Santa Anita for Saturday 24 January 2015

Very nice card. A pleasure to handicap. Let's hope it is a pleasure to wager on as well. I do rate it high as in a 8 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

8  Howdy   last race fits......and it was his only lifetime race sprinting on the dirt with blinkers..........today's cut back of one furlong from 7F to 6F looks as if it will be a plus

7  Grazen Sky    nice improvement in his latest his 2nd lifetime start and 1st on conventional dirt..........off 7 weeks........but.........the colt has shown enough in the a.m. to make me believe that Myadi is bringing him back in the similar shape which would make him a major player here

6  Signature Cat   very strong MSW debut last August at the prestigious and tough to break your maiden Saratoga meeting......nowheresville in next two starts......away enough time (3 months) to recover and his a.m. work suggests that he has......appears to be the most likely leader in the race........dangerous even with low % (in S. Cal) jock and trainer

5  Rhett's Image

race 2    average clarity

5  Trash Talkin   Mike Puype seems due for a "good one" and this four year old 1st timer is training more impressively than any 1ster that he has put on the track in quite some time.......rather sure this one is meant and ready

4  Alfiero   Ellis 1ster is also rather impressive in the morning and the stout trainer who often isn't in a hurry developing a young appears to be here........bullet gate work on 2 Jan appears to be extremely strong

3  This Time I Win   Ron Ellis colt might live up to his name as Ellis is very dangerous with 2nd time starters that show a little something in their debut which this four year old did

2  Seedsandstemsagain

race 3    average clarity

5  Forest Chatter   four year old gelding is developing nicely and really took to the Santa Anita Hill awfully well........repeat of the race will make him tough in this spot and if he moves forward it will take a poor trip to stop him from ending up in the circle of joy

2  Lindante    lifetime best run two races back was run off of two months rest and was on the SA hill...........running off of two months rest today and he just popped a 4F bullet work only 4 days ago indicating he feels great and when it counts the most..........as in right before he is about to race

10  Gangnam Guy   does his best running on the SA hill but still might need his lifetime best to win this affair........might give it as his recent a.m. prowess hints he has never felt better

11  Do Some Magic

race 4    average clarity

5  Chief of Staff   lone lifetime race which was run in Washington at Emd in September is decent.........running 2nd to a good horse........away since and lands in the red hot Hollendorfer barn..........and Jerry H. has him training as if all systems are go for lifetime start number 2

6  Vodka Texted You   good work regiment for this Machowsky 1st timer with both speed and endurance put into his new shooter.......trainer and rider have teamed up with some decent success the last coupled of months

3  Stormin Trick   no shot in MSW debut.......broke poorly and rushed up into a decent set of fractions and rightly tired early.........two solid drills since........might be on the lead with a clean exit from the gate this time around......dangerous 2nd time starter

8  McHeat

race 5   average clarity

4  Heat the Rocks   developing Hollendofer filly has handled dirt and synthetic, sprint and route.......so........considering her decent grass pedigree I doubt the transition to turf will be a problem

6  Light One   another Hollendorfer runner trying the grass for the 1st time that has a pedigree that suggests she should handle it.........very game in her two lifetime efforts both run at GG.......nice bullet 6F drill at GG just 5 days ago.........sharp sharp sharp

5  Sure Pleasure   crushed her competition in her MSW debut back in mid December at Lrc......hasn't missed a beat in the morning since.......believe she is a good horse but her pedigree for turf and distance is only so so..........seems likely in the hunt from the get go if she does take to the green carpet

1  Patsy G and Me

race 6    above average clarity

2  Acceptance   colt has impressed me in all 3 lifetime starts........showed he can handle decent pace and still fire a very strong two turn race.......few can so early in their three year old season.......continues to train like a happy healthy individual

7  Pulmarack   did extremely well to only lose by 3L to our top selection in his latest ..........had about 10L of trip and pace adjustment as to compared to about 7L for our top pick........set a very fast set of fractions in his MSW win two back......jock might send this time around and try and get the jump on our top selection

1  Tough Sunday   on the improve and bred just fine to get the added distance and the two turns.........not impossible if our top two picks lock horns and duel one another into oblivion

5  Kluszewski

race 7    average clarity

7  Go West Marie   last was quite impressive in that she won easily in decent time at a route with 1st time Stevens...... and ........she definitely appears to be a better sprinter than a router........might be sitting on career best and she retains the services of Gary Stevens

6  Heavens Stairway   4 for 5 on the SA hill turf course and capable of performing well on, near or off of the pace.....love that versatility........and I love her recent bullet 4F drill one week ago......Marty Jones seemingly has her primed for her very best

4  Velvet Mesquite   hard to argue with 5 for 7 down the SA hill.......and........ she has been beaten quite a few of today's foes in the past

14  Heat Trap

race 8    average clarity

2  San Onofre   3 for 4 at SA......2 for 2 at 6F............fabulous work tab..........and outside of his MSW the only time he ran fresh (off of 10 1/2 months) he won by 10L......away 11 months this time around

3  Rousing Sermon   versatile six year old woke up nicely in the 1st sprint he had run in many a moon........away for 2 months but has put in a solid prolonged work series in preparation for today........seems likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip and with plenty of pace up front to soften things up for his stretch run

9  Spirit Rules   six year old has shown he can run fresh in the past..........gets to run at his best distance........might get a nice cozy mid pack or stalk position behind three speed types.........decent trainer/rider combo

4  Frensham

race 9    average clarity

9  Boozer   best early speed in the field and Stevens has plenty of real estate to work with from the 9 post with the long run-up at the 1 1/8th mile turf distance......last two times this Glatt five year old ran as far as 1 1/16th he won going away at the wire......that hints he can handle the extra 1/16th for today and that it might even be a plus

7  Awesome Return   1 for 1 at today's distance and in general a very reliable runner on the sod (8 4 1 3) .......same goes for the rider these days......and Puype/Desormeaux are a hot trainer/rider combination the last couple of months.......3 for their last 5

3  Alert Bay   very consistent sort seemingly has never been sharper and has a good shot at getting a nice ground saving trip as he did (for the most part) in his last winning as our top pick at 9 to 1

2  G. G. Ryder

Long-shot consideration:   4  Patriots Rule   I have nothing against Fernando Perez ........he is a competent rider but on this horse he has given countless bad rides........might be the horse but than again why on earth wouldn't the connections give another jock a chance to ride this gelding who displays plenty of run but runs way too wide race after race.......maybe Perez will attempt to save some ground today at least thru turn one - as what do you have to lose versus a tough group of competitors

race 10    average clarity

11  Powerful Girl   red hot rider/trainer combo and an improving maiden claimer.......ran 2nd in her latest and the filly that ran 3rd came back to win her next out

6  She Got Away   on the right end of the learning curve and if the trend continues this afternoon (and she handles the extra 1/2 furlong) she might be the one to beat

5  Lady Danger   toss out the up the track route effort in her latest as she was caught wide on a rail bias day......previous two races fit fine......and Bejarano and his agent want the mount
