Santa Anita for Saturday 19 April 2014

Decent card today and a very decent card Sunday from what I have seen so far. I would rate today's card a 6 1/2 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Candy for Debbie   gelding knows how to win races........ N Cal trainer has done well with limited starters at SA.........wide trip on a decent inside track hides this runner's last......seems likely to get a good trip this time on or near the front end

5  Valley Cat   best late runner in the field reunites with Bejarano who has teamed up very well in the past with this Peter Eurton seven-year-old

2  Half Strike   blinkers on in latest woke this gelding up some.......seems best at SA........also seems at his best when up close in the early stages which looks likely here

race 2    slightly above average clarity

5  Boozer   sure appears to be a mismatch in ability here.........four-year-old gelding beat better in last and beat better by 2 3/4 lengths in a race down the SA hill turf course........solid shot to make it 3 for 3 on the "hill" today

2  Valdirone   came up short in last and had the right to coming off of a 13 1/2 month hiatus from the track.......proven on the grass just missing at 6F at Bhp versus open company in Dec of 2012......fits today on the hill if he benefited from his latest and the 5 horse falls off some

1  Love Rules   new trainer Paul Aguirre takes over this colt who ran a strong winning MSW race at GG on the synthetic.......owns a decent grass pedigree....not impossible if he takes to the hill and moves forward for the 2nd straight time in his young career

4  Luz Atticus

race 3    above average clarity

1  Yahilwa   Cassidy four-year-old filly was only beaten by 5L and 4L versus vastly better in her last two starts.......fig/effort wise those two races would crush today's 5/8th's bullet drill last weeks suggests she has held her form

3  Onna Bugeisha   different vastly improved Gaines runner since switching to the conventional dirt at SA.........and Gaines is often at her most dangerous 3rd out following a layoff which is the case here

6  Sagebrush Queen   done little wrong in 4 lifetime starts sprinting three of which were at SA........failed routing on the grass twice but it might be a different story today routing on the "dirt"......1 for 1 with Rafael Bejarano aboard

4  Fleet of Gold

race 4    average clarity

6  Quinnette   five-year-old mare sure has been on the improve since Ron Ellis claimed last fall........seems best with 6 or more weeks between starts and gets it this time around........solid reassuring series of a.m. work

4  Toppers Sunshine    terrific job by Robertino Diodoro with his runners shipping if from Arizona.........filly is quite stout when entered at 7 1/2F or 8F on the to the scene jockey Geovanni Franco is riding well especially for Diodoro

5  Rhonda Rocks   yet another Tup shipper who looks like a fit in this spot...........nice preparatory work at Tup and draws the meets top gun in Bejarano

8  Our Little Hen

Long-shot consideration:   3  Born Lucky   somewhat hidden price shot (believe about 9 to 1) here......after two consecutive decent one mile efforts (one on the grass and one on the dirt) this mare sat too far off a pedestrian pace giving her little chance to close at 1 1/8th which really isn't her best distance anyway........likely gets pace today and a distance she likes

race 5    below average clarity

5  A P Pepper   tepid top choice in a wide open affair........arguably best ever was turf to dirt in a race run 2 back........turf in latest......dirt today..........and back to Dryden Van Dyke who just missed at today's race condition in that race 2 back

9  Mia's Storm    both lifetime races when fresh (maiden debut in July 2013 and layoff run in Jan, 2014) stand out as so much her filly is the kind you want "ready" off of layoffs and the works put in by Mac are very aggressive and impressive.....would have been top choice if she had drawn better for her 1st ever at a route

1  Silk In Silver   consistent sort has competed to some degree in all 5 lifetime starts.......owns tactical speed but doesn't necessary need the lead to run.........could be two for two at a route if it wasn't for a brutal trip two races back.........continues to work like a happy healthy filly

3  Lake Maracaibo

race 6    slightly above average clarity

8  Aqua Revelation   nice forward move both in pace and final time in latest with the blinkers put on.......sure appears to be the controlling speed here and with the meetings top gun remaining in the saddle

1  Lord Lochinvar   strong better than par for the MSW level dirt race in last........ and.........the three year old colt is bred to be even better on the green carpet.....should be closing late with a stout late running grass jock in Nakatani aboard

6  Big Medicine Man   just claimed but hot Diodoro for 50K and the recent drill he put into his newbie hints he might have the trump cad for this colt.....seemingly needs lifetime best and might just give it

2  Heat Flash

race 7    average clarity

7  Doctor Dempsey   3 of the last 5 drills for this Bob Baffert 1st timer are gate drills and gate drills of six furlongs.......that tells the stout trainer means business with his new shooter this afternoon

6  Crux   Ron Ellis is a very low percentage trainer with 1st time starters but the strong series of 6F and 5F gate works are too good to be ignored.......that and the fact Ellis has had one heck of a good SA meeting to date

1  Bellamy Concerto   Richard Mandella 1st timer also hints he is ready to roll......and he gets Stevens to ride and everything Stevens has ridden for Mandella over the last two months has been "live"

2  Shakahari

race 8    average clarity

7  Home Run Kitten   on the improve with every start.........last is close to as good as anyone in this field has run to date and she gets in with lowest weight in the race.......such a deal especially in a 1 1/4 affair

5  Diamond Bachelor   blinkers on for the already the best proven early turf route speed in the race seems to bode well for his chances to dominate from the opening bell......nice consistency in all 4 lifetime grass races

6  Enterprising   done little wrong in 5 lifetime route endeavors......would have been top choice if I wasn't leery about him flattening out late at the 1 1/8th distance as he did at GG  in Feb. chasing a soft pace on the AW

3  Flamboyant

race 9    average clarity

2  Glitter of Silver   Baltas is 0 for his last 7 MSW to maiden claiming but still seems dangerous with this laid up fellow dropping into mc for the 1st time as the work regiment says he feels good and is likely ready........ four-year-old has good early speed and Maldonado is up.......tough combo

9  Play Maker   45 to 1 in last (1st time with the blinkers on) and could have won with a better trip......broke a bit slow and ran a bit wide and still only lost by less than 2L......broke poorly in debut too......Quinonez best be alert and ready in the gate

4  Cinematic Cat   decent wake-up in last with 1st time blinkers........7 lbs lighter today with the 7 lbs bug boy up who has done well for Matt Chew in the recent past

8  Gospel Music

3  Tavern Law

1  El Canon
