Santa Anita for Thursday 2 October 2014

Seems like an OK card to start the new week of racing. Let's call it a 6 on the 1 to 10 scale. Friday's card looks quite good and likely will be rated an 8.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Bandido Too   seems extremely well meant today for Yakteen and company.......colt has been given a 6 week break and has put in a nice work regiment in the meantime........and he drops lower to score

2  Slapshot Man   DQ'ed from a win at the same maiden claiming level in last.......see you later jock.......new rider today........cold start to the meeting for O'Neill but he can start the ball rolling here

3  Empire Cat   believe all set to wake up today in 3rd lifetime start......bet hard in last but didn't fire..........but........blinkers off and a vastly improved recent drill.......believe fires this time around

7  Whoyougonnacall

race 2    average clarity

4  Valentine Boy   nice improvement in latest running off of short rest........all out bullet drill best of 99 worked 11 days ago......that should act like running off of "short rest" again...........seems like a smart maneuver by O'Neill

1  Zip Cat   good early gas here.......might be able to shake free even from the one hole.........and the cut back of one half of a furlong should be a plus

3  Nextdoorneighbor   away for over one year but works suggest he is ready.......and if he is he sure fits racing at the lowest level of his career

race 3    average clarity

6  Usbek Thunder   vastly better works of late......and the step up in claiming suggests the connections like what they see......five year old gelding has a shot to be the controlling speed in the race

4  Bardy   no betting at all in layoff last......that says the race was the gimme and the go go go (on the drop down of 2 levels) will occur this afternoon for this Hess/Desormeaux (quite the combo) runner

3  Cardio Royale   has always worked well on the conventional dirt at Santa Anita and finally gets to run on it........and Becerra and company drop this gelding down multiple levels and take the blinkers off following a failed effort with them on in his last

7  Thirtyfirststreet

race 4    average clarity

5  Stormy Adieu   both lifetime races are solid here in this soft looking field........both were on AW surfaces so there still is the question of whether or not this filly will run as well on the conventional dirt.......seems very formidable if she does

3  Party Rock   debut wasn't anything special but she did win and win rather easily........might need a little more today if our top choice handles the SA surface.....right connections to get it out of her

4  Easter Fever   moved forward in 2nd lifetime race and her work since hints she can move forward once again.....shot to take this if she does and handles her 1st race on conventional dirt

race 5    average clarity

3  Boller Bomb   vastly improved recent drill st Slr and drops multiple claiming levels.......believe Peter Miller means business here.....and this filly seems at her best on the SA grass and at the distance of one mile

5  Burns Turn   faced too tough in latest.....back where belongs today at the F & M $25K level

9  Toppers Sunshine   high win percentage on the grass when racing at 7 1/2 or 8 furlongs........8F today and drops with some solid a.m. preparation showing.......trainer has had a very successful year

8  Marina Del Heat

race 6    slightly below average clarity

3  He's Precocious   works hint this McAnally 1st timer will live up to his name.......very impressive work regiment put in at Bsr especially for a mid priced maiden claiming affair

8  Constantine   somewhat of an overdo drop for this Bob Baffert three year old gelding who should now be a major player at today's mdn50K level

5  Athens   turf tightener in last in a non claiming affair and it seems to have worked as he just popped a fast 5F drill on the SA dirt........back where belongs in a maiden claimer.......seems ready for best ever today

4  Intaxication

race 7    slightly below average clarity

9  Patriots Rule   highly competitive versus better in last 5 races 3 of which were on the grass......sharp very reassuring recent near bullet drill worked just 5 days ago.........should be tough even with a bad post with the rail 24 ft out

1  Ashleyluvssugar    last two races since switching to route racing on the AW at Del Mar are quite a bit better than par..........not much in only turf race was which a sprint.......turf route here and a good post.......deserves another shot at a turf route

8  Number Five   best finish of anyone in his last which was also a nw alw affair on the turf............solid 3 work series since......good grass trainer in Mullins......should be motoring fast in the late stages once again

6  I'll Wrap It Up

Long-shot consideration:   5  Wanstead Gardens   nice turf MSW breaking win in last his 2nd lifetime start.......tougher here for sure but his recent 6F drill hints the grass race muscled him up as only grass can do sometimes......needs more today and I believe he will provided it

race 8    slightly above average clarity

10  Steel Lady   very nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start.......good works since.......top gun Bejarano sticks around........same or better seems likely today

3  Our Love Affair   nice debut at Lrc on July 5th.......off since but worked a strong 1:11:3 at SA since.........seems about 60/40 proposition we see more this afternoon........and more would make her a major player

5  Fast Magoo   last two races fit and her latest was on conventional dirt albeit at Lrc........would have rated higher if it wasn't for only one work showing since her last and it is kind of dull........still.........works aren't everything
