 drills steadily getting better........seems poised for at least her last and probably better

3  Senza Fina      cut back of one half furlong appears to be a plus.........so does small drop.....fits fine if she is up to her best

race 3    average clarity

5  Newfound Gold    whole career fits (at the distance of 6F) here.......claimed by Yakteen and he brings his newbie back at the same level........last was quite strong both in pace and final time and today we get a rider upgrade.......who won 3 Saturday

2  She Digs Me   race two back is a good fit here........toss out last as he was caught wide chasing a nasty set of fractions.......and it was on an off track which he had already shown a dislike for in the past.....rebound city today

1  Change of Plan   good history when wearing blinkers and running on conventional dirt........claimed in last and O'Neill wisely leaves them on.......jock sure could use a win for O'Neill as he has gotten quite a few mounts for his barn and done little with them.....patience running thin?

3  Carbonite

race 4    average clarity

3  Life's Journey   5 lifetime grass races and only two of them fit here.......the two that he ran at today's distance of 1 1/8th on the grass..........last at 1 1/8th fits some........but his other 1 1/8th race was impressive only getting beat by 1/2L despite a brutal trip..........and he owns a vastly improved work series since his last......should be motoring late when many will be tiring

4  Tommy's Stylin   very good sprint MSW debut down the hill......bad trip and almost won.........would have easily been top pick if this grass race was less than 1 1/8th.......his pedigree is very unproven for the distance being by a new ($4K fee) sire........still...........very dangerous

6  Pantera Rojo   proven grass runner is steadily improving and runs as if another furlong of lawn to cover will be a plus....should be sitting up close early in good position behind our 4th choice and maybe one other

7  Kozani

race 5   slightly below average clarity

3  Dream Baby  believe this filly can grab a loose lead if she breaks cleanly......in her lone race at SA she broke slow by a couple of lengths and still managed to wire.........hot app up and if he gets the lead he will be tough to catch with his weight advantage

5  Holiday N Newport   cut back in sprint distance appears to be a good thing as this filly flattens out a little running further than today's 6F distance........would have been top pick if the trainer wasn't cooling down after doing no wrong

2  Firendesire   best surface: Santa Anita dirt.....best distance: six panels.....best jockey success: Maldonado.........gets all three today

7  Tiz Vegas

race 6   average clarity

4  Rob's Pal   sharp dirt form is encouraging......screaming for a rare maiden claimer of $50,000 on the sod and gets one......consistent but a few lengths short of what it takes to win a MSW race........not here though

2  Big Medicine Man   colt has the best credentials in the race but the trainer is in a funk these days and is still looking for his 2nd win at the meeting....might get it here

5  Street Maven   last was poor......but previous 3 races are not including a couple on the sod.......seems like a good sign that Bejarano takes the mount......fits well if rebounds

1  Fourth Generation    105 lbs on her back.....yikes

race 7    average clarity

5  Fury Kapcori   big race 2 back and even a better race in last......dueled in suicide pace and yet held on for the win.........plenty of rest to recover from such a stressful run.....horse has a ton of talent and I believe some day in the future if he remains healthy will be a top level Graded Stakes star

7  Clubhouse Ride   rounding into top form and his top form fits well here.......should be flying late with ample pace in this race to flatter his late run

2  Appealing Tale   loves the distance of one mile on the Santa Anita dirt (4 3 0 1)........Miller charge most likely will need to avoid a duel with our top pick one way or another

4  Cat Burglar

race 8    average clarity

1  Monastic   blinkers on/improved work........Stevens/Proctor........draws a better post for a one mile turf affair.......seems like a given we will see one of this gelding's best efforts to date this afternoon

6  Power Ped   last two fit extremely well.......so why not top choice?........gelding has yet to run 3 straight solid races in a row and his recent a.m. work is a little soft......still........a world class trainer and rider at the controls to break the trend

5  Spring Up    good history back in short rest and that is the case here......and his latest is rather strong.......good rider/trainer team of late.....and a good week for Sadler with his grass runners

7  Hear The Ghost

Long-shot consideration:   2  Irish surf   jockey seems to be awakening from the doldrums.....and the colt should welcome not having to face Grade 2 or Grade 1 competition where he was running way over his head....might come flying late if this mile turf affair is run in a legit pace

race 9    slightly above average clarity

5  Rockin Cowgirl   invader from Tup is well placed to win and is made to order for an abbreviated sprint of 5F........sharp reassuring speed works say that this filly is well prepared........meant......... and ready

2  Sweet Heat   very strong work tab for a mdn claiming 20K......only cost $6K at sale so why not enter for $20K....and the trainer Kristin Mulhall is better than average with mc 1sters

3  Puttybadshark   one year away but training sharply and drops a couple of maiden levels.....blinkers on and sure is training as though the equipment change has increased his early speed.......5F here

10  Nueva Fortuna

4  Mayie

9  Swiss Peak
