Santa Anita for Wednesday 31 December 2014

Decent card today to maybe keep the good times rolling. Thursday's card is a different story as it was very hard to decipher in a great majority of the races. Friday's appears good.

Ironically the nasty cards to handicap take me more time to study which is frustrating but sometimes yield good days (but with little confidence and conviction) I guess because of the additional time that I have to put in.

Best of luck as always & Happy New Year!

race 1    average clarity

Note: no change in selections if races are taken off the turf

2  Enduring Erin   1 1/8th seems like it will be a good fit.....finally draws a good post following 2 straight outer-most post starts ( Note: I like this filly even more if this race ends up being on the main track)

3  Backintheacademy   distance fits and it might be a little too far for quite a few in this affair.......solid turf race in latest with the blinkers taken off.........would have been top choice if it wasn't for her tendency to hang in the stretch

7  Lethal Story   very consistent (but often too late) deep deep closer has been training markedly better lately........likely needs more heat up front than there appears to be but look-out if she gets it

5  Nighttiming

race 2    above average clarity

7  Eltoninadress   as consistent of a cheap female claimer as you will ever see.....and she is at her best at SA (12 4 5 3)......that'll do

3  Peppy Bolly   bad trip in last hides this mare's form to some extent.......takes a suspicious drop.......but.........she did work (one week ago) a reassuring 3F drill since her last

6  It's Aine   loves the Lrc surface that's for sure......has more to prove on the SA main track.......but she sure crushed (at only one claiming notch lower) with the blinkers put on......deserves one more shot at SA with the blinkers?

1  Tribal Peace

race 3   average clarity  (11 or 14 have a solid shot if get in from the AE list)

Note: If the races are taken off the turf  selections are 3-4-14-11-6

3  Nicegirlsfnishlast   lifetime best effort/fig (and caliber of competition) was her only start down the majestic SA hill grass course......needed layoff last.....should be ready to roll today........only mount for Mike Smith on the card......seems significant

4  Spy Girl    appears to be the most likely leader and likely dangerous if allowed to set a reasonable pace........Peter Miller is quite dangerous 2nd time on the lawn with a given horse which is the case here

9  Celibataire   away since Halloween (shows up on New Years Eve - whats next?  Valentines Day) when she showed some ability on the AW at GG.......good preparatory works and an outstanding grass pedigree bodes well for today's race down the hill

8  Taylor Lane

race 4    average clarity

4  Awe Gee   done little wrong in 3 lifetime conventional dirt sprints and all withl today's rider Pedroza pace running style seems like a good fit in this affair with multiple speed types

6  Cruisingtheharbor   drop down is suspicious but possibly Peter Miller believes this filly isn't nearly as good on real dirt than the AW so he feels a drop is necessary.......only race on the "real thing" is very poor but then again it was her only route race........was it the route of ground or surface.........too many ? marks or would have been top pick

9  Natalie's Wonder   on the improve but likely needs to avoid a speed duel one way or another or she likely will have little left in the tank in the late stages......solid rider up to get that accomplished

8  Take Back Spring

race 5   average clarity

3  Cool Roger   away from the game for 1 3/4's years but takes the ever dangerous drop out of MSW racing to the bottom level maiden claiming......and returns as a 1st time gelding with decent drills........faces a soft looking group.......good start to the SA meeting for Gaines

13  Undergroundrailroad   not crazy about some of the gaps in the work regiment but this new shooter does own a couple drills of merit and as mentioned above this is weak maiden 20K and thus a good spot for a 1st timer

6  Majestic Charlie   another taking that eye popping drop from MSW racing to mdn20K.....both lifetime races fit fine but I am a touch leery of her conditioner as after riding 2 top echelon riders they switch to a low % jock when they need to win with the thread of being claimed

7  Setthebigboysfree

race 6    above average clarity

3  The Gomper   visually impressive winning his MSW debut from off the pace and with a hand ride late in the stretch........the hot pace did set things up nicely for him in his debut but it looks as if he lucks out and gets another hot pace today

8  Serbian Syclone   crushed foes in 2nd lifetime start on the AW at Del Mar......colt has something to prove on conventional dirt but if his stout works at Slr are any indication he will handle the SA dirt just fine

2  Gambler's Roll   rider upgrade for today and a hot trainer rider combo in D'Amato/Bejarano.......copious furlongs of work put in since his last start on the which was on the 1st day of guess is they will take back some in this race which would be a wise move with the abundance of front runners in this affair

7  All Indians

race 7    average clarity

Note:  If the races are taken off the turf the selections are 4-5-11-10-9

3  A Little Luckier   trainer is off to a good start at the SA meeting and looks like he can keep the ball rolling here with a good claim at GG of a 32K filly...........and folks an open $32 filly fits well in a state-bred nw's alw race.......excellent aggressive work series at the 6F drill just 4 days ago.......Hollendorfer has this filly sharp

7  Chati's On Top   very consistent on the grass even though has yet to win (4 0 2 2).......just missed versus open company in last - back against Cal-breds today......3 reassuring works since her last hints she has held her good form

2  Frandontjudge   resurrected and improving runner since switching to the sod......fits fine with another move in the desired direction

4  Casey's Clem

race 8    average clarity

5  Bad Behavior   away since April but returns as a 1st time gelding and is training great for Baffert......3 of his 4 lifetime races are quite solid here especially his last which was run way back on April 11th where he ran wide on a rail bias up on the pace.....superior effort to hold 2nd

4  Spring Action   finally sprints again (and on conventional dirt) where he ran his lifetime best in his maiden debut 6 races back at CD......and might be ready for best as Spawr is 12 of his last 25 route to sprint and that is the scenario here

6  Next Right   strong work tab for this Glatt runner who is a 1st time gelding and who is dropping out of MSW racing into a maiden claimer for the 1st time.....and he draws Gary Stevens which says he is meant and ready fresh as Stevens and his agent are very selective taking limited mounts

3  Arlington House

7  Arctic Cold

12  Gold Chase
