Santa Anita for Friday 26 December 2014

Three straight days of large fields and plenty of quality to start the prestigious Winter/Spring Meeting at Santa Anita. Then two days off and five more days of racing next week Wednesday through Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

11  Justonemorething   on the improve both final time wise and pace wise.......like the switch to Van Dyke and his 5 lbs weight break

7  Hot Lightning   another on the improve........and just snatched at the claiming box by Alfredo Marquez........sharp 4F work at SA since the claim and the fact that Bejarano accepts the mount hint the two year colt is doing well for his new trainer

1  Howdy   2 strong races on the AW at Dmr......not so hot on conventional dirt in 2 races on it........has something to prove at SA or would have rated higher

3  Guyfromtheskyfive

Long-shot consideration:   5 Doc Charney     improving with each and every race but still needs quite a bit more especially with the step up in maiden claiming........might deliver it as this is the 1st time he gets to run off of short rest in 4 lifetime starts.....and his trainer has won 3 of his last 12 stepping up in class

race 2    average clarity

6  Aperfectdaytofly   seems likely to sit in a nice stalk or mid pack position that I project will be a lively pace......handles SA and six furlongs appears to be an excellent fit

5  Como Mi Padre    another who appreciates the SA surface........away since Ellis claimed in late May but fits solidly if he returns fit and ready........60/40 that he is

8  Vegas Street   nice run 1st out following the Tim Yakteen claim and against slightly better........handles SA and is sharp in the a.m......... colt seems likely to make a good account of himself this afternoon

2  Divine Vision

race 3    average clarity

6  Captain Carchy   all 3 lifetime sprints are better than appear in print......and this Mike Puype two year old seemingly has never trained better........likely will be motoring late unless a pedestrian pace develops

8  Jet Trick   nice move forward with 1st time Bejarano in latest......and improved works since hinting similar or better will occur this afternoon

3  Hurry Up Henry   takes the ever dangerous drop from MSW racing to low level mdn claiming............trainer has popped with 5 of his last 15 1st time running in a maiden claimer

1  Jimbaran Bay

race 4    above average clarity

4  Steam Play   impressive route in latest running a nasty fast 2nd 1/4 and still managing to hang on for 2nd...........should have plenty in the tank to finish well cutting back to a sprint for today

7  Micks Miracle   sharp work tab for this D'Amato 1ster......tightly spaced intervals and some works of merit........rather sure this colt issszzzzzz.......meant and ready

1  Wabel   good MSW debut for this Baffert colt at Lrc both in final time and pace........might be selected too low if he runs as well at SA especially with Mr. Joel Rosario aboard

11  Ideal

race 5   below average clarity

3  Mal Verde   three year old gelding needs plenty of time off between starts and gets it........so....... you know John Sadler will have him ready to roll fresh as it will be some time before he will likely compete again.........(4 2 1 1) on the turf and 1 for 1 at the distance

8  Wanstead Gardens   just fired lifetime best 1st time racing on the grass at today's distance of 1 1/8th.......very impressive stretch run.....retains Joel Rosario.....such a deal

9  Bench Light   last time this gelding ran at today's allowance level (not up for a tag) he won by more than 6L........so if he has remained in good health he is rated too low........but I am somewhat skeptical that he has being put up for $40K today.......rate it 40/60 he is in relatively good condition

7  Christopher Street

race 6    average clarity

1  Travis   4 for 4 sprinting (and at 4 different tracks) with the average winning distance over 8 lengths.......yikes.......and the three year old filly is training exceptional well for his new conditioner Simon Callaghan

9  Sam's Sister    mid pack runner gets to face an abundance of sizzling fast front running types and they will likely bang heads early.......should come flying late if that occurs.......lifetime best was lone effort at SA and it was at today's somewhat specialty distance of 7 panels

3  Thank You Marylou   another off pace runner that likely motors late in this spot......like the change in jocks to Rosario.....well proven at today's 7F distance

10  Jojo Warrior

Long-shot consideration:   5  Ramona's Wildcat   deservedly steps up into a Grade 1 off of some impressive sprints versus easier........done little wrong in 3 lifetime one turn sprints on the dirt

race 7    average clarity

4  Alert Bay   very consistent sort has never been sharper and has a good shot at getting a nice stalk or mid pack ground saving trip behind what ought to be one lively pace

7  Heart to Heart    4 for 4 on firm turf with the smallest margin of victory being 3 lengths......so why not top selection?.....because he appears to be a "lead type only" and he faces one quick sprinter attempting to go long for the first time in the 2 horse

1  Patriot's Rule   deep closer who always seems to fire owns some solid back numbers and multiple impressive bad trip efforts..........horse probably is difficult to ride but it's about time his regular rider Fernando Perez gets more out of him with a good trip

10  Long On Value

race 8    average clarity

8  Shared Belief   it took a Roller Derby trip for this fine colt to finally get beat.......believe today's race will be the final factor to determine who will be the "Horse of the Year"..........so you know that he will be well prepared for today's race by Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer

2  Chitu   par like efforts in 3 of his last 4 races and seemingly never any sharper..........a par effort likely won't be good enough to beat our top pick unless he has a bad trip or a bad day.........but.........this colt might be up for even better than par today off of a brilliant work tab

5  Pimpernel   3 for 5 at SA and 1 for 1 at the somewhat specialty distance of 7F.......needs best ever this afternoon and by quite a bit.........but.........he has never come close to training as well as he is for today's significant step up

7  Tamarando

race 9    average clarity

2  Satin Cinnamon   was closing nicely in latest...........then she was blocked and checked badly on turn 2 and the stretch...........rank and wide in previous grass race........quite hidden and quite dangerous at a price if she displays the same effort and gets a decent trip-a-roooo

5  Scattagirl   showed a liking for the sod in SA turf sprint debut........showed she can handle two turns to some extent in latest on the Del Mar AW.......seems highly likely to save some ground near the front end of things

3  Dea   major league rider upgrade for today..........37 to 1 in MSW debut for a Casse runner strongly suggests the race was a public work-out and more can be expected this afternoon from this filly if of course she handles the sod
