Santa Anita for Sunday 4 May 2014

Congratulations to California Chrome and all his connections!

I like the card today which hopefully works out well following a tough day at Santa Anita yesterday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slight above average clarity

3  Big Cazanova    very impressive 1st ever in the good old U S of A in his last........ran 2nd to Indy Point in Peru three times.....and Indy Point would beat these by the length of the stretch.......big potential in 2nd USA start

1  Dublin Up   beaten by 9L by the Kentucky Derby winner in his last............1st on the turf and bred for it..........might fire a big 1st ever grass effort on or near the front end

4  Sammy Mandeville    O'Neill runners sure have woken up the last couple weeks.......never fails to amaze me how barns wake up seemingly at a flip of a switch.......as a handicapper you need to adjust quickly......I didn't yesterday and it helped to attribute to a poor day of handicapping at SA

race 2    average clarity

4  Chasinntheaces   showed very little in his lifetime MSW debut way back in January of 2013..........off since but working like a radically improved colt for Mr. Baffert......and I sure like his pedigree for a 6 panel sprint........believe ready to roll at a high level

5  Candir   best set of drills for a Shirreffs 1st timer in many a moon.....and mother tosses winners........5 winners from 6 starters and 3 of them were Stakes winners......rather sure meant and ready

6  Sing Wing Bling   already owns stout dangerous early speed and adds the blinkers for today.........cut back of 1/2 furlong seems like a plus.......Mike Smith (some uncharacteristically bad rides at CD yesterday) has won 3 of his last 4 mounts for Bill Spawr

7  Crux

race 3    slightly below average clarity

3  Xuang Feng   very solid efforts/figs in last two races..........and his last his hidden by a bad trip........should be in the mix from the get go but needs to avoid a suicidal speed duel as there is plenty of early speed in the field

1  My Jealous   somewhat suspicious drop or would be top pick.........trainer is in go mode and Bejarano is up.....still .........beat somewhat better by 6L........toss a coin

8  Shoer High   new trainer takes over.......off pace runner is seemingly in a race where the closers should be motoring late........needs his effort 3 back........ in this in a big way if his new trainer can get it out of him

2  Senator Bob

Long-shot consideration:   4  Justa Gusta      switch to T C Baze who has been Knapp's "go to" jock of late.....last time Baze rode this horse the gelding fired a strong effort.......seems best at 5 1/2F......gets plenty of pace to flatter his late kick......seems like a nice price shot if the hot pace develops

race 4    slightly above average clarity

1  Nashoba's Gold  nice way of traveling on the grass....done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts all on the grass and two of them at today's 1 1/8th distance........sharp turf drills.......hard not to see this filly putting in a solid effort here

5  Diversy Harbor    sat too far off of a pedestrian pace in her last and still impressively closed to run 2nd........like our top pick she has fired in all three lifetime starts and seems likely to keep the ball rolling today

3  One More   right there with our top two picks in her last.....and the way O'Neill runners have been firing of late her best might occur today and her best has a shot here

 6  Margot Machance

race 5    average clarity

3  Tiz But A Dream   last race her 2nd lifetime start fits.......trainer is good sprint-sprint-route and also good 1st time at a route........and her pedigree is decent for a one mile route race

7  Madame Forbes   five year old versus a bunch of youngsters has been off since 30 Jun 13 when she ran well in her debt.......works say she is ready fresh once again and she gets a major league rider upgrade

2  Royal Shaft   bet in her maiden debut and she was disappointing......but a solid rider upgrade and she has worked 6 times in the last 4 weeks.....seems really wound up and ready

5  L X Sunrise

race 6    average clarity

5  Grand Humor   on the right end of the learning curve.......last was very impressive running wide up on the pace on a slightly rail biased day

9  Fly Boy Roy    when Hollendorfer picks up a new horse who is a consistent sort lookout.....that is the case here and he gets the meets top gun to ride

12  Solid Wager   1st time gelding today and an impressive bullet 6F drill to finish off his work regiment just 5 days ago.....hasn't been seen since last summer when he faced better........seems like a major player today if he takes to his 1st ever endeavor on the lawn

2  Fighting On

race 7    slightly above average clarity

2  Reno Rebel   very strong efforts/figs in last two endeavors and the race two back is disguised by a bad trip......I imagine rider and trainer will get a nice round of applause when they appear in the SA paddock if they make it home in time for this race........probably the 2nd best three year old in the Sherman barn and the whole world knows who is best

10  Airfoil   sure like the switch to Bejarano on this late runner who has never seen 7F but runs as though he will appreciate the extended sprint distance......likes the SA dirt quite a bit and his record on it really isn't indicative of that

7  Got Even   best ever run in 3 attempts at 7F was running route to 7F......that is the scenario here and trainer Peter Miller has been firing on all cylinders the last couple of weeks

9  Thunder Role

race 8    average clarity

8  Polytechnicien   hot trainer and a nicely improved turf effort in latest.....sure like the small step up in claiming as it makes it more reassuring that this eight-year-old exited his last without too much hurting him

9  Bluegrass Reward   last two are very strong (last on the dirt - two back on the turf) and both are at today's 1 mile distance.....wide in both races with a pace factor as well........if Mr. Blanc could get a little more clever that would be a plus

2  Oak Kye Why   major wake-up in last with the 7lb. bug boy up.......good post to take off like a rocket like he did last time out.........likely on the lead but I believe he still will run OK for the bug boy if he has to stalk

1  Causeithertz

5  Buymeabond

12  Mind The Master
