Santa Anita for Sunday 20 April 2014

Decent card today. On the 1 to 10 scale I would rate it a 7.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Wine Country Wanda   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start and it was at today's somewhat specialized sprint distance of seven furlongs........handling 7F is usually a bonus as many a sprinter isn't too crazy about the extended sprint distance

2  New Nature   three-year-old filly now is forced to face older but most of her races in 2014 fit including her latest which is hidden by a 3 wide trip on a slightly rail biased day

5  She's Flush   needs to stop running wide which she has a habit of doing or she might remain a maiden for a very long time

3  Chasing Hope

race 2    slightly above average clarity

1  Askingfortrouble   only needs to return at 70% of what he was off of the 19 month layoff to be a major factor here.....why not drop so low as he has only 2 lifetime races to his credit and he is now 6

5  Cuneo   major league jockey upgrade here......last was OK but what we want is this runner's strong effort put in 3 races back

2  Lovmeister   4 months off can do wonders sometimes for a cheap horse under the guidance of a capable handler......vastly improved work series says that it has here for this Bill Spawr runner......does need to overcome a tendency to hang

7  Green Dolphin

race 3    slightly above average clarity

4  Abbey Vale    very impressive first in the good U S of A in last.....broke slowly and ran wide (about 8L of trip trouble) and still won going away.......proven at today's mini marathon distance of 1 1/4......good shot to make it 2 for 2 in his new Country and new trainer in Mike Mitchell

5  Hears The Ghost   seems highly likely to get a nice ground saving stalk position behind one or two suspect front runners in the 2 and 6 horse.....that should set him up well to be tough down the stretch

1  Stoney Fleece   very consistent sort and at any turf distance.....but might just be at his very best at today's 1 1/4 on the grass.....not out this by any means

3  Irish Surf

race 4    average clarity

8  Enchanted Fortune   very well bred to sprint......and training like a Baffert 1ster that is meant and ready to roll in his MSW many times am I going to write that before the trainer or yours truly fades off into the sunset

7  Alexis Tangier   beautifully bred Richard Mandella first starter.........very impressive tightly spaced work series with multiple works of merit.....sure seems ready to roll at 1st asking

2  Faith Hope Love   plenty of early speed but not much endurance so on and only 5 1/2F to negotiate........dangerous sort especially with the meets top gun staying with the Craig Dollase runner for the 5th straight time

4  Suzy Malibu

race 5    average clarity

(NOTE:   #12  Soar Home has a shot if she draws into the field)

11  Nazareth   both lifetime races on the Santa Anita hill grass course fit well in this spot and today we get a vastly more successful rider down the hill than the jock who was aboard for both hill races.....and Puype is quite dangerous 1st time in maiden claiming

9  Secret Appeal   seems likely to once again be in a nice stalk position......last isn't bad but obviously she has the right to improve with a start under her belt

1  Comealongwithme   last at 1 mile on the dirt should go a long way at building the endurance of this Neil French contention and flatten out in hill run 2 back......doubt flattens out today especially with Baze up instead of totally struggling Bisono

3  Hugh Knew

race 6    average clarity

7  Happy Idea   really responded (with  a seven length win)  for Bejarano the lone time he rode this three-year-old gelding.......same price of 25K.......same distance of 6F......same drills......should be tough

2  Same Blue Cat   major league rider upgrade for today.....blinkers off and better recent works........cuts claiming price in 1/2........well placed and seems ready

1  Bushwacked   not sure what the catalyst was but this tree-year-old really had a significant wake-up in his latest.......and the connections like what they saw as they step this gelding up 2 claiming levels......last fits....needs the same here

4  Good Samurai

race 7    average clarity

8  Rangi   very consistent one turn grass horse both overseas in GB and here in S Cal.....might be the best animal in the race but one thing he definitely is is the best early speed in the race......mix in Maldonado and you might have an alw repeat winner

6  Greeley Awesome   away since August but training as if he might be ready and more importantly "meant".......not really a sprinter but he showed better speed sprinting in a 6F turf sprint at Bhp  in May of 2013 than you would expect from a slow early turf router

1  Circa'sgoldengear   touch short fig wise (since his best days of 2012) in his hill races but gets 1st time Bejarano and a couple of months off to re-freshen.......not impossible with a clever ground saving trip from the one post

4  Royal F J

race 8    above average clarity

3  Beholder   Mandella seems to like to use a soft spot every year for this world class filly to provide her with a "work" like race and still add a few bucks to her sizable bankroll and beef her up like only a race can do for bigger fish down the road

4  Magic Union   seems likely to chase our top pick all away around the track........don't see an upset here unless Beholder has a very bad day

1  Legacy   Sadler filly deserves the step into a small Stakes race......but she likely didn't think she would have to face the top gal in the Country

2  Moulin De Mougin

race 9    average clarity

6  Bench Light   claimed for $25K two races back by John Sadler and the stout conditioner wheeled him back for the same price and he scored quite again for $25K with few reasons not to believe he can't repeat his last

5  Proud Boss   improving sort sure is working exceptional well off of a 2 1/2 month break in the action......seems like the controlling speed especially with the 5 lbs bug boy's weight break which ought to be very significant at the distance of 1 1/4 miles

3  Hawk's Eye   difficult 2014 for A. C. Avila (0 for 30 at SA and counting) but my guess is he is overdo to snap out of the doldrums.......drops here multiple levels with his five-year-old who sure has been facing better.......distance seems OK as he beat 10 of 15 runners at today's 1 1/14 distance in Brazil in a Grade 1 in 2012

10  Husband's Folly

7  Affrettando

4  Accelerant
