Santa Anita for Saturday 17 May 2014

2014 Preakness Stakes is race number 12 at Pimlico

3  California Chrome   will likely need to take back some as in the Derby in what should be a very hot pace up front........should be stout once again if the track comes up fair following an off track yesterday

7  Kid Cruz   only runner in here to compete at Pimlico and he was very impressive in his lone effort on it's surface.......came flying despite a very lackluster pace up front......plenty of pace to flatter his close today

8  Social Inclusion   speed of the speed worked well at Pim and will be dangerous if he fires his effort two races back or/and gets a speed favoring track

10  Ride On Curlin   Borel took back to last to get to his beloved rail but left too much work to do........and he was blocked and had to maneuver out in the stretch......Rosario will sit closer today and likely get plenty of pace up front to close into

2  General a Rod   bad trip in Derby as he was shuffled back and ran wide on both turns.......seems likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip thru turn 1 and that is 1/2 the battle

Best of luck as always!

Santa Anita race 1    slightly below average clarity

4  Parada   solid effort/win turf (non-claiming) to dirt in 2nd lifetime start...........turf ( non-claiming) to dirt today for her 4th lifetime start.......hmmm

7  R T Reckless   believe the connections are screaming "claim her please"......but very stout here if I am wrong about that as her race 2 back would CRUSH these

1  Miss Swiss Rose   last fits well but I am leery of her being put up for a tag of only $16K.......not as leery as our 2nd choice but still leery

race 2    slightly below average clarity

10 Bench Press  oddly very similar scenario as our top pick in race 1.......same protected race/drop and go for an easy win two back.......non claiming race in last.....drops back into claiming.....go go go today

3  Pass The Pico   a bit of a clunker in his last.....but if he rebounds to his effort 2 or 3 back he should be tough here

8  Cinco De Mario   toss out speed 1 18th dirt route effort in last....used up early and I doubt he wants any part of a 1 1/8th route on the main track.........back to a sprint today.......lowest level sprint so far and a hot trainer in O'Neill.....danger city

4  Luckbox Sam

race 3    slightly above average clarity

4  Seeking The West   lone speed here......good works.........stout trainer in Ellis.......and the gelding is very ratable......seems very tough

2  Midnite View   bad trip in last hides a solid wake up effort 1st time with the blinkers on.........and a very impressive bullet (best of 72) 5/8ths drill since

3  Honduran   might be a better horse with the blinkers off......blinkers off today and for a trainer who historically is good which such a maneuver

race 4    slightly above average clarity

2  Obviously    very good history fresh........and the way in which he is training with the dogs up on the grass indicates he is extremely ready once again......speed of the speed here is 6 for 9 at the distance on the grass

4  Silentio    will likely sit mid pack hoping our 3rd choice presses the 2 horse some and if that occurs he most likely will be a major player..........1st time Stevens taking over for the injured Bejarano

1  Winning Prize   believe Nakatani will let our top choice go to some extent and (avoid a suicidal pace) as his mount scored 2 races back stalking the leader in a Grade 2

6  Smart Ellis

race 5    slightly below average clarity

7  Jovita's Tuffy   sure likes SA and might be a good claim by Sierra as this gelding is vastly better on the conventional dirt than other surfaces.......2 of his 3 lifetime dirt races are stout here including his latest

6  Courtside   three solid races in a row and all three are somewhat hidden by pace or bad position......used to be one dimensional but now he can run off of the pace where as before he was a speed-ball only

9  Money Canon   Mulhall is awakening from the doldrums and she drops this gelding to the lowest level since she claimed him for 5K more back in Nov.....turf tightener in non claiming event in last......might be nicely legged up

1  Gal Has To Like It

race 6    average clarity

4  Back To Bako   very nice move forward with the blinkers off in last........solid reassuring 4F near bullet drill since.......same or better likely today and that would make him tough

9  Incline Village   very consistent efforts when placed in turf sprints......and seems best with ample time between starts and gets it.....good trainer/rider team in Koriner/Talamo

3  I Earned It Baby   nice laid up Gaines runner has a prolonged good looking work regiment that says ready.........1st on the grass but the three year old colt owns a decent pedigree for it

8  Number Five

race 7    average clarity

6  Slewissurfing   very good early speed in this spot especially with the scratch of the 2 horse.......Ellis seems to have wound this one up with 3 works over a 12 day span.....all bizz today

9  Destino   best ever and a fig that fits solidly here was his effort 2 back.......1st time gelding today and improved work.........maiden start number 34 might be a good one........trainer scored with a price shot on Friday

12  Triunfo   another 1st time gelding and in his case also blinkers off......laid up 2 weeks shy of one year but drops and training well.....doubt this is a gimme or he would have returned at a higher level

13  Fifteen Black

race 8    slightly below average clarity

5  Grachus The Hunter   good work tab prior to MSW dirt debut but no support at the windows.......good works since......drops into a maiden claiming for 2nd start in a grass race......bred well for the grass..........trainer is bad with 1sters and good with 2nd time starters.......hmmm

6  Rob's Pal   grass figs/efforts fit well for the mdn50K level.......good trainer/rider combo especially on the grass in Mullins/Baze

9  Misdeed   both grass races (his last two) with the blinkers on fit fine here........but still has something to prove going as far as 1 1/8th.......has the right conditioner in Mandella to get it out of him

1  Indian Gods

race 9    average clarity

5  Empress Of Midway   improving three year old......and improving for a barn that has been firing on all cylinders of late

7  Delta Flower    nice Arkansas bred is also getting better with each start........owns sold early speed.......1st start for Hollendorfer and his new trainer sure has him cranked up for for his 1st race in S. Cal

3  Larocco   solid race at SA three races back.......blinkers go back on and seemingly has never trained better........rather sure sitting on best ever and at a nice price for trainer Jorge Periban

1  D'ya Knowwhatimean

race 10    average clarity

5  Exclusive Girl   trainer has struggled at the meeting but his filly here is proven down the hill and gets a significant rider upgrade especially when you consider the bug boys weight break

1  Warren's Jen Fizz   both races down the SA hill grass course fit quite well........few reasons not to believe she can't run another competitive race down the hill this afternoon

11  Asparagus    bred awfully nice for a Cal-bred for the and bottom.........and Dean Peterson wins at a high rate with maiden 1st starters which this youngster happens to be

6  Bea's Bench

Long-shot consideration:   2  Backseat Blonde   worked well prior to debut and didn't fire........blinkers off and the works since seem even better........and...... the trainer Neil French is dangerous 1st time on the grass and dangerous at a price

race 11    slightly below average clarity

10  Storm Comin Thru   big fresh race last Sept on the dirt at Bsr.......fresh today and fresh with a prolonged work series that says meant and ready for O'Neill and company.......30 to 1 ML would be sweet but I think the morning line is too high

7  Presiding Justice   straight and strong looking stretch drive in his winning maiden debut.....claimed by Sadler out of the Feb race and the drills suggest he made a good claim

11  Red N Black Attack   5 lifetime starts 2 of which were run on conventional dirt.....and those 2 races stand out as his two best of his career and are par like efforts for today's level

9  Fly Boy Roy

12  Romar Success

1  Fight The Power
