Santa Anita for Thursday 12 February 2015

Decent card to start five straight days of racing. Our top two selections in five of the eight races does not include the morning line favorite. I always appreciate that.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Belonging   2 for 4 at SA on the dirt (1 for 9 on other surfaces)..........cut back in distance should be a plus.........last two of three dirt wins came turf to dirt which is today's scenario..........rider upgrade

7  Spirit of Ten   seems like a good claim by Glatt as this filly moved forward in her last.......trainer is stout 1st after a claim and especially when he shows a decent work for his new shooter........solid 4F work just 5 days ago

6  Lust for Life   yet to miss the board in 4 endeavors on the SA dirt..........filly seems a little better "short" than "long" or would have rated higher........but then again Baltas sure is good getting horse's to "get" two turns

4  Room for Me

race 2    above average clarity

4  Forever Juanito   sure appreciates the SA hill grass course and has a decent history back in short rest........and 18 days since his latest absolutely qualifies as "short rest"

2  U S Citizen   seemingly never better and like our top selection he has an affinity for the SA hill........jock/trainer have scored with their last 4 of 5 as a team

1  Holy Lute   last fits solidly (nice win 1st on the hill and 1st time with Bejarano) and might be the best speed in this affair.........but oddly back to Mike Smith who is 0 for 5 on the five year old.......Hall of Fame rider will be out to make it 1 for 6

race 3    average clarity

2  Burning   consistent sort for a cheap maiden trainer in Miller........cut back route to 7 panels is usually a plus especially when a given horse has shown he can handle the (somewhat a specialty) distance

7  Salt of the Earth   seems best at 7F and I like the switch in riders considering the weight break of 7 lbs for the apprentice.........and then there is that route to 7F maneuver which is often a very good thing

4  City State   long overdo drop to the lowest mc level available.......owns a nice back number/effort at SA on the dirt and might be up to the effort as Jerry Fanning's five year old just popped a 4F best of 53 bullet work seemingly out of nowhere

6  Steel Dragon

race 4    above average clarity

3  Toomanytomatoes   two of her better lifetime efforts came the only two times this mare ran on conventional dirt.........and her trainer Ed Moger is good route to sprint and turf to dirt.....both of which are the case here

5  Adellusion   filly made a rebound of sorts in her latest......7F seems like a good fit......retains Bejarano for a fifth straight time.....last sure fits......and if her rebound continues she would be the one to beat

7  L and S Express   beat our 2nd pick by a nose and most of her career fits solidly here..........rider upgrade.........likely to get a nice stalking position........would have rated higher if she wasn't (3 0 0 0) at the distance of 7 furlongs........still........she is dangerous here

6  Zee Chris

race 5   average clarity

7  Loufoque   laid up since August but sure is showing enough a.m. prowess to believe she is ready fresh..........only route turf race is very strong and disguised by a brutal trip........even with the very bad journey she finished 2nd at one mile on the grass in her two year old year........if you can get one mile at 2 (impressively) you likely can handle 1 1/8th at 4........and especially with a solid long distance pedigree

5  Purple Rose  strong efforts in both lifetime starts which were routes.........and her debut run was on the that turf effort (like our top selection) she had a bad trip-a-rooo

1  Nicegirlsfnishlast  on the right end of the learning curve and I believe the trend can continue.......would have rated higher if I wasn't a touch leery about her getting the 9F without flattening out some in the late stages

3  Egyptian Empire

race 6    average clarity

8  Southeast Asia   all for races under the auspices of Barry Abrams fit well here including his last which was his first out since returning from the Big Apple where he did little with a low % trainer.......turf effort in last seems to have muscled this fellow up some as his recent 4F drill is solid

10  Rocker Heat   no shot in MSW debut (likely a gimme anyway) as he ran a little too wide on a rail biased day and up on the pace.....that effort fits here at today's much lower level......and..........he was also gelded since his debut.......very dangerous

12  Price of Glory   2 of his last 4 races fit well at today's lower level which includes his latest........and he put in a sharp 4F work since.....same or maybe even better seems likely today

11  Guyfromtheskyfive

race 7    average clarity

2  Ramona's Wildcat   not sure why on earth this O'Neill runner was competing in high level Graded races in her last two but they sure can be tossed out (ignored).........and now her recent drills are vastly improved seemingly out of nowhere........all set for a form reversal today

6  Temple   fresh speed can be very dangerous and this Hollendorfer five year old mare has an abundance of it........what she has lacked in the past is endurance........but the ultra sharp conditioner seems to have put some staying power into this gal with a prolonged series of 5F and 6F works.......believe she's meant and ready off of the bench this afternoon

5  Clearly Confused    six furlongs is not her best distance but there might be a strong pace in this race and if that occurs this late running mare likely will be finishing fast and with the meets top gun aboard

race 8    below average clarity

2  Test Ride   decent layoff win for this Pender four year old gelding......and his runner has multiple excuses in his lone turf race which like today was at 6 1/2F down the lasix that day and acted up at the gate and ran wide in the race......bred well for the grass.....big time dangerous and likely at a nice price

6  Synnin  well proven on the grass and might appreciate the 6 1/2 furlongs down the grassy this four year old has been making some strong sometimes quite early 2nd turn moves........right around the 6 1/2 furlong mark in those races

9  Pete's Slew   versatile GG sprinter has won on the lead and from far back on the AW......he showed life on the grass back in May in a route which really isn't his cup of tea........seems likely to fit much better in a grass sprint

7  Sunny Cat

4  Sudden Rumor

10  Celtic Moon
