Santa Anita for Friday 27 March 2015

Only 3 days left to save $5.00 when you purchase full card selections for the Kentucky Derby day. As in the past the selections will be sent in your email the night before at approximately 4 p.m Pacific time.

Different format for at least awhile as I want to give comments for every horse which means only the top two choices will have full comments and the rest of the runners will have abbreviated comments. After a full week like this I would appreciate any feedback you could give.

Thanks, your handicapper,

Rich Santucci

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Lust for Life   solid history sprinting on main track surfaces (6 2 2 1) fact it's hard to find a dirt sprint that doesn't fit well in this trainer in Richard Baltas who is in Dubai with Big Macher but his crew continues to win races back home

1  Moscato Girl   needs his race 3 back.....might get it as the Spawr/Delgadillo trainer/rider combo are starting to heat things up (as they have often in the past)........and.........they just got a near bullet 4F work out of this filly one week ago.......definitely the one to beat if she does fire the effort 3 back

6  Sweetest Secret   been racing over her head far too long.........fits here if drop in claiming is not too late

4  Runningwiththelute    dangerous drop down who is two for two at today's distance.....trainer sure could use a winner

race 2    below average clarity

1  Midnight Lien    14 to 1 in maiden debut hints the race was needed.........and the works support the notion as they are vastly improved following his lone lifetime race........should be in the hunt from the get go with a clean break

2  L X Sunrise   the ultimate hanger with eight 2nd's in ten lifetime races at SA........most likely by far to hit the board but winning might be a different matter......but then again this is one weak looking group of Mdn20K claimers

6  Sweet Taboo   switch to a 41% trainer......blinkers on......and the trainer is using one of his "go to" jocks

5  Prevaricator   positive rider change.......needs a small move forward 2nd out after the layoff

Long-shot consideration:   8 Warrior Thatcher   8 lengths of trip trouble in last and beaten by 12L.....improved drill since the hidden effort

race 3    average clarity

3  Prohibition Repeal    very solid effort/fig 1st time at a route (albeit a grass route) and he has shown he can handle dirt in two sprint races........four year old faces a bunch of three year old runners at a route in March.......should be tough here

1  Howdy   monster effort (that would likely win this race) two back.......fell way off in last (bounced) - not crazy about the over used slang word as you must have concluded by now as I seldom use seems to apply more than usual here

8  Book Thirty Four   significant wake-up in 2nd lifetime start (at 43 to 1) which was his 1st at a route........tough post but might move forward again

4  Air Nashoba   1st time gelding today and improved works.....a dangerous combo

race 4    average clarity

3  Sizzlin' Joe   2 for 4 at today's 1 1/8th turf distance........2 for 18 at other turf distances.........and his last at 1 1/8th on the grass run 3 back (where in ran out of the money) is a good effort/fig hidden by a bad trip....good post and rider......should be tough here

4  Dr. Action   big 12 to 1 (in a 6 horse field) wake up in last on the dirt and handles the grass just fine..........and I like the switch to Baze as he has scored with 4 of his last 1/2 dozen mounts for Miller......seems likely to sit close up in an affair that likely will yield a reasonable pace

7  Jomelo   good race 3 back (and at 1 1/8th on the sod) and like our top choice it is disguised by a bad trip.....Bekarano will be out to make amends

5  Tigah    hard to ignore this consistent grass cutter that just keeps chugging along

race 5    below average clarity

4  A. P. Pepper   consistently seems to put forth some effort.........good history running for 16K or less........back to a route race following 5 straight sprints...........and.........I have always though that two turn racing fits her more than a sprint racing

6  Winninginfashion    finally runs at a mile on the main track where she is 2 for 4 lifetime (and with a 2nd to boot)........0 for 13 on other surface and or distances (it's not rocket science) ........loves the lead and has a decent shot at getting it here especially with an aggressive rider out of the gate in Martin (the Energizer Bunny) Pedroza

1  Shy Rosa   sprint - sprint - route scenario.....and 2nd out after a claim.......makes this mare dangerous

2  Proud Vixen   keeps dropping and still not competing well at all.........drops or never

race 6    average clarity

7  Lucky J Lane   3 wins and 3 2nd's in 7 grass races and the only turf race where he managed to run out of the money her inferior barn mate got pounded at the windows and at it's best.....I wish S Cal would go back to entry know the 1 and 1A  format which helps keep the barn B.S. at bay

1  Awesome Return   consistent sort likely will be flying late and with Mike Smith at the controls who has a win and a 2nd in two mounts aboard this colt who has only missed hitting the board one time in 10 starts on the grass.....and it also seems significant that this is the only mount for Smith today

4  Jules Journey   very much at his best at today's 1 1/8th turf distance.....ran 3rd in a key 1 1/8th race 3 back

5  Abbey Vail    bet hard and won fresh off of a long layoff in March of 2014.......repeat in 2015?

race 7    average clarity

5  Go First    there is that lone speed advantage.......but.....there is also a lone late runner advantage as well.....only true closer in this field of seven.....away for 1 1/2 years but training as if he is returning to the race wars as good as new

4  Head South   record with blinkers on and conventional dirt is (5 2 3 0)........very strong effort 2 races back......and his recent a.m. prowess hints he is about to rebound to it

2  Brando the Birdman   moved forward in last and the effort is hidden by running against an outside bias and doing it up on the pace

6  Off The Deep End   fresh speed can be quite dangerous speed and that is the case here for this Miler charge who won his maiden debut with ease

race 8    average clarity

6  Currency Exchange   takes a logical small drop out of MSW racing into high-priced maiden claiming and his races sure seem to stand out here versus this soft looking bunch.......and.......a jock upgrade to the meets leading rider and leading by a significant margin

7  Stellar Act   laid up since August but returns as a 1st time gelding and drops back into high-priced maiden claiming where he ran a solid 2nd two races back in his maiden debut.......1st on the green carpet but bred to as if he is meant and ready for one tough team in the Desormeaux brothers

2  Vicious   another 1st time gelding.........1st on the lawn as well but like our top choice he is bred to handle it......likely will be close to the lead with a good turf speed jock up

9  Dothraki   long overdue all likelihood he still will need his very best

10  Go Trumpy Go   poor race in last but it was at a route.......needs a rebound to his sprint turf effort two back and maybe a little more

3  Big Hat Charlie    6 lbs off and a cut back in turf distance both look like trainer to boot
