Santa Anita for Monday 19 January 2015

Nice race card to finish the extended weekend. Let's call it an 8 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

7  Pica   laid up since May but awfully consistent.........training very sharply..........and her trainer is on a roll especially of late when he rides Espinoza.......should be able to range up from the outside with as good of speed as anyone in the field

3  Free Money    Hollendorfer like Miller is also quite hot and the outstanding trainer drops this filly off of a decent effort well disguised by a tough trip.........rider upgrade to boot

1  Meinertzhageni   Bonde has woken up from the doldrums and gets Bejarano to ride.........last time Bejarano rode this filly was at SA way back on Feb 17th and the filly ready that day........but she was greatly compromised by a bad trip (broke badly and ran wide)........seeing that the top jock is back up I imagine this filly is doing great (off the 7 week layoff) like she was on that mid Feb race

race 2    average clarity

1  Peaches n' Brandy   part of Peter Miller's success is that he isn't afraid to lose a horse and that applies here........young filly is placed well to win coming of her 2nd start where she broke her maiden

8  Desert Thief   decent history running on conventional dirt and that includes Santa Anita.......small drop in claiming helps as does the cut back of one half furlong

5  Awe Gee   plenty of speed in this affair might set things up for this off pace three year old filly who has shown some late kick in all four of her lifetime conventional dirt sprints

7  Where Is My Mind

race 3    above average clarity

5  Fantastic Style   powerful MSW debut run 23 days ago.....and since Baffert has put in two decent maintenance works hinting she exited her race in good shape........same or of course better today and she is definitely the one to overcome

7  Stella Moon   Cerin is not much with MSW 1st timers usually but the a.m. prowess for his youngster is too hard to ignore........and I like that that this filly trained out of town (sent fit) until Cerin took over in December

8  Never Ends   plenty of foundation put into this Hollendorfer 1st timer who is very dangerous with young fillies making their debut.........the way in which this filly is training makes me believe she will come from off the pace

10  Avenge

race 4    average clarity

3  Well Measured   four year old has fired to some degree in all 5 lifetime starts.........1st on sod but bred well to take to it......so so route pedigree but the way in which he handled 7F suggests one mile will be within his range

1  Mal Verde   consistently in the mix in all 5 lifetime grass races.......1st grass race at one mile today but considering he has been competitive at 1 1/8th and at 6 1/2F on the grass one mile might be a Goldilocks "juuusssssssst right" situation

6  Home School   runs well fresh sometimes..........10 weeks "fresh" today...........fits fine here if he is up to his "A game"........like the switch to 1st time Kent Desormeaux

7  Wrightwood

race 5   above average clarity

4  Sam's Sister   Hollendorfer scratched this filly out of a Grade 2 Saturday which he won with another filly........that and the fact this filly is 4 for 4 in main track sprints (including 2 at 7F) makes her the one to beat by my book

6  My Sweet Addiction   best ever was her last which was run way back in Oct........the race was at SA and at today's 7F distance........runs well fresh as Baffert has to have her ready as she takes a beating when she runs and needs plenty of time off to recover

7  Sweet Marini   appreciates the somewhat specialty distance of 7F and sure seems to be in top form.......but I am slightly concerned that she has only run one good race at SA in three races......still 3 races is a small sample

race 6    average clarity

3  Dead Easy   best ever was run two back which was his only effort ever down the SA hill.......he ran wide and was still only beat by 2L at 46 to 1.........has run well fresh in the past.......training well and today gets a major league rider upgrade.......should be motoring late

8  Guggenheim   John Shirreffs seems to do well well his stock returning from the Big Apple.....that is the case here for this colt attempting the turf for the 1st time.........bred just fine to handle it

10  Clickjab   seems to be improving one baby step at a time for Gary Mandella........as good a shot as anyone in this affair if the trend continues

4  Bellamy Concerto

Long-shot consideration:   6  Relative Time   seems to respond only to the turf and only when he runs with ample time off........gets both today.......sharp in a.m.......likely to go off one big price

race 7    average clarity

3  Reno Rebel   my guess is Miller means business with four year running for the same tag of $40K as he claimed him for as I think that he surmises that the horse will be claimed from him (kind of a rent-a-runner)........retains Bejarano and with the 3 post I believe the meets top gun will put him on the lead in this route race just as he did in a sprint win in his last

2  Catch a Flight   best set of preparatory works for an overseas Mandella invader in quite some time.........five year old was 5 for 5 on main track surfaces (albeit tracks rated good or heavy) in Brazil winning by an average of seven lengths

5  Solid Wager   surprised me that this Miller off pace runner took well to his 1st dirt route race with a winning and decent effort........last with a good trip might do the trick here as well

7  Little Curlin

race 8    average clarity

3  Gold Chaser   on the improve and the connections sure lucked out not getting claimed in last......1st on the sod but bred to handle it.......jocks 2 for his last 3 for the trainer

10  Smokey Legacy   wide trip in last or would have won today's level of racing in an affair at Lrc at one mile on the dirt.......like our top choice 1st on the sod..........in this case let's call an adequate pedigree for the green stuff

7  Yes Yes Yes    horrendous trip in last wide on the pace........did well to hang on for 4th........proven on the grass and prior to his lone race down the SA hill back in June he broke thru the gate......not a good thing.....and still ran 3rd

6  Sir Macho

Long-shot consideration:  1  Hidden Zensation    on the improve and his last is disguised by dueling on a dull rail and doing so while dealing with a stout set of fractions.......best lifetime race by my book........toss out only grass race as it was a route and he appears to dislike two turns

race 9    average clarity

5  Follow Me Crev   plenty of positives:  drops out of MSW racing.......1st time gelding.......cut back route to 7F......sharp in the a.m.......a superfecta of good stuff

6  Donji   nice forward move with the blinkers off in last......and he finished up at 6 1/2 furlongs as if the 1/16th more for today will be a good thing

4  Julia's Summer   very tightly spaced drills should have this 1st timer wound up and ready to roll.....trainer Velasquez is 2 for his last 9 with mc 1st timers and with a very positive return for your money

8  Yoked

9  Sunshine Bandit

1  Book Thirty Four
