Santa Anita for Saturday 27 September 2014

What a card. A true preview of the Breeders Cup coming up in five weeks. A 10 quality wise on the 1 to 10 scale. And on the same scale handicapping wise I would rate it an 8.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Wooram   47 to 1 in MSW debut says tune-up city........drops into maiden claiming following a debut where he flashed good early foot.........meant today

5  Original Rex   so so works for this O'Neill 1ster until his last 3 drills........getting good when it counts.......as in right before lifetime his debut

1  Better Luck      bad break and ran wide in a much improved 2nd lifetime start......switch in riders to Maldonado who is 7 for his last two dozen riding for Peter Miller......jock might bring better luck in start no. 3 for this baby

4  Guyfromtheskyfive

race 2    slightly below average clarity

1  Red N Black Attack   likes Santa Anita.......handles the somewhat specialty distance of 7F........seemingly in good form.......step up in claiming supports the notion

6  Blackford   Ron Ellis is very dangerous 1st out after a claim and especially the last couple of months or so where he has done little wrong with just about everything he puts on the track

3  Sir Barclay   sharp win at Lrc in last.......retains Bejarano..........1 for 1 sprinting on the SA dirt.......7F is a ? mark

9  Hidden Zensation

Long-shot consideration:   7  Luca   toss out last as it looked like a public work-out in a protected race......might be ready to run her effort 2 back .....and the race 2 back fits quite well here

race 3    average clarity

5  Conquest Two Step   seems very solid here if this Casse runner can handle his1st ever on the sod........considering he has handled multiple main track surfaces there is a good chance he will take to the SA hill despite only so so breeding for the sod

7  Betty's Bambino   good turf speed in this spot and proven on the majestic SA hill turf course.........should be in this affair from the get go and likely tough thru-out

4  Heat Flash   deep closer might need more pace than this race likely will yield but in S Cal that occurs quite often........more than any circuit I have ever dealt with for an extended period of time

3  Horse Laugh

race 4    slightly below average clarity

11  Madiba   solid MSW debut for this Hollendorfer colt........and all indications suggest he exited the race in great shape as he was able to work one week later and 3 times after that........more seems highly likely for 2nd lifetime start

2  Kantune   both lifetime efforts are par like races for what it takes on average to break your MSW in S Cal.........and in his latest he stalked a very fast pace and still closed late........and speed had a nice day yesterday

6  Oh Newman   nowheresville in latest but his MSW debut was good and somewhat hidden by a bad trip where he started badly but finished up strongly.......good connections........decent chance of a major rebound this afternoon

10  Bronze Star

Long-shot consideration:   8  Pretentious   checked early and ran a little wide in MSW debut.......went off at 15 to 1 so I doubt he was fully wound up.........trainer is much more prolific with 2nd time starers.......danger city today

race 5    above average clarity

4  Beholder   outstanding four year old filly is working as if she is more than happy to be home at SA where she is (8 7 1 0) and has two B C wins to her credit.......switch to Smith ......you think he wants to keep this mount with a stellar ride

2  Iotapa   likes the distance.......likes SA........still.........she will need her best ever (which is her race 2 back) or a dull performance or a bad trip from our top pick to take this

3  Yahilwa   plenty has to go right for this quality filly to upset here versus two multiple Grade 1 winners......still stranger things occur almost every race card in America daily

race 6   slightly above  average clarity

7  American Pharoah   blinkers off in 2nd lifetime start and boy did the equipment change work..........same effort produced today in his 1st endeavor on convention dirt and around two turns should be very tough for others in this field to overcome.......sure trains well on the "real thing"

4  Daddy D T   broke his maiden in his last in a $100K Stakes grass race.......sure appears as if the grass race muscled him up as his works on the SA dirt since suggest he is very fit and ready for this tough Grade 1

1  Texas Red   on the right end of the learning curve and proven around two turns......1st on conventional dirt but his pedigree says it should not be a hindrance

2  Lord Nelson

race 7    average clarity

7  Emollient   Bill Mott four year old filly sure is working better than ever and she is coming off of some bad trip efforts that should help her price today.......and.........I sure like her races at today's  1 1/4 mile distance

3  Moulin De Mougin   Richard Mandella sure is dangerous with improving runners which this filly surely is.........and the extra 1/8th for today sure appears as if it will be a plus........like our top choice she also has a very impressive set of preparatory drills

9  Irish Mission   Christopher Clement is very dangerous with shippers and he sure has this five year old mare in top form right now.......and she likes very firm turf.........welcome to S Cal......... where.......it is much more likely for the ground to shake than get any rain these days

8  Parranda

race 8    slightly above average clarity

4  Shared Belief   I thought this stellar Hollendorfer three year old gelding was the best two year old in the Country last year and that he is the best three year old in the Country this year ( sorry California Chrome fans of which I am one).........will have to dislike the SA dirt or go bad in the race not to be tough as nails here

2  Sky Kingdom   3 for 5 at SA.......2 for 11 on other surfaces.......and his recent 4F work at SA says he is happy to be back on his favorite surface

6  Majestic Harbor   one lifetime race fits here and it was run only 2 races back and at Santa Anita.......needs to rebound to that effort to have a shot

1  Fed Biz

race 9    average clarity

4  On The Backstreet   3 for 3 on the SA hill with all three wins coming by more than 2L........and the last two wins were $75K Stakes affairs just like today......that'll do

8  Stars Above Me   two wins and two 2nd's in 7 lifetime starts all on the sod in GB and USA despite many bad trips......a major player if this Saratoga shipper settles down today......top connections to get that accomplished

3  Alexis Tangier   Richard Mandella filly is two for two on the sod with one of the wins down the SA hill grass course........should be very fit coming off a route grass win and cutting back to this turf sprint

1  Wonderfully and 7  Kool Kat  ( a tie for 4th selection)

race 10    average clarity

2  Conquest Eclipse   ran a bit wide and only 3L off of a blistering half mile in last and still closed impressively late........handled conventional dirt at CD......bred well to get the 1 1/16th and her trainer Mark Casse historically is stout "1st time at a route" with a given horse

1  Sunday Sonnet   Saratoga shipper is on the right end of the learning curve and might feel really good coming off of a leg  her grass rote race........most likely leader in the race.......seems like a plus especially if we get yesterday's track

10  Dad's Princess   trainer has been very dangerous the last couple of months ......two year old filly greatly improved in last and she sure is bred well to get the added distance and two turns......good sign than "Mr. Stakes" Mr. Smith sticks around

6  Maybellene

Long-shot consideration:   12  Lutine Belle   very bad trip in 2nd lifetime race at GG hides a strong effort.......and the works since at GG are stout.......will need a very clever ride from a difficult post......but bombs away maybe if Solis gives one........and......you don't get a 30 to 1 ML on a Hollendorfer Stakes runner too often

race 11    slightly above average clarity

2  Nakamoto   proven on the grass........jock upgrade at least for a turf race........good post........seemingly never trained better........all systems go

7  Papacoolpapacool   good grass MSW debut and then showed even more in a $100K turf Stakes in start no. 2.......should be very tough back in a MSW........good turf trainer in Jeff Mullins

6  Miltee   bred terrifically for the grass........so that tells me his two races on the AW were tune-ups........gimme/gimme then go first time on the turf today

4  Borealis Breeze

9  Dream It Do It

10  Visitation
