Santa Anita for Saturday 28 February 2015

I will be monitoring the Arcadia weather as there is rain in the forecast for both days this weekend although not that much rain. I need to handicap the races for "off the turf" so I will have to cut back on the comments (somewhat) because of limited time. Thanks for understanding.

Good card today especially so if the light (?) rain doesn't mess with the racing surfaces too much.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity   (if off the turf:  3 - 1 - 10 - 2 -9)

1  Rockin Robin   bred to appreciate the 9 furlong distance and it showed in his strong 9F grass race run two back.......9F today and he should be able to sit on or near the lead in a ground saving trip

3  Blue Line   helloooo turf.....nice wake up in 3rd lifetime start and 1st on the grass.......sharp work tab since.......fits well if he can run as well as his last running one furlong further this afternoon

2  Archie Bunker   sat way too far off of a lackluster pace and basically ran evenly.....did appear to take to the sod..........no support at the windows hints the effort was gimme........bred to appreciate the 1 1/8th distance........believe this colt moves forward 2nd out after the layoff today.....to what degree is the ? mark

10  Milton

race 2    average clarity

3  Shy Rosa   brutal trip in last.......new trainer today and better works.......and a rider upgrade......likes the distance

6  Lust for Life   Richard Baltas is solid 3rd out after layoffs........1 for 1 at the distance......has never missed the board sprinting at SA

7  Patriotic Brother    all three lifetime 6F races fit solidly......won this condition two races back

2  Pay the Debt

race 3    above average clarity

4  Nextdoorneighbor   Miller must have the trump card for this gelding - two big wins since he claimed......deservedly steps up again off of a powerful effort/time/fig for the level

1  Sacred Ovation   ran 2nd to our top choice in last.......quick (lead type only) might appreciate 1/2 less furlong to travel to hold off the cavalry charge

5  Oligarch   last four races on the dirt are somewhat competitive here......might need just a little more this afternoon and his recent a.m. preparation hints he might give it

race 4    average clarity   (if off the turf:  7 - 13AE - 2 - 11 - 8 -9)

8  Smoove It   top efforts are down the SA hill grass course and her very best was run the last time she ran on the hill which was 4 races back.......and......the effort is somewhat disguised by a poor trip.......and she sure caught some tough winners in all four of her lifetime races down the hill

7  Humoristica   R Mandella four year old filly won MSW debut and did it in a race down the SA hill........not an easy task......likely needs to move forward today to compete with our top pick.........she sure worked well enough since her debut to do just that

1  Brescat   not too shabby of a 2nd lifetime start considering this filly hadn't raced sine her debut in Chile 13 months ago........not at all out of this with a logical progression in form with that effort under her belt......an obvious good sign the Mr. Stevens sticks around

11  Anniversary Kitty

race 5   above average clarity

6  Masochistic   3 for 3 when sprinting without fronts on with the average margin of victory being 7 lengths.......and training as though he is ready (and then some) fresh off of the bench

1  Airfoil   consistent off pace race runner appears to get plenty of heat up front which obviously can flatter his late run

3  Reno Rebel   might sit in a dream position stalking a potential duel between the 5 and the 6........like his chances if that occurs

race 6    average clarity

1  Nob Hill   improving with every start and especially with the blinkers taken off for his last......should be motoring late......last fits........a ton if improves for the 4th time in a row

4  Wabel    speed sprinter adds blinkers for today for his 1st at a route........how's speed looking so far as this fellow seems loose on the lead and has the pedigree to stick around

2  The Man   blinkers off (and Bejarano up for the 1st time) this PA bred likely to get him to take back in his 1st lifetime route race.......not to mention that Baffert trains both speed types (2 and 4)......two solid lifetime sprints.....but.......distance is a ? mark with a so so pedigree for a route

9  Ideal

Long-shot consideration:   5  Honor Society   sprint - sprint - route (50 for his last 200 for the trainer) maneuver.......and...... blinkers on and the works sure are better.......very stout route breeding.....dangerous and likely at a double digit price

race 7    average clarity

4  Miss Mandate   last wasn't as bad as it looks but what we want is her effort two back which is hidden by running wide up near the pace on an inside biased day

8  Wild At Heart   solid sprints in both lifetime starts and sure is bred to handle one mile......seems like a big day for this expensive Mandella runner as the owners didn't shell out the big bucks to be a sprinter

2  All Star Bub   seems best at one mile at SA and sure is training markedly better of late.....and that is a dangerous thing with Bejarano up for Hollendorfer

7  Luminance

Long-shot consideration:   3  Midnight Miley   wide trip up near a fast pace hides a strong move forward (albeit on the turf) in her last......bred fine for dirt.....bad dirt debut 3 back which I believe was  a "gimme"

race 8    above average clarity

6  Light the City   powerful wide run in latest with 1st time Desormeaux in the saddle and 1st time at a route.........should be very stout here if she repeats the effort with a better trip

4  Achiever's Legacy   on the right end of the learning curve and today we get a rider upgrade........not out of this if her progression continues today

3  Enchanting Lady   tall order for a laid up three year old filly to run a route for the 1st time off of the extended break.....but Bob Baffert trained and he has her working like she might be up to the challenge

7  Rattataptap

race 9    average clarity

6  Warrensdollarsigns   two lifetime efforts/figs (last two races) are better than par and they both were run with the blinkers off and at SA and with Valdez up......same criteria for today.......and very few in here look capable of par

4  Sweet Sense   dropped and tossed a clinker as favorite off the long layoff last July off of some decent works.......drops again off the seven month hiatus and again working well.......might crush the field.......might toss another bomb........toss a coin

2  Profit Motive   not much in 2nd lifetime start.......debut fits and is hidden by a tough trip.......needs a rebound and a rebound with a better trip

3  Cindy's Secret

11  Prevaricator

13 AE  Dulcemia

10  Here Comes Bobbie
