Santa Anita for Friday 25 April 2014

For those of you planning on purchasing our special ($31.50) full card selections for Churchill Downs on Derby Day, May 3rd please don't procrastinate as logistically it makes in easier on yours truly setting up the emails that will be sent at about 6 p.m. central time on Friday night, May 2nd. Thank you.

Decent card today and Saturday's looks really good.  On the 1 to 10 scale let's call today's a 6 1/2.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  City Ride   simply out training anyone in the field.....and Mike Harrington year in and year out likes to be ready in these early 4 1/2 furlong baby races

5  Robo Girl   showing good early speed in his a.m. preparation.....so if the 7lb bug boy breaks this 1st timer cleanly he might be difficult to catch at the abbreviated sprint distance of 4 1/2 furlongs

3  Sweet Mz. Poppet   another baby showing speed in the a.m......trainer has been dismal the last couple of years.......the previous year before that he was quite dangerous........maybe he starts his turn around here

race 2    slightly above average clarity

7  Take a Risk   most running credentials in the race by far........and he is only one of two runners in the race that are older than three with the other being a so so looking 1st timer

6  Stadtpark   Aguirre 1st timer has been in training for quite some time at Bhp and LA and shows numerous works of merit for the mc 30K level.......rather sure he is ready at 1st asking.......now he just has to take to the SA surface

3  Live Lucky   so so works but mom has tossed 2 winners form 2 starters and Hess has had debut maiden claimers run well a few times off of "average at best" drills in the past

2  In Defiance

race 3    average clarity

6  Magic Number   claimed by Belvoir who is stout 1st out after a claim.......and he puts his newbie in a 7F affair which has been this runner's best distance so far.....2 wins and a 2nd in 3 races at 7F........and he gets Bejarano to ride

3  Valarta   fell off quit a bit in latest....needs a rebound to her race 2 back where she ran a par like effort for today's lower level.....sure like the rider switch to the 7 lbs. bug boy from a low % rider (of late) in Stra......impressive reassuring near bullet 59:3H drill since her last

4  Eltoninadress   ultra consistent five-year-old mare has not missed the board in 12 fast rated conventional dirt races......as usual the mare should be in the mix from the get go.......1 for 1 at today's 7F distance

2  Musical Arts

race 4    average clarity

4  Rookie Sensation   last 4 grass races run fit quite well here and his latest is hidden in that he was blocked about 4 or 5 lengths on the turn and the stretch or would have won for fun........he exploded when he finally got free in late stretch but ran out of real estate

3  Joelito   on the improve with each and every start since Hollendorfer took over the training duties from Sadler......1 for 1 at today's 1 1/8th turf distance

1  Quick Casablanca   big win Sunday for Mac with a new shooter in a nw2 alw race down the hill........that horse Safety Belt trained well........his new shooter here is from the Big Apple and he is also doing very well in the a.m.........trainers often win in bunches

race 5    slightly below average clarity

3  Traweek    very strong hidden adjusted for trouble (and any pace) figs in 3 of his last 5 conventional dirt races.......like the step up as it might be an indication the five year old is doing well (or on the negative side - might be a gimme for a go in next start at a lower level).........60/40 it is a go and if it is he should be one exciting price

2  Dunmore East   decent history on the Santa Anita main track (5 2 0 3) .......just claimed by Vann Belvoir who is stout 1st out following a claim especially when they work decently as this seven-year-old seems to be.......T C Baze wants the mount back as he has won 2 of his last 3 with the runner

4  Newfound Gold   just claimed by Ted West.....last 3 races sure fit solidly but that might be the problem for the new trainer........never easy to get four straight strong races out of a cheap claimer without a break in the action.......only 15 days since last......but........he sure will be tough if West accomplishes the task

11  Courtside

race 6    slightly below average clarity

1  Hijra   3 of 4 lifetime grass races sure seem like they fit quite well here for this French invader......good work regiment for this Hollendorfer newbie and Bejarano and his agent want the mount..........seems meant and ready for her U S of A debut

3  Starry Skies   seems as though this Jones laid up since Sept. of 2012 competitor is fully ready off of the extended hiatus from the game if his works are worth a hoot......and Marty Jones sure has been stout getting laid up (proven in the past) SA hill runners ready fresh

6  Velvet Mesquite   good position seems highly likely for this Heap runner who should be on or close to the front end in an affair that I believe will yield a reasonable pace up front.......decent shot to make it 3 for 4 down the majestic Santa Anita hill turf course

2  Pica

race 7    slightly above average clarity

1  I Don't Care Who   big fig 40K claiming win 2 back so he went off favorite in his last in a nw alw race..........ran his eyeballs out just to be 3rd as he was caught wide close to a solid pace.......seems very much the best here (and with a better post) if he repeats either one of his last two starts

5  Bettys Bambino   debut 2 back on an off track is quite strong and fig wise is better than par for today's level.......easy grass win in second lifetime start is nothing special even though she did win by 4L.....back to the dirt today.....two things to prove......getting a route of ground and running as well on "fast" dirt as "off" dirt

4  Magic Mark   fell off quite a bit in last.....needs a rebound to effort 2 back to have a shot here and maybe for our top pick to run a little less than his best

6  Garen

race 8    average clarity

8  Rob's Pal   seems likely to be in a decent stalk position and has enough early gas for Baze to get on over some and avoid being 3 wide (or worse) on the 1st turn which usually does most grass runners in.......most of this fellow's grass races fit decently at the lowest maiden claiming grass level of 50K

6  Misdeed   major league wake-up 1st time with the blinkers on in last........sharp reassuring two works since.........drops into maiden claiming for the 1st time ever.........and Richard Mandella is often at his most dangerous 3rd out after a layoff which is the case here

7  Chattering Class   1st on the lawn but bred to like it.......if this gelding does take to it lookout as he gets in feather light being a three year old and having a 5 lbs bug boy up.....who.....can make the 107 lbs........dangerous wire to wire shot

9  Secret Wishes

10  Kozani

4  Van Fraassen
