Santa Anita for Sunday 27 April 2014

For those of you planning on purchasing our special ($31.50) full card selections for Churchill Downs on Derby Day, May 3rd please don't procrastinate as logistically it makes in easier on yours truly setting up the emails that will be sent at about 6 p.m. central time on Friday night, May 2nd. Thank you.

Difficult card this afternoon as you can tell by the "clarity ratings". But difficult cards yield some handsome returns when you are right. Sure would be nice to salvage a mediocre weekend of handicapping by yours truly. We shall see.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

5  Queen of the Hill   O'Neal might have claimed this fellow at the right time as he sure leaped forward in his last......and I doubt he falls off today as O'Neill steps him up 3 levels hinting the big effort did not take it's toll

3  Sidebar  seemingly the best early speed in the field and a speed rider up in Delgadillo who is often tough to get past in the late stages

4  Smil'n From Above   not sure what got into this hanger but he sure failed to repeat his bad habit in his last.......impressive 4 wide win.....big step up today.......might feel really good

race 2    slightly below average clarity

6  Sunny Kat   bad trips in both lifetime starts which were on the sod or this colt could have won either one of his since July but the work regiment spells......R E A D Y

4  Mal Verde   Sadler trains our top choice and he also trains this 1st timer who also appears to be ready fresh off of some good looking drills at Slr and SA

7  La Jolla Cove   nicely bred 1st timer is training fairly well for Ellis who has a dismal record with 1st timer.........but......2 of his last 3 that started their careers on the sod ran well hitting the board........and Maldonado has won 5 of his last 8 mounts for Ellis including yesterday's nightcap

3  Willi Be Wild

race 3    slightly below average clarity

4  Rhodium   plenty of speed in this filly 32K should set things up for this late runner especially with the successful (good with a closer) bug boy aboard

3  Vicki Victoria   nice history when she sits just off of the pace and that surely seems wise here because it looks as if the pace will be a bit too hot.......Maldonado likes to send but he has had success with this filly just off the leaders so I doubt he will be that interested in sending all out early

2  Chippette   improving East Coast invader picked up by Paul Aguirre seems dangerous.......exits a key race run at Prx where she was only beaten by 1 1/2L for the win

6  Time for Angie

race 4    below average clarity

3  Dream Baby   tepid top pick here.......speed sprinter to date should open up a lead if she takes to the turf......and if that occurs she has the pedigree to last a mile

7  Visions of Candy   steadily developing sort has proven she can handle two turns on the main track......1st ever on the grass this afternoon with a decent pedigree for it

8  Cloud Commander   better recent work tab hints this six-year-old mare might be ready for her best and her best fits decently here

6  Summer Fascinatio

race 5     average clarity

8  Fly to Freedom   sure like Peter Miller with layoff drop downs which is the case here.....and he has this returnee wound up like a top hitting the track to work every 5 or 6 days since March 19th.....rather sure ready

5  Ryderroo   3 of 5 lifetime races with the blinkers on fit decently here and two of them are disguised by bad trips.......and we get higher % jock up today

2  Warren's Tricia R.   moved forward in last some in her 2nd lifetime start....and now she takes that ever significant drop out of MSW racing........and last but maybe more importantly she just worked the best drill of her young life

7  Charissa

race 6    average clarity

3  Miss Super Quick   nice 1st ever in the Richard Mandella barn layoff run in last.......and now the stout conditioner puts the hammer down as he just drilled his new shooter 58:4H best of 54.....shooting to get their picture taken this afternoon

5  Burning Arch   beautifully bred expensive 1st timer sure is working as if she is meant and ready for Hollendorfer in her those grass works at Pmm in January

1  Bird In Love    tossed a turf route clunker in last.....big MSW turf debut run two back......solid preparatory drills for jock sticks around......rebound city today

11  Not too Shiny

race 7     average clarity

1  Peacenik  crushing the opposition in last 3 "fast" tracks while stepping up the claiming ladder........Spawr doubles the claiming price today and rightfully so as the pace and final time fig sure stand out here

3  Too Fast to Pass   four year old needs a rebound off of a clunker in his last......but........he has a good history of rebounding off of lackluster efforts in the past

5  Los Bambinos   just claimed by Richard Baltas and the new stout connections seem to have a decent spot as this mid pack runner is likely to benefit from what should be a lively pace up front

2  Shame On Alex

race 8    slightly below average clarity

2  Parranda   successful recent Grade 3 GP invader gets a trainer upgrade to Hollendorfer and seemingly catches a soft local bunch for his 1st run on the West Coast

1  Moone's My Name   seems best at one mile on the sod in that she finishes well instead of flattening out as she does past one mile.....good post and a fairly hot trainer with his turf stock in Sadler

5  Theatre Star   going for 5 straight wins and then there is that Proctor/Stevens why not selected higher ?.....last (her 1st at SA) was a win but a somewhat soft pace and final time fig.....and our top pick was a slightly better runner in Florida than this gal was

7  Journey On

race 9    slightly below average clarity

7  Shared Image   very strong (would win this) maiden claiming (50K) debut 3 back and the race is well disguised by a bad trip......two straight bad efforts in the MSW ranks....drops back into maiden claiming and this time all the way to the bottom.....successful rider/trainer combo in Stra/Owens

9  West Coast Storm   useful mc debut and improved works since.......seems ready to move forward and if she does she will likely run at least par......and par looks pretty good here

1  Sofis Furia   trainer does fairly well with limited starters and that includes 1st timers.....last gate drill at LA looks pretty good

6  Cleverly Beverly

8  My Wish Come True

3  Stracciatella
