Del Mar for Saturday 26 July 2014

Good card today. Let's call it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Dave Gordon our very capable substitute handicapper will be doing the selections for The Racing Digest Sunday as I will be busy studying Weds. and Thurs. race cards. My son's wedding is next Saturday and there is plenty going on relating to (what I hope is one of the happiest days of my son's life) the wedding all week long.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly above average clarity

4  Off The Deep End   SA (dirt) maiden claiming debut was very impressive both pace and final time wise.........as was his 2nd lifetime start on the SA hill where he broke poorly and rushed and still only lost by a head.........just popped a bullet drill at Dmr.......seems likely to handle his 3rd different surface

2  Sidepocket Champ   seems best on the AW yet this is only his 3rd start on a synthetic surface........2nd out since the D'Amato claim and the recent drills at Dmr hint it will be a good one

1  Grand Humor   on the right end of the learning curve.......1st on synthetic but his pedigree for it is decent........T C Baze knows this gelding well as he has been up for all 10 lifetime starts

6  Presiding Justice

race 2    average clarity

4  Cherubin   quick leaving the gate and owns significant early speed so the cut back of one furlong likely will be a positive.........1st on the lawn but bred OK for it

5  Betty's Bambino   both lifetime grass races fit well here........winner of his last came back to win a one mile turf Stakes race at a big price.......like our top choice the cut back of one furlong looks like a plus

1  Melatonin    new trainer for this laid up colt and he has his newbie well trained in the a.m. to be ready in the p.m.......lone turf race was down the SA hill and it was an impressive bad trip 3rd.......ran very wide losing about 6L and lost by less than 3L

8  Louden's Gray

race 3    average clarity

4  Tatum   solid MSW debut at Lrc.....two 5F drills since at Dmr hints of a healthy individual......seems likely to fire as good or better this afternoon

2  Appealing Lady   Sadler is good with two year old filly 1st timers and appears to have this filly all cranked up and ready for her debut

6  Olympic Lady   Victor Garcia historically isn't too hot with 1sters but the drills for this young filly are too good to ignore......bought at sale for $20K......might be a real bargain......we shall see

9  Ashley's Sassy

race 4    slightly above average clarity

2  Sunday Rules   D'Amato filly has been ultra impressive in all three lifetime starts (two of which were at Dmr)........capable of setting blazing fractions and still able to run strong final times.......very few can

3  Bonus Spin   easy nine length win at 1-5 in only a 4 horse field.......most likely a very stress-less race.......might feel awfully good and up for the challenge of this significant step up

8  Go West Marie   Cal-bred has been competing in open company his whole career until today.......seemingly never sharper and just worked a very stout best of 101 five furlong drill on the Del Mar surface

4  Rovenna

race 5    average clarity

2  Baruta   3 of her 4 lifetime U S of A starts are better than par........and she was also quite good in Brz in 2012 and 2013...........good post for Espinoza to break from

7  Marcyjane   strong late running turf routes in last two races.......DQ'ed from 2nd in her latest to 6th (ouch) .....new jock today.......1 for 1 at today's distance......1 for 10 at other turf distances......should be motoring late

1  Zanbo   best on very firm (fast) turf and so far the new Dmr turf course is yielding lightning fast fractions and final times (in the one mile Wicker Stakes on Wednesday Panic Stable's Rangi crossed the 7 furlong mark in an eye popping 120:60 and rightfully staggered home for a tiring 2nd)

9  Magnificent Shirl

race 6    slightly above average clarity

4  Honor Matt   ultra impressive MSW debut and it is disguised by a bad trip.......and this Miller youngster went off at 15 to 1 in a 6 horse field which suggests the colt surprised his connections........that hints he wasn't all that cranked up......that is scary if true

10  American Pharoah   Bob Baffert 1st timer worked well at Lrc and more importantly has worked well since switching to Dmr........$300K purchase seems ready to roll

1  Texas Red   AP invader comes out of a relatively slow MSW affair but he had a bad trip and closed fast late despite a slow pace up front........seems dangerous and a factor in 2nd lifetime race this afternoon

8  Harmonic

race 7    average clarity

7  Big Tire   definitely on the right end of the learning curve and his recent a.m. work hints the trend will continue today.......Glatt runners have been firing on all cylinders to start the Dmr meeting

8  Toledo Eddie   race 2 back on the SA conventional dirt is stellar both in pace and final time.......a ton here if he can repeat it in his 1st ever on the Del Mar synthetic

2  Big Cazanova   slowly improving since he arrived in the USA from Peru for Peter Miller........plenty of room for more upside as this fellow ran 2nd to the fabulous Indy Point twice in Peru

3  Seeking The West

race 8    slightly above average clarity

3  Frac Daddy   won all 3 Graded races on the AW in 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 affairs.......and the winning margin averaged over 4 lengths.......! 1/16th AW G2 here.........McPeek knows how to ship and win

8  Summer Hit   8 for 10 in the win column when racing on AW surfaces.....and one for one at Dmr.....and 2 for 2 at the distance......that'll do

11 Fed Biz   been off since November but training as if he has been very pointed for this race.....makes sense as he is a perfect 2 for 2 on the Dmr Poly-track

4  Soi Phet

race 9    slightly below average clarity

2  Yes Yes Yes   layoff sprint race should tighten up this Eurton three year old gelding enough to be a major factor in this affair........race lack speed and he owns enough to sit up close here

3  J Kat   turf sprinter who has yet to show much ability to go long sure looks loose here and loose with a sharp grass jockey up in Nakatani

6  Specimen   debut MSW debut in a turf sprint........bred extremely well to handle a turf route........more seems to be in the cards this afternoon in his 2nd lifetime endeavor

4  Candy's Shoes

Long-shot consideration:   1  Nowalking   believe MSW debut last was a tune-up and if it was it was an awfully strong tune-up at one mile on the SA dirt........bred for the lawn quite well.....and is proven around two turns......danger city

race 10    average clarity

6  Copper Bay   trainer is in "go mode" and seems dangerous with this layoff drop down.........only 1 for 15 so the drop makes sense especially off of a layoff where there are more ? marks for the claiming vultures

11  Heyyoucan   another layoff drop down from a trainer in Peter Miller who is also very dangerous with such a move

3  The Tom Squad   invader has very few efforts that don't fit fine here......new trainer for today and he wins at a solid clip 1st time out when he takes over the training duties of a given horse

10  Clubhouse Rock

14  Pressure Time

9  Dehere Is Gone
