Santa Anita for Friday 27 February 2015

I will be monitoring the Arcadia weather as there is rain in the forecast for both days this weekend although not that much rain. If I need to handicap the races for "off the turf" I will have to cut back on the comments because of limited time. Thanks for understanding.

Average card once again today.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Matzoh Ball Magic    1 for 1 at today's 7F distance........0 for 8 at other distances........and today we get a significant rider switch from the rider who was up for the win (who wins very few) to a jock who wins his fair share in Talamo

1  Casual Attire   obvious physical problems so Peter Miller wisely drops before it's too late........four year old gelding might be the one to beat if he holds together physically speaking for today's affair

5  Rusty Road   seems best with ample time between starts and the trainer shows patience and gives it...........cut back route to 7F is often a plus........shot to be a major player here

race 2    below average clarity

6  Toomanytomatoes   overcame an inside condition with a wide trip and still hit pay-dirt.......track has been rather kind to wide runners the last couple of weeks......step up of multiple levels of claiming says this mare is feeling goooood

4  Rosewhitenblue   last two races fit fine and like our top choice likely is doing well to step up 2 levels of claiming

7  Shopping Savannah   filly seems to be improving one baby step at a time........Art Sherman historically is quite dangerous turf to dirt which is the case here.......owns a touch of early speed in a race lacking much of the commodity

3  Lamazone

race 3    average clarity

8  Which Market   obvious sprint turf prep in last running in a protected non-claiming situation......drops into $50K claiming for today in a full throttle....... go go go

5  Te Rapa   away for 4 1/2 months but ran quite well on 21 June 14 off of (you guessed it) 4 1/2 months.......faces the softest  group he has seen in some time.........sure fits solidly if he returns as ready as he was last summer

9  Big Johnny D   like out top choice this GB invader's 1st out in the USA sure appears to be a sprint turf tune-up to drop (fully fit) and  go two turns on the grass where he was 2 for 4 in GB

7  Horizonallyspeakin

race 4    average clarity

3  Dixie Dame    race 2 back without blinkers sure fits and D'Amato wisely takes them off 1st start following the claim......two sharp reassuring works since the claim......seems tough in this spot

10  Coded Message   broke poorly and then showed she can run some after the compromised start in her maiden debut........small logical move forward in 2nd lifetime start combined with a better break from the metal monster and she has as good a shot as anyone in this affair

5  Monterey Legacy  full sister to a Lloyd Wicker runner who ran very well in debut a month or so ago (who I also liked).......also a sister to a Stakes winner of some say ready as well

2  Gold Locket

race 5   below average clarity

3  Joshie Hit a Homer   from a bug boy who has done little on the sod to a recent (no longer) bug boy who handles the grass quite well.....a very significant (grass) rider upgrade.......seems likely to get a good grounding saving stalk or mid pace position

1  Papa Z   nice move forward in 2nd lifetime start........and........finally draws inside following two nasty draws (outside) for a one mile SA grass affair.....should be motoring late

6  Royalist   good work tab for this Warren 1st timer who has put in copious furlongs and did so with tight intervals between works........ironically the 5 yr old 1ster is ridden by the bug boy I dished (Boulanger).......about his lack turf prowess in the comment for our top pick

7  Chaco

Long-shot consideration:   4  Heaveneleven   wide trip in last hides a decent 1st ever on the grass and a monster awakening.......switches bug boys from a 0-21 Boulanger to a 1 for 21 Santos.........such a deal........LOL

race 6    above average clarity

4  Cyrus Alexander   both lifetime races at today's 1 1/16th distance are solid especially in the way this expensive colt finished up in the late stages.........good rider/trainer team developing in Nakatani/Hollendorfer

3  Eckersley   strong grass win in second lifetime start.......that effort if duplicated on the dirt in start number three fits fine.........his pedigree for the dirt is decent and suggests one should ignore his so so effort in his MSW debut on the dirt at Lrc......not to mention he wasn't on Lasix .........and he was on Lasix in his 2nd lifetime start

2  Harmonic   deep closer likely will be sitting far back in the rear of the field and will come roaring home in the very late stages with little traffic to cope with in only a 6 horse field

race 7    average clarity

7  Awesome Return   seemingly an excellent spot for an off pace runner as quite a few in here want the front end.......very consistent sort on the sod and is capable of getting the 1o turf furlongs

8  Bailoutbobby   not as consistent as our top selection but the 1 1/4 is a good fit and he has the right running style for this race

4  Diamond Bachelor   ran a 46 to 1 shocker in last nearly winning a Grade 2......same distance and easier easy loose lead today.......still he seems somewhat capable of competing from off of the pace......we shall see

1  Joe's Blazing Aaron

race 8    average clarity

9  Rare Punch   poor trip but still a dull effort in last........very strong race 2 obscure trainer.....but.....not an obscure owner.....rebound city

8  Surfer Moon   needs to show the ability he displayed last Spring......maybe we will see it today as the meets top gun is up for the 1st time........and he just popped a sizzling 46:1 bullet drill (so fast that hopefully it doesn't knock him out some) for Conlon and company

2  Chappo   toss out last as he sure appeared to dislike the two turns........sprint two backs fits well......... and........I prefer today's rider up than the bug boy who rode that day

5  Oil

3  Win Wish

1  Arctic Code
