Santa Anita for Thursday 8 January 2015

OK card to start the new week. Let's call it a 6.5 on the 1 to 10 scale. Best looking single of the day for your rolling exotics appears to be our top pick in the 4th race.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Lolo El Canonero   only deep closer in the field and he gets to navigate thru only five foes come crunch time.......drop makes sense as he has only earned chump change since arriving in the good old U S of A early last year

3  Bother Soldier   blinkers taken off in a non-claiming event sure appears to be a gimme for this gelding's 1st out with Baltas as the trainer......seems like a full go today dropping into a conditioned 25K claimer............very impressive a.m. work since his last

4  Test Ride   definitely has some health issues so drops........dangerous if he has another run left in him........back to Desoreaux hints that he might.......rate it a 40/60 chance that he does

race 2    average clarity

4  Power Foot  best ever was his last and it was his 1st running at today's 1 1/2 mile marathon distance.......impressive to finish a 4L beaten 4th versus tons tougher

1  Bench Light   beaten by our top pick 2 races back but moved forward in latest and he sure ran a couple of strong 1 3/8th grass races last summer

7  Big Kick   obviously needs a rebound in health......if he is back in decent health this is a spot that fits as he needs the lead and seems likely to get it in this spot.....both races run last June at SA would take this

race 3    below average clarity

1  Sweet Pizazz   4 wide trip in last on a day the 1 and 2 path were shot to strut her stuff running in the quicksand.....drops two levels and is one for one at SA.....trainer knows how to win races

5  Yesterday Sings   improving four year old filly and today she gets to race at what appears to be her favorite surface

6  Warren's Assassin   reliable late runner in sprint races on conventional dirt........and I like the switch to the bug boy and his weight break.......should be motoring late

8  Goof Proof

race 4   above average clarity

7  Chicsdigtheshark   pushed out wide on turn one.....up close to a hot pace........wide on turn two some as well.......did well to grab 3rd.....drops below where Miller snatched him for 2 races back.......same effort as his last with an OK trip and he will be very tough here

4  The Great Caper   won on the grass in latest at a higher claiming price but essentially at the same par level as today's $8K claimer.........only race at SA on the dirt was off the board but the fig sure fits well here

5  Broadway Nika   last win came two races came off of very short rest of 8 days........back in 7 days this time following a non-claiming event over his head..........hmmm

2  Unmatched Force

race 5   average clarity

8  Forest Chatter   solid efforts in both lifetime starts and his last was on the sod at Dmr.......tightly spaced drills since likely has this Mandella four year old all wound up and ready for another strong effort........good sign Mike Smith sticks with the gelding for a 3rd straight time

9  Odin   off nearly a year following an uneventful MSW debut on 10 Jan 2014 and then this Kruljac five year old sure returned to racing as a vastly different significantly better racehorse.......not only improved drastically fig wise but pace wise as well.......same effort today and he will be a major player here

7  Tizapalooza    ran better than his two lifetime career races would indicate.........his 1st was down the SA hill like today and in that race he broke slow and was rank early falling back in a race with a slow pace........did well to get beat by only 3 1/ 6 weeks since his layoff last but the works are good especially for Jones who doesn't push them too hard in the a.m.

4  Couldashouldadid

race 6    average clarity

5  Bow Tie Belle   drops to win or "claim me please".......I'm leaning 60/40 on drops to win and if she is any of her last four races would be tough here

8  Here's Bella   last three races on conventional dirt fit fine......seems well placed to win at a level that fits......capable of rating and that seems like a plus in this spot with plenty of gas

7  Spoiledandentitled   deep closer gets a trainer upgrade and drops one level......not impossible considering all the early heat in this cheap claimer and at the distance of 7 furlongs

4  Sunday Stroll

race 7    average clarity

6  Baruta   ultra consistent grass runner scratched out of a Grade 2 last weekend to run in this softer spot.....when a good Cal barn does such a move it has been amazing how successful they have been since I have been handicapping the S Cal racing scene.......might be a leak or two in the racing office

2  Spelling Again   both lifetime wins came "fresh"...........fresh today and for Graham Motion is often at his best with "fresh' runners..........1st on the sod but bred just fine to take to it

9  Air of Royalty   likely loose in this spot and the two times this mare was on a loose lead she won by 6L and ran a 2nd.........dangerous especially with jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard who is a good speed rider

3  Royal Temptress

race 8    average clarity

2  Slewpy Again   connections drop to the bottom level maiden claimer off of a five month layoff and with very strong drills especially for Sherlock who really doesn't work them too hard in the a.m.........seems rather sharp and ready fresh

8  Undrground Railroad   OK mc debut last.........especially considering the race was run at 7F which is never easy for a 1st timer to cope with........cut back of one furlong seems like a plus for today

1  Preordained   layoff last fits fine here and the effort would make him a major player if he can duplicate the fact he would have been top selection if both the rider and trainer didn't struggle so much in S Cal

6  El Monterey

10  Militant

4  Rahy's Shadow
