Del Mar for Friday 7 November 2014 Hit a $411.80 cold trifecta in race 8

NOTE:   Change in clarity ratings starts today. Only going to use 3 levels of clarity from now on. They are as follows:

I like today's opening day card at Del Mar quite a bit so let us hope that the track plays fair on opening day. Let us call it an 8 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  She's Discreet   best effort/fig of career is her lone race at Dmr and it was her maiden two "dirt" races at SA were OK......likely to show more back on the Dmr AW this afternoon

5  Wild Caroline   five lifetime races to date and her best two efforts were the only two races she ran on the Dmr synthetic...........should welcome a return to it..........surface changes to convention dirt after 30 Nov. so I imagine that is the motivation to drop to the bottom (as in better win before it's too late)

7  Warren's Purrfect   both lifetime races on the Del Mar surface fit decently and they are both hidden by poor trips.........might come flying late with a smoother journey

2  Diamond Flush

race 2    above average clarity

5  Lucky J Lane   on the improve with every start and her last is hidden by a bad trip........see ya Smith - back to Nakatani........repeat of her latest even with a so so trip will still make her the one to overcome

7  Benba   6 for 6 on the board since Avila took over the training for this gelding........and the last time that this Avila runner had two months rest between starts he ran a strong winning effort...........two months rest for today and a solid work regiment

2  Unusually Green   best ever was the lone time this Mike Puype colt was able to run off of short rest and the race was at Dmr at today's 1 1/16th turf distance.......4 weeks since his last and that qualifies for short rest......well maybe not for Barry Abrams

3  Deep Play

race 3    above average clarity

2  Midnight Lady   good quite when she gets to run fresh..........10 weeks "fresh" ever was on the Dmr surface.......drop doesn't bother me much as she hasn't earned her keep since being claimed for $25K last February.......and....... her connections were most likely enticed by the race condition as $16nw3 races aren't cared very often

3  Adriatic Skye   seemingly needs the lead from the start in order to win (at least run well) and has a good chance at the front end early here

1  Clearly Anointed   back in the Paula Capestro barn (2% win %) after 4 races at Pid with another trainer........those four races fit fine here if of course Paula can get the same effort out of this four year old filly.......two recent drills at Slr hint she might

race 4    above average clarity

1  Oscillator   Periban five year old mare was quite consistent and stout last Fall & Winter and might be rebounding in form as she stepped up in her last and ran significantly better.........and........she steps up once again today

4  Eltoninadress   changes barns via the claiming box almost every race...........seems to thrive on the constant change in usual she should be in the race from the get go

3  Marla Hooch   cut back in distance sure appears to be a plus especially considering this three year old filly is 2 for 2 at the distance..........good rider/trainer combo in Hess/Desormeaux.........small drop doesn't bother me much...........only a small concern

5  J and S Express

race 5    average clarity

7  Smuggler Union   exits a fast heat with not the best of trips......impressive effort to only get beat by 3 1/2L.........solid works since...........1st on the grass but an interesting pedigree for it......and the trainer Howard Zucker is a decent conditioner of grass runners.......and 1st time Bejarano

9  Bolo   by my book no one is better in S Cal than Carla Gaines at getting 1st time starters to run at a high level when they debut routing on the grass........and she sure appears to have this colt all cranked up and more than ready...........and draws M Smith

1  Battle of Evermore   sharp efforts in all three lifetime starts and her latest was a better than par race down the SA hill turf course.....1st at a route on the sod today but owns a good pedigree for it and a good post in which to start

4  Armored Car

Long-shot consideration:   5  Kenjisstorm   1st on the sod but bred nicely for it.......colt has shown he can handle a route especially in his MSW debut 2 back where he was beaten by 5L versus a good group........and............ he was way too wide throughout

race 6   average clarity

7  Smooth Talker   long overdo drop for this filly who hasn't been close since breaking her MSW on the 4th of July 2013.......first on the Dmr AW but she has preformed well on other synthetic surfaces in the past.....back in 5 days rest but O'Neill (assistant D'Amato is training while he is serving a suspension) is dangerous running a horse off of micro-rest

5  Bird In Love   all three lifetime sprint races on the Dmr surface fit well here if of course this filly can handle her 1st route on the main track........GB bred filly has an OK pedigree to get the distance

4  Adellusion   would have been top pick if this was a sprint.........but.........this Baltas runner has something to prove at a route of ground.........but.......Bejarano and his agent must feel she will go 'long" as they stick with the filly..........and Baltas has won one third of his last 3 dozen "sprint to route" endeavors

3  Up The Alley

race 7    average clarity

1  Got Even   Peter Miller five year old gelding can handle plenty of early pace and still hang around late fairly he gets a race void of early speed so if Maldonado is able to slow him down early he should be one tough individual to catch in the late stretch as well as Maldonado does holding a speed horse together in the late stages

4  Ashleyluvssugar   three year old gelding has done little wrong in 6 lifetime starts and 4 of his starts are on the Dmr AW.......blinkers on two races back.........and both races run with them on are better than par for today's higher level.......also 1 for 1 with Mike Smith up

3  Toowindytohaulrox   three year old colt has been producing figs that fit fine here.......but.........he needs just a little more punch/desire in the late stages of his route races to get to the circle of joy as opposed to just being a "check get er"

race 8    average clarity

2  Queen of The Sand   rider upgrade back to Mike Smith who happens to be 2 for 2 on this filly......(4 2 1 1) at today's one mile turf distance.......way way too wide in last.......did extremely well to be 4 beaten lengths in a Grade 1.......nice work tab hints she has remained in good form

9  Gender Agenda    impressive in both of her starts in the good old U S of A and both efforts are better than appear in print.......nearly won a small Stakes down the hill in latest despite running wide.......and in the race 2 back he produced a poor winning fig as the fractions were very slow which makes for a final time that is of course slow and basically should be ignored

5  Kathleen Rose   consistent sort (and with a front running style) routing on the grass and all eight route(8 4 3 1) grass races have been at today's one mile distance........would have rated higher if she didn't have to cope with the 7 horse who also likes the front end of things and has speed rider Maldonado up

1  Bee Brave

race 9    average clarity

8  Heat The Rocks   both lifetime races are better than par when adjusted for any pace or bad position......and this Hollendorfer two year old filly seemingly catches a soft bunch

5  Chexcess   bad trip-a-roo in MSW debut 2 back hides a good effort......not sure what occurred in start number 2 which was bad I doubt it took anything out of the filly if she exited the race in decent guess is she did as she is back in short rest and doesn't drop........and stout Euro jock Fallen is up

4  Scuti de Patuti    some works of merit for this 1st timer......might be ready to roll well enough to compete in this weak looking field (outside of the top choice)

1  Bad Ju Ju

10  Canned Heat

9  Stipend
