Santa Anita for Thursday 22 May 2014

Not the best of cards to start 5 straight days of racing at Santa Anita.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

7  Enchanting Lady  just purchased in March for a hefty price by Baffert and company and training exceptionally well for a two year old filly in May........she is working at 5 furlongs faster than many two year old races would be run at this time of year.......that is really saying something

3  Seduire   very solid work tab for this Hollendorfer filly 1st timer and most of the trainer's wins from 1st starters come from maiden filly MSW runners

6  Slew's Charm   yet another training as if she is good enough to win at 1st asking.........but.........our top choice is training at an amazing level and our 2nd choice is training close to an exceptional level......Harrington 1st starter likely will need a very clean trip to score

4  Yes She's a Dance

race 2    slightly below average clarity

2  Quay Factor   better effort/fig in debut than any in here has ever run but it was a dirt race.........should be stout if she can run as well on the sod but her pedigree is only average at best for it

3  Hanserella   last wasn't so hot at least number wise but her effort 2 back is better than par......and she handles the SA hill grass course quite well......needs to overcome her tendency to hang

6  Lakota Road   still a maiden but she owns multiple par efforts for today's level at a route........needs similar for today 1st down the majestic SA hill

race 3    average clarity

6  Kate's Event   finally woke up in last albeit in a route.....but.......he appreciates the extended sprint distance of 7F (4 2 0 1)........drop to lowest claiming level ever doesn't bother me much as he hasn't gotten 1st or 2nd place money for the last 13 months

1  Giant Ego   seems to have the best early speed in a race that really lacks the commodity.......Gryder has woken up a bit lately and has always been a decent jock loose on a lead

2  Gladding    2nd best early speed in the race......should get a nice close up position in a race where that seems advantageous.......Belvoir runner has been absent since late September but is working well enough to be ready fresh

race 4    average clarity

5  This Cat's Awesome   6 of 7 lifetime races say that this three year old gelding is the horse to overcome in this weak looking group of maiden claimers

3  Jack Diz    works seem good enough and regular enough to possibly be ready to roll at a high level in his debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

8  Smoke Tree   another 1st timer working well enough to possibly compete for the win in his maiden debut.........finished his work regiment with a best of 17 bullet drill at LA just 5 days ago hinting he is sharp when it counts the in right before his debut

1  Broadcaster

race 5    slightly below average clarity

5  Chain Lightning   dangerous speed.........dangerous light weight........and desirable cut back in we just need Amelia Green to break well and hang on in only her 6th mount as a jockey

3  Tough Business   horrendous maiden debut breaking very poorly and then showed nothing down the hill on the grass........Miller must think she can break well for the trainer to put this filly in an abbreviated sprint of only 5F........gets dirt today and has trained OK on it at Slr

1  Regift   six year old mare is making only her 3rd lifetime start but she is training well at Bsr.......decent effort last Fall when last seen at Bsr flashing good early speed in a 4F race

2  Charissa

race 6    average clarity

5  Mahalo Princess   consistent sort when entered in 5 and 5 1/2 furlong in last and the step up says she is feeling good........should be able to sit close which is what she likes and her chances enhance if the the multiple level drop down (our 4th choice) is hurting

2  Mextaxa   ultra consistent in 5 1/2 and 6 furlong affairs.......away for 2+ months but 1st out following the Truman claim and the trainer has her working well.....jockey upgrade and weight off......such a deal

6  Secret Genius   late runner likes the rail which is a plus.......Knapp runner often flattens out in her races at 6F or 5 1/2 seems like a good fit as her record at the abbreviate distance suggests ( 2 1 1 0)

7  Julio's Gold

Long-shot consideration:   3  Valarta   4 of 5 races when Kayla Stra has been up fit fine here.....she is back aboard today.........toss out last two races as this filly wants no part of seven panels.......5 1/2 fits much better

race 7    slightly below average clarity

6  Prayer Be Mine   hidden return to the races in latest (which was off of a 5+ month) as this Hollendorfer three year old filly dueled in decent pace on a slightly dead rail on a very hot day......and there was a lack of action at the windows which hints she wasn't that cranked up or meant......pounded to 4-5 and 3-5 in first two lifetime starts

1  Pay the Debt   jock Felipe Martinez sure has struggled in S Cal but seems to fit this Sherlock filly well.......last fits fine but her race 2 back off of short rest is even better......short rest for today

3  Versye   impressive MSW debut win last September.....layoff last placed over her head with works that hinted there was no way she could be ready for a route Stakes race fresh off of the was the gimme and it likely is go go go today

race 8    average clarity

3  Burnng Arch   very impressive late pace in her MSW debut on 27 April........her trainer is stout 1st at a route ......and the owner didn't dish out $440K in 2012 to have a turf sprinter

1  Serene Melody   fits well if this Shirreffs four year old filly is ready fresh off of the bench as her last two races run late last year average one length better than par......most connections will take that as will most golfers

7  Sweet as a Rose   seems better at a route and had little chance sprinting down the hill in last anyway as Nakatani sat too far off of a pedestrian like pace

2  Star Act

4  Venetian

6  Kadesha
