Del Mar for Thursday 21 August 2014

14 race card at Saratoga on Saturday for Travers day. So the $24.50 for our special publication breaks down to $1.75 per race. Good looking card to boot. On the 1 to 10 scale I'd rate it a 7.

Average card at Del mar today. Friday appears better.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Pillar of Strength   drop makes sense with the win bonus in effect for this Hess Big Apple invader......sure fits fig wise......1st ever on a synthetic surface is the question mark

4  Newport Red    solid 7F win two races back 1st time with blinkers.......tried the grass in latest and it wasn't too bad an effort......but more importantly drops back to a more realistic level for a mdn20K our top choice he does need to prove himself on the Del Mar surface

1  Prime Agenda   17 to 1 for a Miller invader hints the race was a gimme to drop and...........go go go this afternoon 2nd out after a 2 month layoff

race 2    average clarity

5  Newfound Gold   gets claimed almost every race he runs in and seems to preform well no matter who trains him.......just claimed by a hot trainer of late in Kristin it's hard not to see another strong effort from this hard knocking seven year old gelding

2  Gal Has to Like It   consistent sort on any surface was just snatched at the claiming box by Ted West who seems to be getting his act together in a big way these days.......3 wins & a 2nd with 6 starters at the Del Mar meeting........wide trip in last hides his last a little

8  Pepper Sweet   claimed for 16K and and drops 2 months later to as if the ample time between starts did this colt some good........likes the AW at GG and horse's that appreciate that surface usually handle the Dmr AW

4  Senator Bob

race 3    slightly below average clarity

8  Moonie   seems like a spot ripe for a 1st timer and this Freeman two year old filly is working well enough to be dangerous in her maiden debut........and mom has tossed 5 winners from 5 starters

7  Haaay Sexy Lady   flashed speed and stopped in both lifetime races..........dropping out of MSW racing into maiden claiming can really help this kind.........trainer has had a good Dmr meeting with limited starters

5  South Texas    Dean Pederson is dangerous with mc 1st timers and mom has tossed 7 winners from 7 starters with many of them precociously winning at are so so but works aren't everything especially for mc 1st timers

11  Brazilian Barbeque

Long-shot consideration:   6  Libby    Molly Pearson has done well in S Cal this summer and she might be ready with this 1ster........and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters.......amazingly 1st timers  5, 6, and 8 have broodmares that have tossed a total of 16 winners from 16 starters......that seems like a 1st

race 4    average clarity

5  Counting Days   solid 1st ever on the Dmr AW in latest and it was off of a layoff.......smartly and deservedly steps up in claiming to avoid the claiming vultures lurking........likely feeling good........ran well stalking in latest and the same position looks likely today

1  Run Hide   claim back by Cerin seems dangerous as he seldom gives anything away at a bargain.....wanted this colt back.....rather usual and seems significant......decent chance to run/hide loose on the lead and with the bug boy and his weight break aboard

3  Jackson Sundown   decent history at a route......last seemed a little funky checking on the back stretch and running a little wide.......lone lifetime win came the only time this three year old was ever up for a for claiming today

7  Volkonsky

race 5    average clarity

5  Ashley's Sassy   wide trip on an inside track hides a decent MSW debut......and her trainer Peter Eurton is much better with 2nd time starters

9  Stormy Adieu   good AP trainer Ingrid Mason smartly ships a Cal-bred west following a solid 3rd in her MSW debut at Arlington........should be tough if the filly handles shipping and the transition all the way from Chi-town to Del Mar

2  I'll Tell You What   decent works prior and since her MSW debut which was so so......but......blinkers on and a rider upgrade......seems poised for a necessary move forward

10  Appealing Lady

race 6    average clarity

5  Pearl de Vere   seems best by far racing on the Del Mar AW (4 0 3 1) and doesn't have many opportunities left to run on it's synthetic surface before the track switches to conventional Eurton and company likely will pull out all stops to have this filly sharp for this race

2  Q' Viva   best ever in latest and it was her 1st ever on the Dmr AW.......and improved drill since.......more seems likely today and more fits just fine

8  Fly Freedom   lead type only has other speed to put away but if she does she might be difficult to rider/trainer combo the last couple of months

10  Bunuska

Long-shot consideration:   1  Tinkerbelle Tops   laid up about 15 months but won for fun in lone lifetime race at Emd.....good preparatory works and the trainer has been firing on all cylinders......seems dangerous and with lot's of potential

race 7    average clarity

10 AE  Skip Tony     big improvement in latest 1st out after the claim by was best ever on the AW......and........he seems better on the grass.......race lacks speed and he has some.....seems likely to get good early position

6  Christopher Street   decent first ever in a "marathon" grass race.......Mike Smith sticks around and right now that is a big plus as he has been magic on the sod of late

3  Bailoutbobby   toss out last as this gelding sat too far off of a lackluster pace to be able to close any in the stretch.......1 3/8ths seemed within his range......rebound can occur and most likely at a handsome price

1  Brother Pete

race 8    slight above average clarity

6  Salt Power    major league rider switch and for a runner who has fired par like efforts in his last two both of which were at Dmr.........Bejarano can be enough to get this gelding to the circle of joy

11  Gospel Music   so so effort in last..........but........big effort two back and if he rebounds to it today he sure seems like the one to overcome in this mdn20K......also.......6 1/2F seems like a good fit and it won't be for many in here

3  Hot Market   Dean Pederson is way above average when it comes to getting maiden claimers ready to win at 1st asking and he sure seems to have this three year old gelding ready to roll for his the 113 Flat drill on 10 August at Dmr

2  Forest Romance

4  Armensky

1  Ron's Boy
